This course falls into social analysis and visual and performance arts analysis and practice because it shows how punk, as a subculture, has influenced alternative economic practices, led to political mobilization, and challenged social norms. This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. Light in the Dark Places: or, Memorial of Christian Life in the Middle Ages. Author(s): Neander, Augustus (1789-1850) Publisher: Grand Rapids, MI: Christian Classics Ethereal Library Description: Augustus Neander began his religious studies in speculative theory, but his changing interests led him to the study of church history. In his book, Light in the Dark Places, Neander©s talent as a writer and a historian is tremendously evident; collected within this volume is an abundance of re- markable information about church history. Neander shares information about the lives of Christian individuals and com- munities during times of darkness and of triumph. Neander also reveals unknown facts about early missionaries and martyrs of the church. This historical analysis will provide today©s Christians with insight into the church©s elaborate past, so that they may learn from previous mistakes and embrace habits of righteousness. • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

  • Israeli Culture in the Czech Republic 2015
ISRAELI CULTURE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC 2015 Yoav Brill: Hora. Queer Film Festival Mezipatra. November 2015. ISRAELI CULTURE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC 2015 Dear friends of Israeli culture, The year 2015 was exceptional in several ways. In April, it has been exactly 25 years since the first visit of Czechoslovak president to Israel: Václav Havel in April 1990 celebrated in this way the freshly renewed diplomatic ties between the two countries. Václav Havel’s legacy, very much valued in Israel, was remembered and relived through a large series of events, from discussions with notable guests to jazz and rock concerts and children workshops. We all had a lot of fun! Also, the Czech city of Pilsen was the European Capital of Culture in 2015. And Israeli culture was a significant part of the programme: in June, the days of Jerusalem expanded from Prague to Pilsen with a wide scale of events from fashion shows and art exhibitions to film screenings and dance performances. Throughout the rest of the year, the Pilsen audience could attend more Israeli events – puppet theatre performances, street music, and much more. The biggest joint exhibition of Czech and Israeli conceptual artists ever took place in the Prague Mekka of contemporary art, MeetFactory. And the established connections are about to develop in 2016, which makes us really happy. We cannot omit to mention dance: it has always been a big part of the Czech-Israeli cultural exchange, but in 2015, it has reached new heights: the living legend Ohad Naharin came to Prague twice within a month to first work with the dancers of National Theater on his choreography Decadance, very successfully staged until now, and then to be present at his Bathseva’s performance at Dance Prague festival gala evening, once again to a massive acclaim.
