Danna Kostroun, histoire, Indiana University, Purdue University-Indianapolis, Etats- Unis et résidente 2016-2017 à l’IEA de Nantes Action against Uncertainty : The Case of Port-Royal This paper examines the relationship between action and uncertainty at Port Royal. The Cistercian convent of Port-Royal-des-Champs became famous in the 17th century as the center of a Catholic reform movement known as Jansenism. The community at Port-Royal was made up of the nuns who lived in the convent and a group of lay men and women who lived on the convent farm in pious retreat. The community is famous not only for its role in religious reform, but for the intellectual work of its members, who published philosophical and polemical treatises on a number of subjects. Port-Royal was an institution designed to confront uncertainty. Its members recognized many forms of uncertainty and developed different responses to them. The first form of uncertainty dealt with the relationship between humans and God. To confront this uncertainty, Port-Royal adhered to tradition (St. Augustine’s writings on grace) and performed acts of routine, ritual, and repetition (i.e. Blaise Pascal’s human “machine” behavior). The next source of uncertainty dealt with the natural universe and human institutions. To confront this uncertainty, they produced treatises on logic, education, grammar, medicine, and other fields, through which they sought to establish a normative order through reason. A third source of uncertainty was that created by human passions. Humans generated uncertainty when they allowed passions (such as a desire for wealth, domination, or power) to obscure, blind, or otherwise obstruct reason. -

PREFACE This thesis is the result of a two-year study of the literary- rhetorical tradition and its relationship to music, a relationship which ultimately- led to the Baroque doctrine of the affections. Rhetoric, in the ancient and non-pe jorativs sense, is a subject about which most per sons in this country know very little ; in modern times it appears to be reserved for classical scholars. A wealth of information is available, however, and in the first two chapters of this study an attempt is made to capsulize this history of rhetoric for the non-rhetorician and especial ly the musician. -

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-00045-2 - Feminism, Absolutism, and Jansenism: Louis XIV and the Port-Royal Nuns Daniella Kostroun Excerpt More information Introduction On October 29, 1709, King Louis XIV sent his royal lieutenant of police, along with 200 troops, into the valley of the Chevreuse, twelve miles west of Paris, to shut down the convent of Port-Royal-des-Champs. Sixty years earlier, Port-Royal had been a flourishing community containing more than 150 nuns. By 1709 there were only twenty-two left, all over the age of fifty and several of them infirm. On arrival, the lieutenant assembled the nuns in the convent’s parlor and read them an order from the royal council stating that they were to be removed from the convent “for the good of the state.” He then presented them with lettres de cachet (special royal warrants signed by the king) sentencing each nun to exile in separate convents across France. They had only three hours to pack their belongings, eat a final meal, and say good-bye to one another. He then loaded them into carriages and drove them away. Shortly after that, Louis XIV’s men exhumed Port-Royal’s cemetery, dumped the remains in a mass grave, and razed the buildings to the ground. How can we account for this episode in which Louis XIV personally ordered the destruction of a convent containing so few nuns? How could these women pose a threat to the state? Port-Royal’s destruction becomes even more mysterious when we consider that it occurred at a time of political and domestic crisis for the French Crown. -

Campa University of Tennessee at Chattanooga ABSTRACT: The Imago Primi Saeculi Societatis Iesv (1640) is, perhaps, the most beautiful book of emblems published by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century. The book is a festive com- memoration offered by the priests and students of the Flemish-Belgian Province in celebration of the centenary of the founding of the Society of Jesus. The work includes 127 full-page em- blems distributed throughout a total of 956 folio-sized pages that narrate and illustrate in em- blematic fashion the foundation, development, vicisstitudes and achievements of the Socirty in its evangelical and pedagogical mission. From the moment of its publication, the Imago was the object of attacks by Huguenauts and Jansenists who criticized its haughtiness, grandiloquent language and the hyperbolic comparisons of the narration. Hidden behind this criticism were the reasons for the Jansenist offensive against the book. Probabilism, the supposed frivolous attitude towards confession and the frequency of communion, advocated by the Jesuits, was the object of a pair of insulting treatises directed against the Imago by the famous Jansenists Antoine Arnauld and Issac Louis le Maître de Sacy. The critics of the Imago maliciously ignored that the book’s grandiloquent style, appropriate to a jubilation celebration, conforms to the language of classical rhetoric, thus perpetuating the propagandistic image of the book. -

