When Europeanization Meets Diffusion: Exploring New Territory

Professor Börzel and Professor Risse will discuss the diffusion of EU institutions, focusing on the Southern Neighbourhood, including Israel. They will address the (more than ambivalent) role of the EU in promoting institutional change in the Mediterranean and/or the EU’s influence on other regional organizations in Asia, Africa and Latin America. This paper is part of a special issue of West European Politics . A copy of the paper is available upon request.

Tanja A. Börzel is professor of political science and holds the Chair for European Integration at the Otto-Suhr-Institut for Political Science, Freie Universität Berlin. She is co-coordinator of the Research College "The Transformative Power of Europe" and directs the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence “Europe and its Citizens”. Her most recent publications include “ Coping with Accession to the . New Modes of Environmental Governance ” (Palgrave, 2010, edited volume) and “European Governance - Negotiation and Competition in the Shadow of Hierarchy” (Journal of Common Market Studies 2010, 48, 2).

Thomas Risse is professor of international politics at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. He is the co-ordinator of the Research Center “Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood” and co-director of the Research College “Transformative Power of Europe,” both funded by the German Research Foundation. He has taught at the European University Institute, the University of Konstanz, and at various U.S. universities, including Cornell, Harvard, Stanford, and Yale. He is the author of A Community of Europeans? (Cornell University Press, 2010) and editor of Governance without a State? (Columbia University Press, 2011).
