Graduate Program in Fine Arts The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Robert Derr, Advisor Alison Crocetta Tony Mendoza Copyright by Joshua David Cloud 2011 Abstract Making With Caution, my most recent art installation, will serve as an investigation into the meaning of death and dying. It will be on display at the Urban Art Space, in Columbus, Ohio, and will operate as a culmination of my formal education in contemporary fine art. Furthermore, it will operate as evidence of my very existence, and will abstractly illustrate the quiescence of death and dying through a video, perceived live performance, and sculpture. Each of these three components will be deconstructed in great detail in regards to their conversation in fine art and religion. In the following pages, I will examine how art may appease the overwhelming angst associated with death and dying, which consequently allows me to enjoy, savor, and appreciate the little time I have on earth. I remember I was thirteen because my closest friend, Max, was thirteen too. In dog years, Max was 91 years old. At that time, I had never lived without him. Our relationship was not all that different than most young boys and their first dog—he was a faithful companion and a loyal friend. He was a consoler and could cure just about any bad day with just the warmth of his soft golden fur. He harbored me during the times I was afraid to go to bed. Stretched on the foot of the bed, his 80 pounds was very constricting on a single sized mattress. However, he would, without hesitation, save me from the creaks and noises heard throughout the night. He was more than an average friend—we were very close. When I reflect on my childhood, Max was almost always present in my fondest memories. After years of watching his body deteriorate, we held a family meeting to determine the next appropriate steps. My mother calmly explained that I would be the one who would ultimately determine his future. It was in late August, just four months before his 14th birthday, when I made the decision to put him down. When the scheduled day came, my mother asked if I wanted to stay home from school and go to the animal hospital with her. I reluctantly said, “No, it will be too hard. I just can’t do it.” I was totally convinced if I had, I would have broken down, 1 changed my mind, and forced my Mom to cancel the appointment before we even got to the car. She accepted my decision, and gave me my final minutes alone with Max. I cried while petting him over and over, telling him “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

    AKHTAR JAMAL KHAN, BIBHUDUTT DASH Approaches to Angst and the Male World: A Comparative Study of The Bell Jar and the Poetry of a Few Indian Women Poets Pitting Sylvia Plath’s speakers against male chauvinism is a usual critical practice, but this antinomy primarily informs her work. Most of her writings express an anguish that transcends the torment of the individual speakers in question, and voices or represents the despair of all women who undergo similar anguish. As David Holbrook writes: “When one knows Sylvia Plath’s work through and through, and has penetrated her inner topography, the confusion, hate and madness become frighteningly apparent” (357). The besetting question is what causes this angst. Apparently, a stifling patriarchal system that sty- mies woman’s freedom seems to be the cause of this anguish. However, it would be lopsided to say that Plath’s work is simply an Armageddon between man and woman. This paper compares Sylvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar (1963) and the poetry of a few twentieth-century Indian women poets such as Kamala Das, Mamta Kalia, Melanie Silgardo, Eunice de Souza, Smita Agarwal and Tara Patel to study the angst experienced by the speakers and their approaches to the male world. Here, the term ‘male world’ refers to any social condition where man overtly or tacitly punctuates a woman’s life. Thus, it precisely refers to a patriarchal social order. Talking about twentieth-century poetry and making references to the posi- tion of women poets, John Brannigan writes: “In their time, Elizabeth Jennings, Sylvia Plath and Eliza- beth Bishop seemed isolated and remote from the male-dominated generation of the fifties and sixties” (Poplawski 632).

    HOME ART CULTURE FILM MUSIC STYLE E MAGAZINE A STRUGGLE WITH MEANING - THE ART OF MOUNIR FATMI It was shock, angst, and inescapable panic that introduced me to the work of Mounir Fatmi, a 'French artist in USA, an African artist in Europe'. His kinetic installation Modern Times – A History of the Machine, on show in Denmark's Brandts 131 gallery, sends the viewer into somatic A portrait of Mounir Fatmi overdrive, yet remains acutely conceptual, as it employs referential elements pertaining to both Western and Eastern (Islamic) aesthetics. Visual repetition, perpetual circular motion, illegible Arabic calligraphy, and aggressive sound create a sense of danger, announcing an imminent clash of worlds embracing the mechanics of modernity, but struggling to grasp the essence of it. At times, Fatmi's works tap into strands of speculative philosophy, often breaking down bonds of meaning: objects are dislocated, taken beyond their instrumentality, reconceptualized, separated from the burden of a necessary relation to their qualities, in a potential attempt to explore what Graham Harman would call the 'object oriented ontology'. In Between the Lines, a steel circular saw blade becomes the inscription surface for Quoran verses, which undergo a process of being emptied of semiotic content and rendered decorative elements. Revisiting classical aesthetics in the light of recent psychological research, we present a novel model to explain this much discussed (apparent) paradox. We argue that negative emotions are an important resource for the arts in general, rather than a special license for exceptional art forms only. The underlying rationale is that negative emotions have been shown to be particularly powerful in securing attention, intense emotional involvement, and high memorability, and hence is precisely what artworks strive for.     KINDRED AMBIVALENCE: ART AND THE ADULT-CHILD DYNAMIC IN AMERICA’S COLD WAR by MICHAEL MARBERRY A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of English in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2010 Copyright Michael Marberry 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT The pervasive ideological dimension of the Cold War resulted in an extremely ambivalent period in U.S. history, marked by complex and conflicting feelings. Nowhere is this ambivalence more clearly seen than in the American home and in the relationship between adults and children. Though the adult-child dynamic has frequently harbored ambivalent feelings, the American Cold War era—with its increased emphasis on the family in the face of ideological struggle—served to highlight this ambivalence. Believing that art reveals historical and cultural concerns, this project explores the extent to which adult-child ambivalence is prominent within American art from the period—particularly, the coming-of-age story, as it is a genre intrinsically concerned with the interactions between adults and children. Chapter one features an analysis of Katherine Anne Porter’s “Old Order” coming-of-age sequence, specifically “The Source” and “The Circus.” Establishing Porter’s relevance to the Cold War period, this chapter illustrates how her young heroine (Miranda Gay) experiences ambivalence within her familial relationships—which, in turn, comes to foreshadow and represent the adult-child ambivalence within the Cold War period. Chapter two expands its scope to include a larger historical context and a different artistic mode.
