GEPHYRA 14, 2017, 213-239 Dionysiac and Pyrrhic Roots and Survivals in the Zeybek Dance, Music, Costume and Rituals of Aegean Turkey Recep MERİÇ In Memory of my Teacher in Epigraphy and the History of Asia Minor Reinhold Merkelbach Zeybek is a particular name in Aegean Turkey for both a type of dance music and a group of com- panions performing it wearing a particular decorative costume and with a typical headdress (Fig. 1). The term Zeybek also designates a man who is brave, a tough and courageous man. Zeybeks are gen- erally considered to be irregular military gangs or bands with a hierarchic order. A Zeybek band has a leader called efe; the inexperienced young men were called kızans. The term efe is presumably the survivor of the Greek word ephebos. Usually Zeybek is preceded by a word which points to a special type of this dance or the place, where it is performed, e.g. Aydın Zeybeği, Abdal Zeybeği. Both the appellation and the dance itself are also known in Greece, where they were called Zeibekiko and Abdaliko. They were brought to Athens after 1922 by Anatolian Greek refugees1. Below I would like to explain and attempt to show, whether the Zeybek dances in the Aegean provinces of western Turkey have any possible links with Dionysiac and Pyrrhic dances, which were very popular in ancient Anatolia2. Social status and origin of Zeybek Recently E. Uyanık3 and A. Sacred Kingship: Cases from Polynesia Henri J. M. Claessen Leiden University ABSTRACT This article aims at a description and analysis of sacred kingship in Poly- nesia. To this aim two cases – or rather island cultures – are compared. The first one is the island of Tahiti, where several complex polities were found. The most important of which were Papara, Te Porionuu, and Tautira. Their type of rulership was identical, so they will be discussed as one. In these kingdoms a great role was played by the god Oro, whose image and the belonging feather girdles were competed fiercely. The oth- er case is found on the Tonga Islands, far to the west. Here the sacred Tui Tonga ruled, who was allegedly a son of the god Tangaloa and a woman from Tonga. Because of this descent he was highly sacred. In the course of time a new powerful line, the Tui Haa Takalaua developed, and the Tui Tonga lost his political power. In his turn the Takalaua family was over- ruled by the Tui Kanokupolu. The tensions between the three lines led to a fierce civil war, in which the Kanokupolu line was victorious. The king from this line was, however, not sacred, being a Christian. 1. INTRODUCTION Polynesia comprises the islands situated in the Pacific Ocean within the triangle formed by the Hawaiian Islands, Easter Island and New Zealand. The islanders share a common Polynesian culture. This cultural unity was established already in the eighteenth century, by James Cook, who ob- served during his visit of Easter Island in 1774: In Colour, Features, and Languages they [the Easter Islanders] bear such an affinity to the People of the more Western isles that no one will doubt that they have the same Origin (Cook 1969 [1775]: 279, 354–355). -

Captain Cook's Voyages

The collection also contains prints from a number of different publications relating to Cook’s voyages. Compiled by Prints and Drawings Department 2008 Joly Collection – Captain Cook’s Voyages Introduction This list details the plates showing the Voyages of Captain Cook, which form part of the Joly Collection held by the Department of Prints and Drawings. The collection contains prints from a number of different publications relating to Cook’s voyages. The plates have been divided by the volume they relate to, and then arranged, where possible, in the order they are found in the printed work. The plates in this collection cover the three voyages of Captain Cook; 1768-71, 1772-5 and 1776-9. On each voyage Cook was accompanied by a different artist, and it is on their drawings that the plates are based. On the first voyage Captain Cook was accompanied by Sydney Parkinson, who died shortly before the end of the voyage. William Hodges replaced Parkinson on the second voyage and the third voyage was covered by John Webber. Sydney Parkinson’s Illustrations, 1773 These plates come from A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas, in his Majesty’s Ship, the Endeavour faithfully transcribed from the papers of the late Sydney Parkinson published in London in 1773. It covers the first voyage of Captain Cook, the set is complete except for Plate XXV Map of the Coast of New Zealand discovered in the Years 1769 and 1770 . -

