Fৈ৅ৃ ৊া঻ Pষ৉৊৅ৈ’৉ D঻৉ু “The Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Her Angelic Sweetness (Kindness)”

Dear Friends, Believe it or not, we are ready to look at virtue number nine out of ten in series of virtues that St. Louis de Montfort uses to describe Mary’s Holiness. This week’s virtue is an interesting one. He says that Mary has angelic sweetness. You might say, what exactly does he mean by that?! For some help, let us look at how her “sweetness” appears in a couple of other parts of St. Louis de Montfort’s treatise True Devotion. Speaking about how devotion to her leads to union with her son, he says: “For this good Mother, filled with the grace and unction of the Holy Spirit, dips all the crosses she prepares for them in the honey of her maternal sweetness and the unction of pure love.” (n. 154) He continues say, “I believe that anyone who wishes to be devout and live piously in Jesus will suffer persecution and will have a daily cross to carry. But he will never manage to carry a heavy cross, or carry it joyfully and perseveringly, without a trusting devotion to our Lady, who is the very sweetness of the cross.” (n. 154) Something we can take away from these is that she makes desirable the things of God. She, from an overflow of her own love, obtains for us the grace to delight in that which comes from her Son. In other words, she bestows upon us acts of kindness – from His fullness, [through Mary] we have all received, grace upon grace. (Cf., Jn 1:16) In fact, another translation of the True Devotion, translates this ninth virtue as “angelic kindness.” “Kindness,” according to St. Thomas, “acts as ‘a good fire,’ so that just as fire by melting metal makes it flow, so charity inclines a person not to keep the good things he has, but makes them flow to others.” (Commentary on 1 Cor 13) To help us dig a little deeper, lets appeal to a work written by Father Frederick W. Faber titled “Kindness”. He makes a point to highlight that kindness is a power that pertains to our conduct towards one another. This power, called kindness, helps lead to happiness. “The worst kinds of unhappiness, as well as the greatest amount of it, come from our conduct to each other.” By the order of the book and the progression of the chapters, Father Faber simply seems to say that kind thoughts, lead to kind words, which lead to kind actions. Kind thoughts. According to Fr. Faber, the habit of not judging others is one which is very difficult to acquire, and which is generally not acquired till late on in the spiritual life. He suggests that we should carefully persevere in the habit of kind interpretation of others. He says that “appearances are often against what we afterwards discover to have been deeds of virtue. A man is always capable himself of a sin which he thinks another is capable of, or which he himself is capable of imputing to another. Even a well-founded suspicion more or less degrades a man. His suspicion may be verified, and he may escape some material harm by having cherished the suspicion. But he is unavoidably the worse man in consequence of having entertained it.” On the other hand, “virtue grows in us under the influence of kindly judgments, as if they were its nutriment.” Kind words. “These,” Faber says, “are the music of the world.” Many a friendship, long, loyal and self-sacrificing, rested at first on no thicker a foundation than a kind word. Why are we ever anything else but kind in our words? Interestingly he says that the well-formed person is more likely to be kind in thought, because the mind can look at things from different points of view, but they are more inclined to lack kindness in speech. He says, “it is harder for a clever man to be kind, especially in his words. He has a temptation, and it is one of those temptations which appear sometimes to border on the irresistible, to say clever things; and, somehow, clever things are hardly ever kind things.” Kind actions. “In this regard, let us think of heaven. Let us think that there are multitudes in heaven today who are there because of kind actions; many are there for doing them, many for having had them done to them. Every act of kindness has doubtless done us a certain amount of spiritual good. If they did not make us better at the time, they prepared the way for our becoming better, or they sowed a seed of future goodness, and made an impression which we never suspected, and yet which was ineffaceable.” “Kindness is the tur of the spiritual world, whereon the sheep of Christ feed quietly beneath the Shepherd’s eye.” Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 W঻ূহ৅ৃ঻ ৊৅ Oোৈ Lষ঺৏ ৅় P঻ষহ঻! We invite you to join our parish family!
