1977 MEDIA GUIDE - Published by Morehead State University. Information compiled and edited by Fred Hensley and Randy Stacy. Photography by George Burgess and Gera ld Moore. Former MSU basketball and standout Steve Hamilton is entering his second season at the helm of the Eagle baseball program, after guiding the Eagles to a school record of 28 wins in his initial campaign. Hamilton earned All-American honors in basketball at MSU in 1957. He twice was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference team. He distinguished his basketbal I career by setting al I of MSU's rebounding marks. He currently holds the marks for rebounds in a game (38), rebounds in a season (543), rebounds in a four-year career (1,675), best rebounding average in a season (20. 1) and best rebounding average in a career (16.4). He also is the No. 3 all-time scorer at MSU with 1,829 points. But the slender native of Charlestown, Indiana, w i II probably be remembered most for his professional baseball days. Hamilton spent 11 seasons in the majors and played for the , Washi ngton Senators, , , and . He stayed with the Yankees for seven and one-half seasons and played in two World Series. He retired from the major leagues following the 1972 season and managed the Johnson City (Tenn.) franchise in the Appalachian League in 1973. Hamilton returned to the majors as pitching coach of the in 1975 under his long-time friend and former manager, Ralph Houk, but returned to MSU last year. " In ba seba l I, I left home for seven months out of the year and could see my family for only a day at a time," said Hamilton. "I decided I wanted to stay closer to home." Hamilton was appointed the Eagle field boss when John (Sonny)Allen was elevated to assistant athletic director. Allen served as head coach for 14 seasons. Hamilton views his appointment as a challenge and responsibility. "It is a great opportunity to be able to take over a program like this one," he said. "It will take a great deal of hard work to maintain MSU's tradition in baseball." Hamilton received his bachelor's degree from MSU in 1958 and his master's degree in 1963.

Steve Hamilton, Ken Nooe

Graduate Assistant Former MSU "Most Valuable Player" Ken Nooe will remain with the team as a graduate assistant coach this season. The Cincinnati native holds five school and two conference records. Nooe currently holds the MSU seasonal marks for most at bats (164), most runs scored (48), most hits (67), most doubles (12), and most total bases (99). His runs scored and total base marks are OVC records. Nooe had a career batting average of .364 and played in two OVC championship series. "Kenny worked hard for us as a player and I know he'll work just as hard as a coach," said Hamilton. " He is very enthusiastic and that makes him good for a ball club." The former second baseman will occupy the first base coaching box. His wife, Rhonda, serves as secretary to MSU Basketbal I Coach Jack Schalow. 1977 OUTLOOK

With most of his 1976 squad returning and a host of fine recruits, Morehead State University Baseball Coach Steve Hamilton eyes the 1977 season with enthusiasm. "We have a great deal of potential," said Hamilton. "We have experience, depth and some excellent recruits." Gone from last year's Ohio Valley Conference runner-up is OVC "Player of the Year," Tinker Chapman. Also absent are Jim Duff and Harry Arnold, outfielders Mac Whitaker and Greg Tucker and second baseman Ken Nooe. Nooe returns as a graduate assistant coach. The nucleus of the team returns, however, including seven regulars and three starting pitchers from the 1976 team that finished 28-11. By position, prospects for 1977 are: FIRST BASE-Veteran Bobby Wells returns for his senior season and will divide his time between first base and the outfield. Danny Kiser, who three home runs and batted .296 in 19 games last year, also is back. Both are left-handed hitters. SECOND BASE-"Jeff Stamper may very well be the most valuable player on the team." That was Coach Hamilton's comment last year when he took over the reins of the team from Sonny Allen. Stamper responded by hitting .345. The Frankfort native had an OVC record hitting streak snapped at 20 games in the season's final contest. Stamper has played six different positions since coming to MSU and wi II open this season at second base. Dale Horner wi II provide depth at this and several other positions. ~ - £/'lrt~.,..._,, _-~ - - I - • SH O RTSTO P- J i m Brock man has played shortstop the last three seasons for MSU and has been named to the AII-OVC team each time. He hit .294 and swiped 18 bases last season despite sitting out several games with an injured hand. THIRD BASE-Freshmen Roy Wright and John McVaney will battle for this position. McVaney has an excellent arm and hits with power, while Wright is consistent both in the field and at bat. OUTFI ELD-AII-OVC Harry Hall is back after hitting .297 and stealing 24 bases in as many attempts last year. He will anchor the outfield corps and will find a freshman on each side of him. David Means will start in left field and Jody Hamilton in right field. Both had excellent fall seasons and are expected to make MSU's outfield tops in the conference. Veteran Dave Bennett and newcomer Tom Jones will add depth in the outfield and serve as the left-handed designated hitters. CATCHER-Kirk Hudson returns as one of the top defensive catchers in the OVC, but must improve his hitting. Rick Gunterman, the premier designated hitter in the conference, returns to make the catcher's position one of the strongest on the team. Dan Clements will see spot action. -Two starters return from last season. Lefthander Mel Wolf started slow but finished 3-2. Righthander Marc Griesinger was the surprise of the staff, winning all five of his decisions and fashioning a 2.45 ERA. Heading the list of newcomers is Ken Wilfong, a righthander from Newport who pitched his team to the runner-up spot in the Kentucky State Tournament. Lefthander Ed Olwine had impressive high school statistics in Greenville, Ohio. Walt Terrell of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Bart Carruth of Fredonia, N. Y., are also expected to challenge for starting roles. Veterans Jerry Bloomfield and Doug Fryman and freshmen Tom De Luca and David Logsdon head the bullpen staff. Last year's team set a record for wins in a season but the 1977 club may be hard pressed to match it in view of a strong schedule. NCAA Division I runner-up Eastern Michigan will visit Allen Field. Also scheduled are Western Michigan and Ohio University. Traditional opponents Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Marshall also dot the slate. "We play a tough schedule," said Hamilton. "However, our goal is to repeat as Eastern Division Champions and get another shot at the OVC championship and the NCAA tournament." Miss Peaches Ellis, now Mrs. Jack Cecil of Morehead, submitted "Bald Eagles" as a name suggest ion and won the $10 first prize. "Bald Eagles" was used for a few years but it eventually gave way to just " Eagles" for the sake of convenience. A beautiful painting of the Morehead State University Bald Eagle was commis sioned in 1970 and more than $30,000 worth of prints have been sold to finance scholarships. A popular attraction at home football and basketbal I games is the "MSU Fighting Eagle," a man-sized m ascot resplendent in a colorful and detailed costume.
