Indeed over the years, it was only the 2009-2010 season that we found ourselves in the same division of the same league. We did a little better in the away match, winning by the only goal of the game courtesy of Byron Harrison. This season our opponents are doing well, currently sitting in 4th place, with 24 points from 14 games played. They have slipped a little recently, losing at home to Tooting & Mitcham last week and also to Chipstead. They have though won at Egham Town and 3-0 at home to Uxbridge. There’s no point in dwelling on it but we were well beaten overall last week at Northwood. We just didn’t seem to be at the races in the first half, which was disappointing after some decent results before that. Having conceded a third goal soon after the break we did final- ly get things going and can argue that we were unlucky with two efforts coming back off the woodwork, a “goal” ruled out by what must have been the tightest of margins, and a number of other efforts that went close. Hopefully, there will be a desire to redress the balance today, especially as we often tend to play better against the top teams and Wal- tham certainly come into that category at the moment. Prior to that we beat Horley Town in the Surrey Senior Cup to give ourselves a home match against Chipstead in the next round. Horley were unimpressive on the night and our win by 4 goals to 1 meant they got off fairly lightly, considering all the pressure. This is now the most senior cup competition left for us this season. Before that we are also at home again on Tuesday when FC Romania are the visitors, for a 7.45 p.m. kick-off. We know little about them except that they won promotion at the last minute as the club in Step 5 (Essex Senior League) with the best points per game record who hadn’t been pro- moted as a matter of course, following the closure of a Barnsley based club, Shaw Lane Aquaforce as this is how it works. In the process Fleet Town were moved over to the Southern League at the last minute and this really is something the FA need to think about as it can’t be right to suddenly move clubs AFTER the initial allocations have been an- nounced. Surely any adjustments required after that should be done at a more local level. Well done to the Ladies who, having beaten Whyteleafe in the Isthmian Ladies Cup, will now entertain Margate in the next round on a date to be decided. Ladies (all ladies) we need you here on Friday 30 November for our latest Hen Night. There is a big poster up in the clubhouse and the artists shown are the ones who will actu- ally be appearing! Tickets (£10) are available behind the bar now or let Sally know. Finally, a welcome to our match officials this afternoon and enjoy the match . 3 For all the latest club news, visit our website at www.ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com SO JUST HOW GOOD IS YOUR GENERAL KNOWLEDGE…… HAVE A GO AT COMPLETING THIS QUIZ. Both clubs gained numerous honours in the Northern Suburban League. The club was founded in 1944 with a mix of players from Waltham Abbey Youth Club and former juniors from Tottenham Hotspur un- der the leadership of the trainer and manager Wally Hickman. The secretary was Mo (Maurice) Ward. The President was Capt. Lar- kin. In their early years they played to a high standard and reached the final of the Herts Junior Cup in three years out of four but lost on each occasion – including a loss to Redbourn Rovers of 4–5 after they had been leading 4–1. Some of the leading players in the early years included left winger Dave Cook who was killed in a road crash, centre-half Robbo Rob- inson and inside forward Frank Blower. Frank later became a dedi- cated treasurer of the club with Ray Buck as a similarly dedicated club secretary. Waltham Abbey United emerged in the late sixties and a new club- house was built. In 1974 the club amalgamated with the successful Beechfield Sports and joined the Metropolitan League, which later became the London Spartan League. In 1976 the club won the Essex Junior Cup and later that summer dropped the Beechfield Sports tag on the advice of The FA. Two years later the club reached the final of the Essex Intermediate Cup and won the league’s Division One title, and, having gained Senior Status, were promoted. In their first season they won the title without losing a game . 6 For all the latest club news, visit our website at www.ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com and were again promoted this time to the Premier Division where they remained until season 2000–01. Season 2001–02 was spent in the Essex & Herts Border Combi- nation to allow them to move across the pyramid. They were elect- ed to the Essex Senior League for season 2002–03. In 2004–05, in addition to winning both the League Cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy they finished in their highest position of 3rd. In 1990–91 the club were inaugural finalists in the Roy Bailey Memorial Trophy, a competition for local teams including Chesh- unt, Ware, and Hertford Town. It was won for the first time in 1994–95 when they beat Hoddesdon Town. In both 1996–97 and 2005 (in the final held over from the previous season) they beat St Margaretsbury. In 1998–99 they won the London Senior Cup with a fine 3–2 win over Bedfont at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground, and they also secured the Spartan South Midlands Challenge Trophy. Recent seasons have seen a lot of changes on and off the pitch with floodlights being installed in 1990 and the ground levelled. A great amount of work has been done around the clubhouse and a 200-seater stand built.
