Partners that trust each other generate greater profits, serve customers better, and are more adaptable. In industries as diverse as pharmaceuticals, consumer packaged goods, hardware, apparel, and furniture, the balance of power between manufacturers and retailers is shifting. Thanks to the rise of specialty superstores, the formation of buying alliances, and a consolidating wave of mergers and acquisitions, a relative handful of retailers often now control access to enormous numbers of consumers.
