Bowling Green State University is an integral part of the system of

higher education maintained by the State of Ohio. It is governed by a Board

of Trustees appointed by the Governor, and is supported almost entirely by

legislative appropriations.

A 1910 General Assembly Act authorized an appointed commission to seek a site in Northwestern Ohio for a new normal school. Bowling Green was selected and trustees were appointed in 1911 with the first president elected in 1912.

The college known as Bowling Green Normal College opened in temporary quarters in September 191^, and one year later moved into two new buildings on the present campus.

In 1929 the General Assembly changed the name to Bowling Green State

College. The present name was authorized by the 1935 assemb3.y.

The University is composed of four main divisions: College of Education,

College of Liberal Arts, College of Business Administration, and the Graduate

School. Courses are offered in forty-four different departments, and the school is recognized by all accrediting agencies.

The university is located on a tract of 240 acres in northeastern part of Bowling Green. Over fifty campus buildings are available this year. Two new dormitories, a student union and a classroom building, costing a total

6-million, will be started this year.

The city of Bowling Green, with a population of 9,108, is located 25 miles south of Toledo at the intersection of U.S. Routes 25 and 6. A branch of the

Baltimore and Ohio railroad and Greyhound bus lines serve the city.

The university is co-educational with a 195)+ spring enrollment of 3,120.

The breakdown shows 1,652 men and l,k6B women. The anticipated enrollment for 195^-55 is 3,^00. TEE 195 U SCHEDULE

WON 1 LOST 8 THE HEAD COACH

As he starts his 26th year in the gridiron business, Robert H. (Bob) Whittaker can look back on a most enviable record as a scholastic and college coach.

For 2k years of this period Bob has been a head coach. Only in his first year at Sandusky, Ohio, high school did he serve as an assistant. The overall record shows the keen strategist has 151 victories, nine ties and only 63 set- backs for an outstanding .697 percentage. Not many coaches can point to such a fine record.

In 13 years at the BG helm Bob has watched his Falcon elevens take 6k wins and seven ties in 105 games for a .592 average.

During this time the Falcons have enjoyed several outstanding seasons. In

1952, BG's first in Mid-American competition, the Falcons ran up a 7-2 record, losing only to Miami and Ohio U., in the MAC. The 257 points were the most scored by a Falcon eleven.

The 19^9 and 1950 seasons were rebuilding years after the undefeated 19U8 season. That year the Falcons swept by eight straight foes before deadlocking

John Carroll, 13-all, in the season's finale. Several small bowl bids were re- jected by the team and staff after consideration.

During the World War II period Bob kept football alive at BG, when many schools gave up the sport. Often he pieced together teams composed of Navy V-12 men and a few civilians, but always managed a winning season.

Whittaker began his college coaching career on a high note when he came to

BG in I9I4-I. After the progressive Sandusky superintendent of schools Dr. Frank

J. Prout moved to Bowling Green as president, he induced Whittaker to leave the fine Sandusky set-up and take over the Falcons.

After a tie by Wooster and a 8-0 loss to Akron, the Falcons recorded seven straight victories and Whittaker was nominated as Ohio's candidate for the "Coach of the Year" award.

His 11-year Sandusky record is even more outstanding. From 1932 to 1936 the

Streaks won 38 consecutive games. This was five more victories than recorded at k Massillon by . His 1931-33-3^-35-38 teams were undefeated. He developed such Ohio State stars as Charles Maag, Edward Bruckner and Leonard Thom. As he left Sandusky for BG, his record showed &'( victories, two ties, and only 20 defeats.

Born in Greenville, Ohio, Bob attended high school at Lorain and Norwalk, taking part in four years of football. At he played halfback where his teammates included Paul Brown and "Weeb" Ewbank, both now head coaches in National Professional League. Bob also took part in track at the Oxford school, running the dashes and throwing the javelin to a college record.

He was graduated from Miami with a degree of bachelor of science in educa- tion. Bob took graduate work at Ohio State but received his MA from Bowling

Green in 19^2.

Bob spends most of his vacation at his summer home on Put-In-Bay Island in

Lake Erie where he teaches sailing and does all the carpentry work on his home.

Besides sailing, Bob likes handball and ice skating and other winter sports for diversion. He is an assistant professor in health and physical education and rated by students as a fine teacher in health education courses.

After suffering his poorest season in 25 years of coaching last year, Bob

Whittaker will still be rebuilding his Falcon machine this season.

The veteran mentor will have 13 of last year's 22 lettermen back, along with 13

of 20 numeral winners coming up from the freshman team.

The biggest loss among those not returning will be little all-America end Jim

Ladd, now a member of the Chicago Bears professional team. The loss of veteran center

Bill Robinson because of ineligibility at the end of summer school also was a blow.

