MRKVICKA Zusammenfassung: Die systematische Stellung der Gattung Epipactis in der Subtribus Cephalantherinae wie auch die Stel- lung dieser Subtribus innerhalb der Unterfamilie Neottioideae wird an Beispielen enhvickungsgeschicht- licher Untersuchungen diskutiert. Nach den neuesten molekularen Daten, die aus DNA-Sequenzanalysen gewonnen wurden, ist ein Stammbaum erstellt worden, in dem die Neottioideae in die "epidendroids" eingereiht wurden. Das steht im Widerspruch zu dem in unserer Arbeit praktizierten Klassifikations- System, das in "Die Orcliideen" R. SCHLECHTER in der Bearbeitung von F. BMEGER und K. SENGHAS venvendet wird. Die Ableitung einer Orchideenblüte aus dem Liliiflorae-Erbe ermögliclit eine Differentialdiagnose zwi- schen den Orchidaceae und den Apostasiaceae. Die Apostasiaceae, die viele Autoren als Unterfamilie Apostasioideae zu den Orchidaceae stellen, werden durch vergleichende Blütenanalysen von dieser Familie abgetrennt. Der Entwickiungstendenz des Gynoeceums der Orchideen, durch die es zum Auf- bau eines Rostellums mit seinen Organen kommt, steht die Reduktionstendenz des Gynoeceums der Apostasiaceae, durch die es zu einer Verminderung des ursprünglich trimeren Stigmas kommt, gegen- über. This page intentionally left blank Essential Orchids Orchids are one of the oldest and largest families in the plant kingdom with over 25,000 species worldwide. Through the millions of years of their existence, they developed complex relationships with their pollinators, animal communities, and environment in general. Today, orchids are now among the most widely grown and popular flowering potted plants in the world. With modern scientific cultivation, there are over 100,000 varieties of orchids and the number is increasing. However, in the wild populations are declining; many orchids are on the endangered lists, and almost all collecting of orchids is banned. What Makes an Orchid an Orchid? All orchids share three basic characteristics: ● Three sepals ● Three petals. In most orchids, one of these is highly modified and called a lip, or labellum. These are easy to see in most of the common orchids, and act as a landing pad for insect pollinators. ● A column. In most flowers the male (stamen) and female (pistil) reproductive structures are separate. -

La familia Orchidaceae es uno de los grupos de Magnoliophyta de mayor distribución a nivel mundial, ocupan una amplia gama de nichos, desde el medio terrestre hasta las copas de los árboles (epífitas). Históricamente esta familia ha recibido mucha atención dada la belleza de las flores de algunos de sus miembros, lo que ha llevado con el tiempo a buscar el conocimiento, entre otras cosas, sobre su distribución; por lo que han aparecido listas de especies para varios lugares de América y el mundo. En Venezuela, exceptuando los tratamientos que a nivel general se ha dado a la familia, son escasos los estudios a nivel local y en particular en la cordillera de la costa; razón por la que en este trabajo se presenta una lista actualizada de las especies de Orchidaceae conocidas hasta el presente en la flora del estado Sucre. -

Wita Stwosza 59, 80-308 Gdańsk, Poland. [email protected] Abstract. The floristic, geographical and ecological analysis of the orchid flora of the department of Valle del Cauca are presented. The study area is located in the southwestern Colombia and it covers about 22 140 km2 of land across 4 physiographic units. All analysis are based on the fieldwork and on the revision of the herbarium material. A list of 572 orchid species occurring in the department of Valle del Cauca is presented. Two species, Arundina graminifolia and Vanilla planifolia, are non-native elements of the studied orchid flora. The greatest species diversity is observed in the montane regions of the study area, especially in wet montane forest. -

Calypsoeae represent a small tribe of anatomically little-known orchids with a wide distribution in the Western Hemisphere. Leaves are present in all genera, except Corallorhiza and Wullschlaegelia both of which are subterranean taxa. Stomata are abaxial (ad- and abaxial in Aplectrum) and tetracytic (anomocytic in Calypso). Fiber bundles are absent in leaves of all taxa examined except Govenia tingens. Stegmata are present in leaves of only Cremastra and Govenia. Roots are velamentous, except in filiform roots of Wullschlaegelia. Vegetative anatomy supports a relationship between Wullschlaegelia and Corallorhiza but does not support the grouping of winter-leaved Aplectrum and Tipularia nor proposed groupings of genera based on pollinarium features. -

Renner National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Garden and Domain Trust, Mrs Macquaries Road, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia Abstract Danhatchia novaehollandiae D.L.Jones & M.A.Clem. and D. australis (Hatch) Garay & Christenson were separated at species rank due to differences in petal length and flower opening, with the Australian species having smaller, tardily opening flowers. From this, flower lengths for Australia and New Zealand are expected to be bi-modally distributed with peaks at c. 3 mm and c. 5 mm respectively. Flowers on all available herbarium specimens in AK, CANB, and NSW were measured, and flower length was found to be unimodal, with nearly identical ranges in Australian and New Zealand plants. Flower size variation in Australian and New Zealand Danhatchia specimens has two significant contributing components, inter-individual variation, and ontogenetic variation where flowers increase in size as they age. Dimensions previously recorded for the two species reflect upper and lower limits on the range of variation in flower size present in both New Zealand and Australia, respectively. Within herbarium material, 20% of flowers on New Zealand specimens, and 40% of flowers on Australian specimens exhibited signs of opening. There was no correlation between flower size and opening, as might be expected if the two species were both present in Australia and/or New Zealand. -
