African American healing women are prominent in African American literature, but are largely underrepresented in the discourse surrounding African American women, representation, and literary figures. My research reconstructs the negative connotation attached to women healers in the United States which, in part, recounts the life of Tituba, a female slave of African or Indian descent, who figured at the center of the Salem Witch Trials controversy. The historical lives of Marie Laveau, mother and daughter, are also interrogated as evidence of the othering of conjure women by the dominant culture. I examine the lore cycle of conjurers in early African American literature and suggest that a movement away from Eurocentric representations to a more culturally specific rendering of the conjure woman occurred during the twentieth century. Citing Charles Chesnutt’s The Conjure Woman as a precursory text and employing Tituba and Marie Laveau as ancestral figures, I argue that contemporary authors like Gloria Naylor, Arthur Flowers, Jewell Parker Rhodes, and Ntozake Shange resurrect the conjure woman by reinscribing the figure into their works in such a way that undermines the negative connotations that have been associated with conjuring and African-based religions. vii I reference several African American novels to evidence how writers are re- appropriating a once negative image. Specific issues addressed in such an analysis include the community involvement of conjure women, the effectiveness of healing practices, the legitimacy of power, moral character, the influence of Christianity, and the debunking of stereotypes. I also take into account the relationship between conjure and blues music in a discussion that positions African American authors and film- makers as agents in reclaiming conjure women as folk heroes. This dissertation project provides a historiography and an in-depth analysis of conjure women, one that is intended to aid in the critical and cultural understanding of African American women and spirit work within the African American literary tradition. INTRODUCTION “Where there are preachers, there are also Conjurers; where there are conversions, there are dreams and visions. And where there is faith, there is, and ever continues to be, magic.” ~Yvonne Chireau Chireau’s assertion that there is a thin differential line between religious fervor and the supernatural speaks loudly about the permanence of folk magic among people of African descent. In May 2003, that permanence moved to new levels of acceptance when the American Express credit card company aired an advertisement on primetime network television in which two African American members of the NBA team, the New Orleans Hornets, paid a local conjure woman—with their American Express card, of course—to put a ‘fix’ on the jersey of Los Angeles Lakers player, Kobe Bryant, in anticipation of the first round of the post-season playoff series. As the commercial aired, I began jotting down ideas on how I planned to turn my fascination with women and magic into a dissertation project for the completion of a doctoral program I had not yet entered. This research project takes as its focus African American literature and folklore. I am most interested in the point where these two fields intersect, particularly as it relates to the African American woman healer, or conjure woman. My project seeks to investigate the conjure woman—a character

Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans.

Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of techniques, as we will see in this course. No matter which method is used, the most imperative aspect is the interpretation and presentation of what is seen.

Co-Author- Dr. Vivek Kumar, Law College, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun. Abstract Witch hunting and branding women as a witch is essentially a legacy of violence against women in our society. By punishing those women who are seen as vile and wild, oppressors perhaps want to send a not so subtle message to women: docility and domesticity get rewarded; anything else gets punished. As soon as the women steps out their prescribed roles, they become targets. When women are branded as witches they are made to walk naked through the village, they are gang-raped, at times cut their breasts off, break their teeth or heads and forced to swallow urine and human faeces or eat human flesh or drink the blood of a chicken. There are thousands of women who face such brutal violence in each and every rural parts of India and superstitions are probably made to be the main reason behind all the murders and brutality towards women when the truth is they are simply used as an scapegoats and “superstitions are used as an excuse” only to hide the true motive behind those murders and brutality. This can also be called as a caste based practice where the members of upper caste society try to condemn and deter the poor and indigenous people by branding them as witches. Frank Lloyd Wright, architect (1869-1959) For many of us growing up in the 1960s rural South, the world of ghosts, witches and magic was never far away. Grandparents and parents often told hair-raising stories of mysterious happenings and eerie events as a form of entertainment, as children sat entranced in wide-eyed amazement. The idea of a ghost or witch out there in the dark filled many a night with excitement and wonder. In many homes, the sense of the presence of a beloved, deceased family member was often noted with comfort and the reassurance that we would someday “meet on that golden shore.” In this era, before the Internet and television’s mindless absorption of our free time, we often felt we could sense that which was unseen, and provided we didn’t make too much of a fuss about it, we were free to believe in the miraculous without fear of rebuke or censure.

Flower divination is a special digital divination method that uses flowers and plants as a medium, and it has become a common cultural image in Song Ci. Flower and grass divination uses the odd and even number of petals and other body parts as hexagrams or double leaves and combined stems as auspicious signs as its test methods. The reason why the image of flower and grass divination can flourish in Song Ci is closely related to the highly developed divination culture and flower trade in the Song Dynasty. It also contains the national consciousness and national experience of number worship and number divination. KEYWORDS: flower divination, digital divination, cultural image, national consciousness 1. Introduction The Song Dynasty was a period of relatively prosperous culture, and divination was an important part of Song Dynasty culture. From the emperor to the ordinary citizens, divination penetrated into their cultural life and became a special sight in the urban life of the Song Dynasty. Take the literati as an example. Since the Jiayou period, "literati and bureaucrats have always used hexagram shadows". Flower and grass divination is a special way of divination. It uses flowers, grass, and leaves as the medium, and mostly uses odd and even numbers as hexagrams as its external manifestation. It is more common in Song Ci and became one of Song Ci.
