Definitely better than the first volume - the characters start acting a bit more Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham they have historically - and the plot moves along at a decent pace while still having time to start delving into the characters. Aug 22, Tim B rated it really liked it Shelves: captain-britain-and-related. The series continues to be well written with great plot lines. This collection is not stand alone, it is the bridge from part 1 to part 3. We see glimpses of . More is learned Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham , and somehow, Union Jack kind of disappears. Alistair becomes very important. Mar 28, Jdetrick rated it liked it Shelves: ebooksgenre-comicsgenre-superheroespublisher-marvel. This works better than the first volume, slowing down to give us some actual character development. That said, it's still missing something Sep 07, Orrin Grey rated it really liked it Shelves: comics. I'd been told that Captain Britain and MI13 was something that I ought to read, and it sounded up my alley, so I picked up an issue in a comic store and opened to a page where was having a meeting with Dr. Doom on the moon. And I realized that that panel was what I had been waiting for my whole life. So I picked up the series. Of course, I got the second volume before I got the first one and that scene doesn't look like it'll be showing up 'til the thirdbut still This is more or le I'd been told that Captain Britain and MI13 was something that I ought to read, and it sounded up my alley, so I picked up an issue in a comic store and opened to a page where Dracula was having a meeting with Dr. This is more or less exactly what I would write if Marvel would give me access to a handful of their C-list characters, and I was especially happy to see Pete Wisdom in the ranks. Also Blade is as good in this as I've ever seen him, and there are lots of neat ideas being tossed around. This is pretty much exactly what I want from mainstream comics, right here. The aforementioned also wrote some episodes of Dr. Who and a host of other TV shows, or so I' told, and that makes sense, as Captain Britain and MI13 reads, more than anything, like a version of an ensemble TV show. In a good way. The continuity is pretty heavy especially starting the second Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham rather than the first, but what're you going to do but nothing ever gets as murky as some other comics I've read recently. And the art, while nothing that made me jump out of my seat, is solid and gets the job done nicely Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham. Mar 21, Erik rated it liked it. Volume two picks up right where volume one left off, with Britain's small but mighty superhero team heading to Birmingham to meet up Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham Captain Midlands -- a regional defender who I honestly have never heard of before and he may be a new character for all I know -- in order to confront a new threat to its inhabitants, the nefarious Dr. Plotka and the Mindless One. Although I'm finally getting used to Kirk's art, I can't help but think it would be better if he had better inkers -- as I'm sure his pencils are out of this world, as it is often the case with semi-decent finished comic book art. But what ends up on the printed page looks like DC house art -- and that's no compliment. Now the covers, on the other hand, are fun to behold; as Stuart Immonen and are given cover duties on two of them. Feb 09, Mike rated it liked it. Easily the weakest collection in the short-lived series, but still fun. The storyline deals with an apartment block in England coming under the influence of a demon who grants people the ability to live out their fantasies and MI is required to solve the problem. There are some nice ideas introduced, and the development of Captain Midlands who was easily my least favorite character is nicely handled. It's not bad, but the story felt like it could have been told in about half as much time. T Easily the weakest collection in the short-lived series, but still fun. That said, some of the elements that are set up here come into play later on with pretty spectacular payoffs. I'd recommend reading this once just so you can keep track of everything in the series, but you probably won't feel much of a need to re-read it after that. Oct 10, Khairul Hezry rated it it was Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham Shelves: graphic-novels. Didn't like this volume as much as the first one but still good overall. The memorable part is of course the Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham page: Dracula is on the moon, planning to invade Earth and he wants to an alliance with Dr. This kind of crazy-awesomeness is why I still bother to read superhero Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham. Jan 11, Rachael rated it really liked it Shelves:comics. More Paul Cornell I was on a roll. The plot behind this one was a little twistier, so I didn't pay much attention. Love the inclusion of Blade, really love getting extra insight into each character. Ready to jump right in to the next book! Aug 08, Tamara rated it liked it. Much easier to get into than the first trade. Makes me want to pick up the Excalibur series I totally skipped to find out what the heck happened to Meggan. Apr 15, K. Had thought these were priced out of my range. But found brand new copies cheap on Book Depository! Just started reading grapic novels again and this was the second volume of the series I have read. Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham better than the first and one of the best team books I have read in a very long time. Aug 17, Wendy rated it liked it Shelves: comics. I'm coming in in the middle of the story arc, not having read volume 1. At the moment, I'd say that I'm intrigued, but not completely hooked. May well change my mind when I've read vol. This weekend, superhero sequel : The Winter Soldier will be slinging his mighty shield around a multiplex near you:. This may seem odd coming from a Chomsky-chomping left-leaner like myself, but I devoured his comic-book adventures as a kid and have no problem reconciling a lifelong fondness for the character with a lifelong disdain for certain American institutions, administrations and assholes. To me, Captain America — when handled right, at least — is an idealised representation of all the things I like and respect about the US. On a more practical level, this patriotic hero with his trademark shield was one of the few comic characters that an 80s kid growing up in working class North Birmingham could easily identify with. In case you missed it, the first Captain America film told the story of Steve Rogers, an impoverished, idealistic, wartime weakling who longed to join the US Army and beat the Goddamn Shit out of Nazis. After several years of successfully beating the Goddamn Shit out of Nazis, he found himself frozen in a block of ice only to reawaken in the modern era, just in time for The film. Some may even realise that Marvel Comics has its very own UK-based patriotic superhero called — you guessed it — Captain Britain. Luckily, an ideal candidate already exists. Yes, that sprawling and overpopulated metafictional monstrosity that is the Marvel Comics Universe actually contains a patriotic, shield-slinging, living legend of World War II who is also a Brummie. If the likes of Captains America and Britain are in the language of the aviation industry national flag-carriers, then Captain Midlands is in the argot of social media a hyperlocal hero. Unlike his A-List Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham who habitually deal with big name supervillains and interplanetary threats, Captain Midlands spends most of his time rehabilitating low-level ASBO Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham and battling tower block crack dens. And while the big shot patriotic heroes represent some kind of noble, nationalistic ideal, Captain Midlands is a lot more — shall we say — down to earth. It featured Captain Britain, Captain Midlands and Blade the Vampire Slayer yes, that one battling a monstrous psychic critter that terrorised the good people of Hodge Hill. This is Captain Midlands. His name? Captain Midlands. Somebody should give Shane Meadows Captain Britain and MI13: Hell Comes to Birmingham call. About the Author: Tom Lennon.