Depth again, as always, will be Whittaker's biggest problem, with injuries to key regulars a big factor in the success of the season. We might add the progress of

sophomores an equally large factor.

The running offense, which netted only 662 yards last fall, should improve. Be-

sides quarterback Bill Bradshaw, who picked up 236 of the total last year, the back-

field candidates include veterans Glen Freimark and John Ladd, second and fourth in the ground gaining departments in 1953• That puts three-fourths of the backfield in

lettermen's hands. The fullback job will find a real fight between sophomore Jack

Giroux, outstanding freshman in spring drills, and Ben Rowe, a converted guard who

shows a lot of power running. Reserve strength is slim at halfback with sophomores

Larry Kent and John Galyas most likely to work into the lineup as spot players. Sam

Epstein, a reserve last fall, could help the situation if a knee operation holds up.

Bradshaw, the top ranking quarterback in Mid-American Conference with his 2h

completions, and the nation's 31st ranking passer, will keep the passing game in fine shape. Jim Bryan will lend able backing. On the receiving end big Jim Ladd will be missed but Martin Keipp and Jack Hecker will be key targets with Chuck Kisselle coming forth as the season progresses.

Up front the center job is a big question. Sophomore Harold Peek looks like the best bet, but Hal Bruck, who has won two letters at various positions, could move into the picture with experience.

Three lettermen have inside on guard spots. They are Keith Fowler, Otto Beindorf,

10 a tackle last year, and Joe Stanziale. This delegation will get some help from sophomore Jim Wilson but other manpower is slim.

The BG tackles will he biggest in history. Junior Fred Koch is the only letter- man so sophomores will have to play their part. The boy that Whittaker hopes will fill one hole is 275-pound Kenny Russell. Two other first year huskies, Bill Havens and Dan Hurst, might be contenders with experience. Jim Longe and Bill Hall are on hand from last year's reserves.

Hecker and Keipp are top end candidates with Kisselle alternating with them.

The depth here is very limited with sophomore Joe DeLuca and junior Al Rowe the best bets. Some others could be changed to fortify this position.

The line will average about 205 pounds with their defensive ability certainly a questionable factor. Linebackers might be a weak spot.

The running attack will be improved and the aerial attack, 25th in the nation last season, probably won't be as prominent as in '53* Bradshaw will keep the punt- ing atop the nation, where he finished last season with a !+'+-yard average.

Team speed is improved over last year and the downfield blocking should help the running offense click.

THE STYLE OF PLAY

System: Mixture of Bob Whittaker*s T-formation and short punt with a sprinkling of split-T.

Ground Game: The running attack, featuring quick opening line plays, off tackle smashes and end sweeps, will be led by quarterback Bill Bradshaw, halfbacks Jack Giroux and Ben Rowe. Speedster Larry Kent will be called for the end sweeps.

Aerial Attack: Bill Bradshaw, the nation's 31st small college passer, and top passer in Mid-American, will be the chief tosser. Jack Hecker will be his top receiver with Marty Keipp and Chuck Kisselle not far behind.

Kicking Game: Bradshaw, the best in in 1953 (includes both major and minor teams), will do most of the punting. In two years the veteran quarterback has kicked 98 of 99 times for 1+1.6 average. Jim Bryan is next in line.

Kickoffs and Point After:An array of specialists are available here. Jim Bryan, with his dropkick (8 out of 9 in '53) will get some placement work as well as Hecker.

30 PRESS, RADIO AND BROADCASTERS INFORMATION

The press box in the Bowling Green stadium, although not elaborate or

any too large, usually can adequately handle all working press, radio

broadcasters and authorized scouts.

Because the space is limited, only press and radio men actually work-

ing the games are requested to make application for space. Other press

and radio representatives desiring to see any or all of the Falcon games

will be furnished complimentary tickets upon request. No women will be

allowed in the press box during contests.

Applications for press and radio reservations should be made as early

as possible. Early reservations will help you and us. Those desiring

wire service should specify same in reserving space and also notify the

Western Union at your terminal. This makes a double check on the installa-

tion of this service. Reservations can be made by writing, wiring or

telephoning Don Cunningham, Director of Athletic Publicity, Bowling Green

State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. Office phone is 5661.

Photographers desiring field passes should contact Mr. Cunningham

in the same manner as the press. Dark room facilities will be available for

those desiring same.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics hopes that all visiting

newsmen and radio broadcasters will feel at home when covering our contests.

. We are ready to give you the best possible service while you are here,

and should you have suggestions as to how we can improve this service, we

will welcome the opportunity for you to pass these thoughts on to us.
