Matthew Mead interviews Stone Roses rhythm guitarist Andy Couzens for This Is The Daybreak (27/09/13). What music were you into, growing up ? I was into 70s punk (The Pistols, The Ramones, etc) but liked a lot of Tamla and Atlantic soul too (Otis Redding etc). I was also into 50s rock ‘n’ roll. How did you first get to know Ian, John, Pete and Reni ? I met Ian and John at South Trafford College along with Si Wolstencroft when Ian asked me to join The Patrol. Pete was a part of a gang that used to hang round where Ian and John lived in Timperley. Reni came along later in response to an advert we put up in a music shop in town. Who were you closest to in the Roses ? Despite all the arguing, we were all pretty tight, no favourites on my part and then ... we weren't. Listening to the bootlegs, the early gigs sound like riotous affairs ? Yes, the early gigs were pretty wild and the audiences reacted in pretty much the same way, even when songs like I Wanna Be Adored and This Is The One were dropped in the set. Although that did start to change as the set started to include Sally Cinnamon, (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister, etc. What was your favourite gig with the Roses and why ? I don't have a particular favourite gig. Having said that, I enjoyed all the gigs in Sweden. Good times... Tell us about the Garage Flower songs. This album represented our first set, with the first song we ever wrote together as the Roses, namely Just A Little Bit (originally called Nowhere Fast), followed by Mission Impossible and Tradjic Roundabout.

C'è da fare un distinguo importante: in Italia il fenomeno Casual, quello pre-massa, è indiscutibilmente legato all'entrata di molti kids che già avevano preso parte a sottoculture, o ne venivano influenzati sulle gradinate. Non era difficile infatti vedere molti ragazzi, specie legati allo stile Mod, vestiti "casual '80" in occasione di partite della loro squadra del cuore: Adidas (modelli anni 80' con suola bassa su tutti: Samba, Universal, Samba super, Reckord), giacche di tute Tacchini, Lacoste, Fila, jeans -i classici 501 da stringere o i 505 per i cultori della "sigaretta".

Media reviews: Memories of fans: I am not the biggest fan of The Stone Roses but it turns out I was at their first ever gig. So, a mate of mine told me that I should share my story and I was pointed in your direction. So here we go. You can have this. It was the first time I saw Pete Townshend live and I was (and still am) an avid fan of The Who, but before I seen him I waited anxiously and watched the support group. Recently I found out that they were a little known group called The Stone Roses. They turned out to be the biggest band of their generation. I remember very little of their set. But I can remember them like The Cure. I remember how the singer was in charge of the stage. That was a week after I turned 17 and not only did I manage to see my hero, Pete Townshend for the first time but I managed to see, possibly the inventors of Brit-pop and saviours of British guitar rock, The Stone Roses. I saw the Stone Roses at Leicester many years later and there was a difference but more memory with the latter. I was speaking to a friend in Brussels who did have photos of The Stone Roses live at the Moonlight in 1984 but sold them around 1995 to a collector in London for £700.
