  • ACE's Scandinavian Sojourn
ACE’s Scandinavian Sojourn : A Southerner’s Perspective Story by: Richard Bostic, assisted by Ronny Cook When I went on the ACEspana trip back in 2009, it was by far one of the most amazing vacations I have ever experienced. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums.

  • A Show of Emotion
Issue No. 3/2018 A Show of Emotion Interview by Gill Crabbe, FNG Research As the Sinebrychoff Art Museum prepares to stage an exhibition on painting and the theatre, Gill Crabbe meets the show’s curator Laura Gutman, to discuss the research she carried out in order to bring this topic to life Meeting the independent curator Laura Gutman is like meeting a detective. As curator of several shows in Finland, where she moved from Paris 17 years ago, including the recent acclaimed ‘Air de Paris’ exhibition at Helsinki Art Museum (HAM), she has used her research skills and background studying art history under Guy Cogeval at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris in the 1990s to impressive effect in Finland. Not only has she been making intriguing connections between Finnish artists and their European counterparts, but also deepening understanding of European artworks in Finnish collections. It is a busy year for Gutman as she is now in the final stages of preparing a show on theatre and painting from the 17th to early 20th centuries titled ‘Moved to Tears: Staging Emotions’ at the Sinebrychoff Art Museum in Helsinki. The museum is an appropriate setting for such a subject as it is the house of the collector Paul Sinebrychoff, whose wife Fanny Grahn was herself an actress, and their rooms on the first floor are laid out almost as a series of theatrical sets, each reflecting a period from his collection. The theme of the Sinebrychoff exhibition which is held in the galleries on the ground floor, is also a subject close to Gutman’s heart, since at the Ecole du Louvre she studied the theoretical and philosophical background to painting and theatre ‘from David to Degas’.

  • KRUUNUSILLAT International Design Competition a Brief Outline of the Competition 20.2.2013 Kruunusillat
KRUUNUSILLAT INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION A BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE COMPETITION 20.2.2013 KRUUNUSILLAT • Kruunusillat is a traffic connection currently being designed for linking maritime Kruunuhaka and the future island district of Kruunuvuorenranta. • The competition area is situated between Kalasatama and Kruunuvuorenranta. • Kruunusillat is meant for trams, cyclists and pedestrians. • The bridge connection would significantly shorten the distance between Helsinki city centre and Kruunuvuorenranta. • The competition will be held to ascertain what kinds of options exist. • As a result of the competition, information will be obtained for assessing the traffic connection’s environmental impact. • The competition is international because we want the world’s top experts for this challenging task. • The connection will be situated in the middle of a national landscape. The bridge connection must be of high aesthetic quality and should be appropriate for the landscape and natural environment. • The design has to be safe in all weather conditions and it must enable a free, unobstructed flow of traffic. The City of Helsinki wants to favour sustainable forms of traffic, such as rail transport, and improve the standard of service of public transport. The bridge connection proposal meets this requirement. The bridge connection would also enhance provisions for pedestrian traffic and cycling. 2 KRUUNUSILLAT International design competition The City of Helsinki will hold an international design competition for Kruunusillat. The aim is to attract the world’s best bridge experts here to design the new tram, cycle and pedestrian connection between centrally located Kalasatama and Laajasalo’s Kruunuvuorenranta. The bridge connection would be made up of at least two bridges, the longest of which could be, at nearly 1.2 kilometres, the longest in Finland.

Ensisijaisena tavoitteena on analysoida paikannimien roolia fiktiivisen Helsinki-kuvan rakentamisessa. Lisäksi pyritään muodostamaan kokonaisvaltainen käsitys siitä, millaisia paikannimiä romaaneissa esiintyy. Tutkimuksen aineistona on Kuka murhasi rouva Skrofin? (1939) ja Komisario Palmun erehdys (1940) -romaanien paikannimet. Tutkimusaineistossa on yhteensä 58 paikannimeä. Näistä 39 nimeä viittaa Helsingissä sijaitseviin paikkoihin. 12 nimistä on ulkomailla sijaitsevien paikkojen nimiä ja seitsemän taas viittaa muualla Suomessa sijaitseviin paikkoihin. Nimistä 52 on autenttisia paikannimiä ja kuusi fiktiivisiä. Suurin osa nimistä viittaa alueisiin (25 nimeä), kulkuväyliin ja rakennelmiin
