The subcommittee met at 10 a.m., pursuant to call, in room AE-1, the Capitol Building, Hon. H. Paul Douglas (chairman of the sub- committee) presiding. Present: Senator Douglas. The subcommittee will come to order. Today we resume our hearings on the subject of discriminatory ocean freight rates and the balance of payments. Last year, the Joint Economic Committee set forth in a report ' eight specific findings on the subject of discrimination in ocean shipping and recommended steps to be taken by the executive branch to counteract the discriminatory practices. In essence, we found that U.S. exporters are forced to pay con- siderably more for shipping to Europe and Japan than do Europeans or Japanese in shipping to the United States. Moreover, it is a dis- parity that according to our findings is warranted neither by volume, value, nor any other economic factor. Similarly, it costs more per ton-mile for U.S. exporters to ship to the new and growing markets of the world, such as South Africa and India, than it costs our lead- ing competitors in Europe and Japan to ship comparable competitive products from their ports to these markets, even where distances are greater. Earlier this year, we focused attention on one element in this gen- eral pattern of discrimination; namely, the rates paid by the U.S. Government under the cargo preference laws. Government and indus- try witnesses were examined on this subject and, from information ad- duced, it appears that in some cases the United States is paying very high freight charges for the shipment of Government-sponsored car- goes. It is equally apparent, moreover that the rates on Government cargoes exert inflationary pressures on the general outbound rate struc- ture to the detriment of our exports and, inasmuch as U.S.-flag ship- ' Printed as S. Rept. 1; 89th Cong., 1st sess. 351 352 DISCRIMINATORY OCEAN FREIGHT RATES ping space is taken up for the most part with Government cargoes, our commercial cargo largely is in the hands of foreign-flag steamship lines. We also heard last month 2 from a new steamship operator who testified that, through the adoption of the most modern and economi- cal methods of freight handling, he was able to offer the Defense Department a reduction of 50 percent in the shipping rate on house- hold effects, and substantial reductions in the rates on general cargo, with the result that members of the steamship conference reduced their rates, at least temporarily. Because he underbid established rates, the witness testified that he has been subjected to threats, pressure, and harassment. In the course of your testimony, Admiral, this sub- committee will be very much interested in your views on this infor- mation and the responses made by Mr. Lyle Bull of the American Steamship Traffic Executive Committee. A tentative conclusion pointed up by our inquiry to date is that there is a considerable need for coordination and modernization of our cargo preference laws requiring, among other things, reorganiza- tion of the present administrative

    Hull History Centre: Material relating to the Ellerman Wilson Line and company U DX368 Material relating to the c.1928-1989 Ellerman Wilson Line and company Historical Background: The firm of Thomas Wilson Sons & Co. (TWSC), later Ellerman's Wilson Line (EWL), was known for most of its life and now remembered as the Wilson Line. The activities of this single company helped to make Hull Britain's third largest port by the beginning of the twentieth century. In March 1904 TWSC owned some 99 vessels, most of which had been built by the local firm of Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited, which had itself been bought by TWSC shortly before. Thomas Wilson, the founder of the firm, was born in Hull on 12 February 1792. He went to sea as a boy but then became a clerk with Whitaker, Wilkinson & Co., importers of Swedish iron ore, later becoming their commercial traveller in the Sheffield area. On 1 September 1814 he married Susannah John West and they eventually had 15 children. The story goes that, with a growing family, he asked his employers for a rise, was refused, and in 1820 chose to set up in business for himself, relying on various partners for the provision of capital. The first of these in 1822 was John Beckington, a merchant and iron importer from Newcastle. The firm of Beckington, Wilson & Co. started as ore importers based at Beckington's house at 14 Salthouse Lane, Hull. In 1825 two new partners joined: Thomas Hudson, another Newcastle merchant, and John Hudson, a druggist, of Hull.

Social Integration at a Public Park Basketball Court by Michael Francis DeLand Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Jack Katz, Chair This dissertation examines the ongoing formation of a public park as a particular type of public place. Based on four years of in-depth participant observation and historical and archival research I show how a pickup basketball scene has come to thrive at Ocean View Park (OVP) in Santa Monica California. I treat pickup basketball as a case of public place integration which pulls men out of diverse biographical trajectories into regular, intense, and emotional interactions with one another. Many of the men who regularly play at Ocean View Park hold the park in common, if very little else in their lives. Empirical chapters examine the contingencies of the park’s historical formation and the basketball scene’s contemporary continuation. Through comparative historical research I show how Ocean View Park was created as a “hidden gem” within its local urban ecology. Then I show that the intimate character of the park affords a loose network of men the opportunity to sustain regular and informal basketball games. Without the structure of formal organization men arrive at OVP explicitly to build and populate a vibrant gaming context with a diverse array of ii others.

It is established that though tour operators are believed to have an awareness and tourists are believed to have an interest in sustainability, the way in which the tour operators portray these ideas across to the tourists is missing from the literature. As a result, the following study investigates tourist perception and their awareness of sustainability as well as how tour operators are communicating their sustainability methods to their target market. The study aim was to investigate tourist perception of the All-Inclusive holiday and sustainability and their accessibility to information on sustainability through UK tour operators. CHUNG* INTRODUCTION Chapter 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code became law in October 2005. It governs transnational bankruptcies and is designed to propel bankruptcy law into the new age of global economic activity conducted by multinational companies. According to Chapter 15’s supporters, modern day corporations do business throughout the world, and debtors and creditors need a structure that can provide greater certainty and predictability in the event of bankruptcy by a multinational debtor. At this time, the scope and contours of the new law are still untested and unknown. Its first few years will likely generate a struggle between those who have a more traditional view of bankruptcy law and those whose goal is to internationalize it, with the two sides seeking to narrow or expand the meaning and application of Chapter 15. This struggle will be a continuation of the debate between the two competing and polar models of transnational bankruptcy law—territorialism and universalism. Chapter 15’s proponents designed it with a view to promote universalism. Universalism involves one court in one country taking control of a multinational bankruptcy and applying its domestic bankruptcy law to all of the debtor’s assets and creditors worldwide.     09/06/2021 Bristol Airport - Wikipedia Coordinates: 51°22′58″N 002°43′09″W Bristol Airport Bristol Airport (IATA: BRS, ICAO: EGGD), at Lulsgate Bottom, on the northern slopes of the Mendip Hills, in North Bristol Airport Somerset, is the commercial airport serving the city of Bristol, England, and the surrounding area. It is 7 nautical miles (13 km; 8.1 mi) southwest of Bristol city centre.[2] Built on the site of a former RAF airfield, it opened in 1957 as Bristol (Lulsgate) Airport,[4] replacing Bristol (Whitchurch) Airport as Bristol's municipal airport. From 1997 to 2010, it was known as Bristol International Airport.[5] In 1997, a majority shareholding in the airport was sold to FirstGroup, and then in 2001 the airport was sold to a joint venture of Macquarie Bank and others. In September 2014, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan bought out Macquarie to become the sole owner. In 2019, it was ranked the eighth busiest airport (overtaking Glasgow International Airport from the previous year) in the IATA: BRS · ICAO: EGGD United Kingdom, handling over 8.9 million passengers, a 3% Summary [6] increase compared with 2018.
