(Philadelphia, June 1, 2015)—From its homes in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and New York, The Philadelphia Orchestra will spend the coming months bringing its unique and renowned sound to music lovers across the U.S. Following their 2015 Tour of Europe, the Fabulous Philadelphians return stateside for concerts at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park (June 23, 25, 26, and July 23, 24, 25), the Bravo! Vail festival in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains (July 10-18), and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Upstate New York (August 5-22). For a complete concert calendar, please see page 4.

Mann Center for the Performing Arts—Philadelphia—June 23, 25, 26, and July 23, 24, 25 The Mann Center for the Performing Arts is the Philadelphia region’s premier outdoor cultural arts center, offering a diverse season of world-class entertainment. The Philadelphia Orchestra’s summer season opens at the Mann on June 23 with a celebration of Tchaikovsky, featuring Conductor-in-Residence Cristian Măcelaru and Principal Cello Hai-Ye Ni. On June 25 the Academy Award-winning Best Picture film The Godfather comes to life on the big screen with the Orchestra performing Nino Rota’s iconic and haunting score, led by Maestro Justin Freer. On June 26 Măcelaru leads an evening dedicated to George Gershwin, featuring Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, and excerpts from Porgy and Bess and Girl Crazy. Soprano Taylor Johnson, baritone Normal Garrett, and pianist Terrence Wilson join the Orchestra for these musical masterworks.
The Orchestra returns to the Mann Center on July 23 for a live performance of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first film of the beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Orchestra performs the epic score composed and orchestrated by Academy Award-winner Howard Shore, under the baton of Ludwig Wicki. The Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Boys Choir lend their voices for the evening.
On July 24 Diana Krall returns to the Mann Center with The Philadelphia Orchestra, performing orchestral standards and pop classics. Finally, on July 25 Conductor-in-Residence Cristian Măcelaru returns for an All- Beethoven evening, featuring his Leonore Overture No. 3, Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by Janice Carissa, and his Fifth Symphony.

Bravo! Vail—Vail, Colorado—July 10 to 18 The Philadelphia Orchestra heads west to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado for a ninth season of concerts at the Bravo! Vail music festival. Conductor-in-Residence Cristian Măcelaru conducts the first concert on July 10 with special guest Garrick Ohlsson performing Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto. Also on the program is Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony. The following evening, Măcelaru leads the high-definition, multi-media Pixar in Concert, featuring montages of movie clips, including Cars, Ratatouille, A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo, and more—all accompanied live by The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Robert Spano joins the Orchestra on July 12 for Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”). Also on the program: Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, and Curtis Institute of Music graduate Benjamin Beilman performing Jennifer Higdon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Violin Concerto.
The Bravo! Vail residency concludes with three concerts led by Principal Guest Conductor Stéphane Denève on July 15, 17, and 18. The July 15 concert features the works of legendary film composer John Williams, featuring excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a suite from Star Wars, and “Adventures in Earth,” from E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial. Perhaps not as well known—but just as rich and lyrical—are his orchestral pieces, like his Violin Concerto, performed by virtuoso James Ehnes, and Sound the Bells!, written for a series of concerts during a 1993 tour of Japan with the Boston Pops. On July 17 the Orchestra presents a collection of music inspired by the Bard, from Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet to the Wedding March from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Throughout the evening, Shakespearean stage actors present scenes from the plays that prompted the music. The final concert on July 18 celebrates the famed Philadelphia Sound, including works that former Music Director Leopold Stokowski arranged for the Orchestra: Musorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain and Pictures at an Exhibition. Augustin Hadelich returns to Bravo! Vail to perform Sibelius’ virtuosic Violin Concerto, a piece that is arguably one of the most difficult in the repertoire.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center—Saratoga Springs, NY—August 5 to 23 The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 50th season of performing at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) kicks off with three concerts led by Principal Guest Conductor Stéphane Denève, featuring the incomparable artistry of three-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters (August 5), Jean-Yves Thibaudet (August 6), and Yo-Yo Ma(August 7). Conductor-in-Residence Cristian Măcelaru then leads Pixar in Concert (August 8) and an All- Beethoven evening (August 12), with Emanuel Ax performing the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
On August 13 Steven Reineke leads the Orchestra and Broadway star Megan Hilty in an evening of hits from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Wicked, Oh Kay!, Smash, and more. Bramwell Tovey joins the Orchestra on August 14 for Rimsky-Korsakov’s Suite from The Snow Maiden, Waldteufel’s ”The Skaters” Waltz, and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. Also on the program are selections from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, featuring members of New York City Ballet. On August 15 Tovey leads Delius’s “The Walk to the Paradise Garden,” from A Village Romeo and Juliet, Holst’s The Planets, and Elgar’s Cello Concerto, performed by Johannes Moser.
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin returns to Saratoga for the last full week of concerts, August 19-22, joined by Concertmaster David Kim, pianist Beatrice Rana, and violinist Joshua Bell. On August 19 David Kim performs Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto; also on that program are Brahms’s Tragic Overture and Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony. Yannick and chamber ensembles of The Philadelphia Orchestra take the stage on August 20, performing a program of Saint-Saëns, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, and Massenet. Also on the program: the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s co-artistic director Wu Han and Yannick perform Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, alternating movements between the piano four hands version, where they will play side-by-side, and the full -more- The Philadelphia Orchestra Celebrates Summer with Concerts in Philadelphia and Beyond 4 orchestral version, which Yannick conducts. Finally, Yannick and the Orchestra close out the summer season on August 22 with an 1812 Spectacular, featuring Leopold Stokowski’s orchestration of Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C-sharp minor, Nico Muhly’s acclaimed Mixed Messages, and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

Dvořák: From the New World July 12 at 6 PM – Sunday evening – Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, Vail
American violinist Benjamin Beilman performs Higdon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Concerto, which starts eerily and grows with the rhapsodic solo violin. Completing the evening is Dvořák’s rich celebration of Americana, a work inspired in part by American Indian music and African-American spirituals, as well as the sprawling plains of Middle America.
