WorldQuest International Trivia Competition

Like a little friendly competition? How about great door prizes? Or, the chance to become an international trivia champion? At WorldQuest, you can have it all and there’s a team or table with your name on it. One of the most anticipated events of the year, WorldQuest challenges teams of eight to correctly answer multiple-choice questions on a variety of international topics including flags, capitals, geography, people in the news, current events, 2016 Great Decisions topics, and Global ’s focus country – Colombia. Monday, Cine Colombia: Between Sea and Land NOVEMBER Help kick off our year-long celebration of Colombia with a cinematic reception and screening of Sundance award-winning Colombian film “Between Sea and Land,” presented by the Film Society of Minne- apolis St. Paul as part of their Cine Latino Film Festival, taking place 14 November 11-17. A breathtaking tour de force from actor and writer Manolo Cruz, the film, set on a small inlet adjacent to the Caribbean 5:00–7:00 pm Sea in Colombia, tells the moving story of 28-year-old Alberto and his mother Rosa. A screening of “Between Sea and Land” will take place after the reception at the Film Society’s St. Anthony Main The- atre. Tickets to the film are not included with reception registration.

Wednesday, GLOBAL CONVERSATIONS: Cuba and the U.S. DECEMBER The U.S. announced in December 2014 that, after decades of hostility, it would begin taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. The announcement marked a dramatic shift away from a policy that has its roots in the Cuban revolution of 1959. 14 In March 2016, this historic shift was officially set in motion by President Barack Obama’s visit to Cuba ― the first trip by a 5:30–7:30 pm sitting president in 88 years. FEATURING: Gary Prevost, political science professor at the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University, will discuss how American and Cuban leaders today are trying to find common ground on issues of mutual interest even as they continue to see the world through very different lenses.

Tuesday, U.S Foreign Policy Update with Tom Hanson JANUARY Join us for the ever-popular annual U.S. Foreign Policy Update with former career Foreign Service Officer Tom Hanson. Tom will explore and explain the latest foreign policy developments, trends, and challenges facing the U.S. and next president in the 24 upcoming year, including nuclear security, international trade, and U.S. relations with China and Latin America. This timely 5:30–8:00 pm and thought-provoking presentation is recommended for anyone interested in international relations. FEATURING: Tom Hanson’s U.S. Foreign Service postings included East Germany, France, Norway, the Soviet Union, Sweden, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Currently, Tom serves as Diplomat in Residence at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and is a frequent Global Minnesota speaker. He is also a board member of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights, U.S. Foundation.