2014 127 Diálogos, 96 (2014) pp. 127 TRUTH AND MEANING IN THE PORT-ROYAL LOGIC PIERRE BAUMANNi Abstract The redundancy theory of truth, according to which a sentence of the form ‘p’ is true is equivalent to p, is commonly attributed to the philosophers Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) and Frank Ramsey (1903- 1930), and is viewed as an important development in 20th century philosophical logic. In this paper I argue that such a perspective on truth may in fact be found much earlier, in Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Nicole’s Logic, or the Art of Thinking (also known as the Port-Royal Logic and published in its final form in 1683). Although ignored by many philosophers who work on the concept of truth today, Arnauld and Nicole should be credited as the originators of the redundancy theory. In addition to identifying and explaining the relevant passages of the Port-Royal Logic, I discuss the authors’ strikingly modern take on linguistic meaning. Their approach to this issue, also generally overlooked in current discussions, merits serious consideration, and, I argue, is to be preferred to other, currently popular, approaches to this topic. Silvia Berti Port-Royal at grips with its own casuistry and Pascal’s stand Je ne crains pas même vos censures Pascal, Pensées (La. 830 - Br. 920) A century before the Marquis of Pombal drove the Jesuits from Portugal (1759), and d’Alembert endorsed their expulsion from France in both historiographic and moral terms (1763), Pascal had already routed them. I’m referring of course to his literary masterpiece, the Provinciales (written and published between 1656 and 1657), his unsurpassed denunciation of the dual standards, extreme casuistry, ‘grâce suffisante’ and ‘pouvoir prochain’ they confidently theorized*. As d’Alembert wrote, “this masterpiece of pleasantry and eloquence delighted and appalled the whole of Europe at their expense … Their replies, ill written and full of bile, were never read yet all the world knew the Provinciales by heart”.1 An unequivocal statement of the solid conjunction in eighteenth-century French intelligentsia (beginning with the attraction-repulsion which yoked Voltaire to Pascal throughout his lifetime) of a strenuously anti- papal Jansenism with a spirit of secularism.2 This awareness is now lost, but was * In this essay, we often refer to terms at the core of the theological dispute between the Jansenists and the Sorbonne, which caused the condemnation by the latter of Antoine Arnauld’s most relevant text, De la fréquente communion (1643). PIERRE BAYLE AND HUMAN RIGHTS: LA LIBERTÉ DE LA CONSCIENCE THE GENESIS OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN WESTERN DEMOCRACY Robert Fulton Northern Illinois University It is a monster who during peace makes the evils of war, and whose pride knows no laws.1 In 1685, Louis XIV sent shock waves throughout Europe by revoking the longstanding Edict of Nantes, thereby signaling that he was ready to re-embrace Catholicism as the official religion of the kingdom. In doing so he created one of the largest diasporas of early modern times.2 More than 200,000 of the approximately one million Protestants fled France, using any means available, and some of the Huguenot émigrés formed a small but vocal group of exiles. Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) and Pierre Jurieu (1637-1713) were two Huguenots refugees who left France for the Netherlands even before the Revocation. However, the two of them could not have been more distinct in terms of their political beliefs. While both Bayle and Jurieu defended against ideological assaults by French Catholic intellectuals, Jurieu was just as vehement in his theoretical disputes with fellow Protestants. Bayle, despite his broader (and Enlightenment) reputation as a skeptic, was meanwhile advocating tolerance with respect to all religious beliefs. ‘Quel funeste poison? Racine, Nicole and theatrical crisis’ Nicholas Hammond The querelle du théâtre during the seventeenth century is a subject that has received sustained critical attention.1 My starting point will be one small corner of the ongoing debate, namely the response by Jean Racine to Pierre Nicole’s condemnation of the theatre and the subsequent reaction of two supporters of Port-Royal. ‘Empoisonneurs publics’: dangerous dramatists In the barbed debate between Nicole and Jean Desmarets de Saint- Sorlin, Nicole turned his sights upon Desmarets’s previous work as a dramatist. Retitling his series of letters (letters 11-18) Les Visionnaires, the Port-Royal moralist chose deliberately to evoke Desmarets’s most notable comedy, Les Visionnaires, first performed in 1637 but restaged at regular intervals in 1665-6.2 In the most colourful passage from Letter XI, Nicole manages to tar all dramatists and novelists with the same brush of corruption and danger: Un faiseur de Romans et un poète de théâtre est un empoisonneur public, non des corps, mais des âmes des fidèles, qui se doit croire coupable d’une infinité d’homicides spirituels, ou qu’il a causés en effet, ou qu’il a pu causer par ses écrits pernicieux. Plus il a eu soin de couvrir d’un voile d’honnêteté les passions criminelles qu’il y décrit, plus il les a rendues dangereuses, et capables de surprendre et de corrompre les âmes simples et innocentes. Jones, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in late seventeenth-century France and its connections to the absolutist monarchy of Louis XIV and the shifting educational ideals of the period. Focusing on the detailed implementation of the edict in Paris, it discusses the importance of the development of a new bureaucratic structure that allowed Louis XIV to remain relatively involved in the details of implementation, while entrusting the daily operations to individuals loyal to the crown. Placing the Revocation in the context of administrative expansion, growing central control, and idealized Christian kingship, Louis XIV’s decision to end toleration of Protestantism in France becomes clearer. It also argues that education and social reform were central in the conception and execution of this edict, and that the Revocation was part of a moment in which conversion through education appeared possible. In combining religious conversion and education in an effort to form Protestants into French Catholics, Louis XIV built upon an absolutist vision of education and connected his efforts to a flourishing debate. -

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA HOBART JUNE 1969 v PREFACE The intention of this present study is to examine Pierre Bayle in his context as an historian rather than a philosopher. The purpose of the thesis will be to analyse the influence exerted upon his idea of history by the arguments which he advanced in defence of toleration in the Dictionnaire historique et critique. I shall attempt to show that while his idea of history remained essentially seventeenth century in character, the demands of his defence of toleration led him to make certain departures from the traditional seventeenth century concept of history, and that in doing so he reached conclusions which represented the begin- nings of a dramatic metamorphosis in French historical thought. The fact that until recently Bayle has been viewed primarily as a philosopher has tended to overshadow his abilities as an historian. The title of "le philosophe de Rotterdam" which has been bestowed upon him seems to ignore the fact that while at the "Ecole Illustre" he held the post of "professeur en philosophie et en histoire".
