They will address the (more than ambivalent) role of the EU in promoting institutional change in the Mediterranean and/or the EU’s influence on other regional organizations in Asia, Africa and Latin America. This paper is part of a special issue of West European Politics . A copy of the paper is available upon request. Tanja A. Börzel is professor of political science and holds the Chair for European Integration at the Otto-Suhr-Institut for Political Science, Freie Universität Berlin. She is co-coordinator of the Research College "The Transformative Power of Europe" and directs the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence “Europe and its Citizens”. Her most recent publications include “ Coping with Accession to the European Union. New Modes of Environmental Governance ” (Palgrave, 2010, edited volume) and “European Governance - Negotiation and Competition in the Shadow of Hierarchy” (Journal of Common Market Studies 2010, 48, 2). Thomas Risse is professor of international politics at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. He is the co-ordinator of the Research Center “Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood” and co-director of the Research College “Transformative Power of Europe,” both funded by the German Research Foundation. He has taught at the European University Institute, the University of Konstanz, and at various U.S. universities, including Cornell, Harvard, Stanford, and Yale. He is the author of A Community of Europeans? (Cornell University Press, 2010) and editor of Governance without a State? (Columbia University Press, 2011). .

Europeans, it seems, are quite aware of the fact that money is not only about eco- nomics and finance, but also about nation-building and state identity (Helleiner 1997, 1998). In fact, money is among the most important identity markers in people’s daily lives. The European Union (EU) lacks the symbols and identity markers which are quite common in our nation states - – apart from the European flag (but who knows in Europe that Beethoven’s “ode of joy” is the European anthem?). As a result, the euro is probably the most important symbolic reminder of a common European fate at this point in time. This paper argues that the euro is as much about collective identity pertaining to Europeanization, as it is about economic and monetary issues.

Theories of International Relations
Theories of International Relations This book is a comprehensive guide to theories of International Relations (IR). Given the limitations of a paradigm-based approach, it sheds light on eighteen theories and new theoretical perspectives in IR by examining the work of key reference theorists. The chapters are all written to a common template: the introductory section provides readers with a basic understanding of the theory’s genesis by locating it within an intellectual tradition, paying particular attention to the historical and political context. The second section elaborates on the theory as formulated by the selected reference theorist. After this account of the theory’s core elements, the third section turns to theoretical variations, examining conceptual subdivisions and overlaps, further developments and internal critique. The fourth section scrutinizes the main criticisms emanating from other theoretical perspectives and highlights points of contact with recent research in IR. The fi fth and fi nal section consists of a bibliography carefully compiled to aid students’ further learning. Encompassing a broad range of mainstream, traditional theories as well as emerging and critical perspectives, this is an original and ground-breaking textbook for students of International Relations. The German edition of the book won the “Geisteswissenschaften International” Prize, collectively awarded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the German Federal Foreign Offi ce and the German Publishers & Booksellers Association. Domestic Politics and Norm Diffusion in International Relations This book collects Thomas Risse’s most important articles together in a single volume.
