University of Colorado Colorado Springs COMMENCEMENT DECEMBER 20, 2019 FROM THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY TO THE CLASS OF 2019 Dear Graduate: One of the greatest honors for the University of Colorado Board of Regents, the institution’s governing board, is to be part of this commencement ceremony. Your success is a success for us all. Your degree is a measure not only of an accomplishment of dedication and talent, but also notice to the world that you have the skill and discipline to contribute greatly to any endeavor you pursue. This commencement ceremony, like every University of Colorado graduation since 1935, will close with the reading of the Norlin Charge. As originally expressed by former CU President George Norlin in 1935, graduation "marks your initiation in the fullest sense of the fellowship of the University, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, and as promoters of her spirit." Welcome to the ranks of CU’s alumni family, which is over 475,000 strong. Congratulations on achieving this milestone. Well done and well earned! December 20, 2019 ◆ Commencement 1 FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY TO THE CLASS OF 2019 December 20, 2019 Dear Graduates, Congratulations on achieving a significant milestone in your life and welcome to the family of University of Colorado alumni . There are nearly a half million alumni making a difference in lives and communities around the world . We are proud of what you have accomplished, and we join you in thanking the family and friends who helped you get to today . Wherever your life’s journey takes you, I hope you will continue your relationship with the University of Colorado . One of our goals has been to teach you how to learn, along with what you have learned . In a world where technology is accelerating the pace of careers and lives, the ability to be a lifelong learner will be critical . The university is happy to be your partner in that endeavor . I would also encourage you to remember your alma mater and consider donating when you are able . We don’t expect recent graduates to be large benefactors, but even small contributions make a difference to students working toward where you are today . I have found that philanthropy is a wonderful habit to form . I have contributed every year to the universities where I earned degrees, modestly at first and more robustly in recent years . I believe in helping provide others with the opportunities that have served me so well in life . The value of your University of Colorado degree will continue to appreciate throughout your life . The stronger the university’s brand and reputation, the more valuable your degree becomes . As an ambassador for the university, you play a significant role in that effort . I wish you all the best in this next phase of your life, whether you are starting a career, a cause or a family . I trust your University of Colorado degree will serve you well no matter the path you take . I leave you with the words of former President Theodore Roosevelt, who said “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing ”. You are now part of a group of alumni that prides itself on work worth doing and excels at it . Congratulations! All the best, Mark Kennedy, President 2 University of Colorado Colorado Springs FROM THE CHANCELLOR OF UCCS TO THE CLASS OF 2019 December 20, 2019 Dear Graduates, Welcome to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs commencement . We are pleased that family and friends who played an important role in your journey have joined us in celebration . Their physical presence today is as meaningful as has been their emotional and financial support to get to this milestone achievement . Commencement ceremonies are steeped in tradition . As part of an exuberant procession of graduates marching into The BROADMOOR World Arena, you pass through a line of faculty and staff dressed in brightly colored regalia, receive degrees officially conferred by the University of Colorado Board of Regents, and seal completion with a handshake from the president or chancellor and provost or college dean . As a campus community, we salute the accomplishments of your past, present and future . We expect the members of the class of 2019 to achieve great things personally and professionally and to make their mark on the world . We are confident UCCS has prepared you for the challenges inherent in a complex and fast-changing world . I would like to take this opportunity to welcome President Mark Kennedy, who was appointed to lead the University of Colorado in July of 2019, to his first UCCS Commencement . His presence along with the members of the University of Colorado Board of Regents, faculty, staff and alumni shows the pride of the university in you -- its graduates .
