Duo Sonatas and Sonatinas for Two Clarinets, Or Clarinet and Another Woodwind Instrument: an Annotated Catalog
DUO SONATAS AND SONATINAS FOR TWO CLARINETS, OR CLARINET AND ANOTHER WOODWIND INSTRUMENT: AN ANNOTATED CATALOG D.M.A. DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Yu-Ju Ti, M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2009 D.M.A Document Committee: Approved by Professor James Pyne, co-Advisor Professor Alan Green, co-Advisor ___________________________ Professor James Hill Co-advisor Professor Robert Sorton ___________________________ Co-advisor Music Graduate Program Copyright by Yu-Ju Ti 2009 ABSTRACT There are few scholarly writings that exist concerning unaccompanied duet literature for the clarinet. In the late 1900s David Randall and Lowell Weiner explored the unaccompanied clarinet duets in their dissertations “A Comprehensive Performance Project in Clarinet Literature with an Essay on the Clarinet Duet From ca.1715 to ca.1825” and “The Unaccompanied Clarinet Duet Repertoire from 1825 to the Present: An Annotated Catalogue”. However, unaccompanied duets for clarinet and another woodwind instrument are seldom mentioned in the academic literature and are rarely performed. In an attempt to fill the void, this research will provide a partial survey of this category. Because of the sheer volume of the duet literature, the scope of the study will be limited to original compositions entitled Sonata or Sonatina written for a pair of woodwind instruments which include at least one clarinet. Arrangements will be cited but not discussed. All of the works will be annotated, evaluated, graded by difficulty, and comparisons will be made between those with similar style. -

Cohesion of Composer and Singer: the Female Singers of Poulenc
COHESION OF COMPOSER AND SINGER: THE FEMALE SINGERS OF POULENC DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan Joanne Musselman, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Document Committee: J. Robin Rice, Adviser Approved by: Hilary Apfelstadt Wayne Redenbarger ________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Susan Joanne Musselman 2007 ABSTRACT Every artist’s works spring from an aspiring catalyst. One’s muses can range from a beloved city to a spectacular piece of music, or even a favorite time of year. Francis Poulenc’s inspiration for song-writing came from the high level of intimacy he had with his close friends. They provided the stimulation and encouragement needed for a lifetime of composition. There is a substantial amount of information about Francis Poulenc’s life and works available. We are fortunate to have access to his own writings, including a diary of his songs, an in-depth interview with a close friend, and a large collection of his correspondence with friends, fellow composers, and his singers. It is through these documents that we not only glean knowledge of this great composer, but also catch a glimpse of the musical accuracy Poulenc so desired in the performance of his songs. A certain amount of scandal surrounded Poulenc during his lifetime and even well after his passing. Many rumors existed involving his homosexuality and his relationships with other male musicians, as well as the possible fathering of a daughter. The primary goal of this document is not to unearth any hidden innuendos regarding his personal life, however, but to humanize the relationships that Poulenc had with so many of his singers. -
A Feminist Analysis Of
A Feminist Analysis of Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Oboe and Piano A thesis submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2006 by Margaret Jean Grant B.M, University of Georgia, 1977 M.F.A., University of Georgia, 1979 M.M., Florida State University, 1986 ABSTRACT Francis Poulenc’s final work, his Sonata for oboe and piano, is one of the standard works in the oboe repertoire. However, this beloved sonata presents many puzzles and challenges for the thoughtful performer. This thesis came about because of those puzzles and challenges. One of the most exciting and innovative directions in music scholarship has come from the feminist movement and its many influences on the way scholars look at, talk about, listen to, and perform music. Feminist music theory steps outside the bounds of traditional techniques, seeking ways to offer new kinds of music analysis that may have more value to a wider audience. This thesis begins with an overview of feminist waves, terms, and philosophies before moving to how feminism has influenced music scholarship. The second chapter explores feminist music theory, citing examples of analysis from important feminist music scholars and drawing conclusions about the nature and work of feminist music theory. The third chapter presents an analysis of Poulenc’s oboe sonata, drawing primarily upon feminist techniques but not neglecting traditional theoretical systems when appropriate. The analysis begins by discussing Poulenc’s contextuality, personal life, and musical style, and then proceeds to deconstruct the music. -