Europe Since Antiquity THE CLASSICAL PERIOD Greece The scattered elements which must be gathered from all places and periods and laboriously formed into a coherent picture are found united in European antiquity in one magnificent organism. The dance customs of remote ancestors, commonly relegated by mature cultures to a dark hinterland, are here preserved in pristine strength with the same love and protective zeal as among primitive peoples, and all those which later millenniums have begotten and brought forth flourish freely side by side with them. The progression of dance forms has crystallized into a coexistence. We find the same people circling round the sacred objects in meditation as did their earliest ancestors, imitating the ways and actions of animals, losing themselves and be coming possessed in the mask, and obtaining the power of spirits and the attributes of gods through the frenzied ecstasy of the dance. The same people re-experience in dream transports the fate of their ancestors and expand it into popular drama, into world drama—with the recogni tion of its relation to society in the round dance and with the stamp of individualism in the solo dance, with meek submission and with genial wisdom, solemn and grotesque, in earnest and in jest, in a boundless survey of everything human and superhuman. The choral dance takes first place. Homer’s accounts of the heroic age describe the merry choral dance of the young men, alone or together with the maidens, at marriages, at vintage, or simply to give vent to their youthful exuberance—choreia, the Greeks think, must come from chara, “joy.” “Also did the glorious lame god devise a dancing-place like unto that which once in wide Knossos Daidalos wrought for Ariadne of the lovely tresses. -

Chapter 4 A Reconsideration of the Role of Polynesian Women in Early Encounters with Europeans: Supplement to Marshall Sahlins’ Voyage around the Islands of History Serge Tcherkézoff Europeans have been losing their way in the Pacific from the beginning when early explorers made up for navigational errors by claiming inhabited islands as new discoveries. Never mind that the islanders had simultaneously discovered the explorers, no doubt with a fair bit of despair and surprise, but since it took years for islanders to learn the tiny scratches that the visitors called writing, the European claims had a head start in the history books. (Marchand 1961, 253) Ethnohistorical work on first and subsequent early encounters between Polynesians and Europeans remained focused on particular archipelagoes, which has meant that comparative hypotheses spanning the entire Polynesian region have not emerged. Moreover, it has been conducted mainly in eastern Polynesia (including Aotearoa), thus leaving aside the western part of the region.1 In this chapter I examine early encounters in Samoa, from western Polynesia, and also reconsider the Tahitian case, from eastern Polynesia, thus building a comparison of the nature of these early encounters across the region. The focus of the chapter is the apparent sexual offers that women made to the newcomers. If we go back to a number of journals written during the early voyages which have still not been studied in as much detail as they deserve, namely La Pérouse's journal and, for Bougainville's expedition, those of Nassau and Fesche,2 we can see that a crucial aspect of these apparent sexual offers ± 113 Oceanic Encounters the ªgirls' very youngº age and their ªweepingº ± has been overlooked. -

Re-Membering Quirós, Bougainville and Cook in Vanuatu
Chapter 3 The Sediment of Voyages: Re-membering Quirós, Bougainville and Cook in Vanuatu Margaret Jolly Introduction: An Archipelago of Names This chapter juxtaposes the voyages of Quirós in 1606 and those eighteenth-century explorations of Bougainville and Cook in the archipelago we now call Vanuatu.1 In an early and influential work Johannes Fabian (1983) suggested that, during the period which separates these voyages, European constructions of the ªotherº underwent a profound transformation. How far do the materials of these voyages support such a view? Here I consider the traces of these journeys through the lens of this vaunted transformation and in relation to local sedimentations (and vaporisations) of memory. Vanuatu is the name of this archipelago of islands declared at independence in 1980 ± vanua ªlandº and tu ªto stand up, endure; be independentº (see figure 3.1). Both words are drawn from one of the 110 vernacular languages still spoken in the group. But, alongside this indigenous name, there are many foreign place names, the perduring traces of the movement of early European voyagers: Espiritu Santo ± the contraction of Terra Austrialia del Espiritu Santo, the name given by Quirós in 1606;2 Pentecost ± the Anglicisation of Île de Pentecôte, conferred by Bougainville, who sighted this island on Whitsunday, 22 May 1768; Malakula, Erromango and Tanna ± the contemporary spellings of the Mallicollo, Erromanga and Tanna conferred by Cook who named the archipelago the New Hebrides in 1774, a name which, for foreigners at least, lasted from that date till 1980.3 Fortunately, some of these foreign names proved more ephemeral: the island we now know as Ambae, Bougainville called Île des Lepreux (Isle of Lepers), apparently because he mistook the pandemic skin conditions of tinea imbricata or leucodermia for signs of leprosy. -

The history of the collection is described, including the increasing involvement of the Niue community since the 1980s, key items are highlighted, and collecting possibilities for the future are considered.
