CFP - LAWYERS and the LEGAL SYSTEM in POPULAR CULTURE (SWPACA Conference, Feb H-Announce CFP - LAWYERS AND THE LEGAL SYSTEM IN POPULAR CULTURE (SWPACA Conference, Feb. 2022) Announcement published by K. Dale Guffey on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 Type: Call for Papers Date: October 31, 2021 Location: New Mexico, United States Subject Fields: Popular Culture Studies, Law and Legal History, Teaching and Learning, Film and Film History LAWYERS AND THE LEGAL SYSTEM IN POPULAR CULTURE The United States prides itself on being a country based on the rule of law, and often the courtroom is seen as the “great leveler” of socio-economic classes in America. Thus, Lady Justice is often depicted as being blindfolded while carrying both scales and a sword. In popular culture, lawyers run the spectrum, shown sometimes as high priests who adhere to the most rigid standards of truth seeking and ethical behavior (Atticus Finch, Jack McCoy) and sometimes shown as all-too-willing to be on the wrong side of the law (Tom Hagen, Saul Goodman). Suggested topics include, but are certainly not limited to: 1. Actual people in the legal profession who have been fictionalized, such as Daniel Webster, Clarence Darrow (as Henry Drummond in Inherit the Wind), or Erin Brockovich 1. Defending unpopular clients, such as the war criminals in Judgment at Nuremberg 1. Fictional women in the legal profession, such as Amanda Bonner in Adam’s Rib, the title character in Ally McBeal, Patty Hewes in Damages, or Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder 1. Films centering on the law, such as 12 Angry Men, Devil’s Advocate, or Philadelphia Citation: K. Dale Guffey. CFP - LAWYERS AND THE LEGAL SYSTEM IN POPULAR CULTURE (SWPACA Conference, Feb. 2022). Legal ethics as depicted - rightly or wrongly - in popular culture 1. Particular fictional lawyers, such as Shakespeare’s Portia or Perry Mason 1. The law as depicted in animated shows through characters such as Lionel Hutz (The Simpsons) or Harvey Birdman 1. The legal profession as a force of evil, such as Wolfram & Hart on Angel 1. The stereotype of the “simple country lawyer” such as Ben Matlock or Hyper-Chicken (Futurama). This topic could also easily include real-life figures such as Cicero, Abraham Lincoln, Sam Ervin, or Gerry Spence 1. The tension between reality television with paid participants and wildly popular courtroom shows involving small claims litigants 1. Using popular culture examples of the law and lawyers in the classroom to teach particular concepts. • The Rise of the Anti-Hero: Pushing Network Boundaries in the Contemporary U.S
The Rise of The Anti-Hero: Pushing Network Boundaries in The Contemporary U.S. Television YİĞİT TOKGÖZ Submitted to the Graduate School of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in CINEMA AND TELEVISION KADIR HAS UNIVERSITY June, 2016 I II ABSTRACT THE RISE OF THE ANTI-HERO: PUSHING NETWORK BOUNDARIES IN THE CONTEMPORARY U.S. TELEVISION Yiğit Tokgöz Master of Arts in Cinema and Television Advisor: Dr. Elif Akçalı June, 2016 The proliferation of networks using narrowcasting for their original drama serials in the United States proved that protagonist types different from conventional heroes can appeal to their target audiences. While this success of anti-hero narratives in television serials starting from late 1990s raises the question of “quality television”, developing audience measurement models of networks make alternative narratives based on anti-heroes become widespread on the U.S. television industry. This thesis examines the development of the anti-hero on the U.S. television by focusing on the protagonists of pay-cable serials The Sopranos (1999-2007) and Dexter (2006-2013), basic cable serials The Shield (2002-2008) and Mad Men (2007-2015), and video-on-demand serials House of Cards (2013- ) and Hand of God (2014- ). In brief, this thesis argues that the use of anti-hero narratives in television is directly related to the narrowcasting strategy of networks and their target audience groups, shaping a template for growing networks and newly formed distribution services to enhance the brand of their corporations. In return, the anti-hero narratives push the boundaries of conventional hero in television with the protagonists becoming morally less tolerable and more complex, introducing diversity to television serials and paving the way even for mainstream broadcast networks to develop serials based on such protagonists.

  • Preemptive Narratives in Recent Television Series Par Toni Pape

  • ETC Marketing Metadata 1.0
ETC Marketing Metadata 1.0 Introduction The explosion of online digital content has heightened the need for complete and accurate marketing metadata to assist consumers in search and discovery of movies and television. In addition, the increase in online distributors with widely different content submission requirements makes the delivery of accurate metadata a time-consuming and difficult process for content owners. For this reason, the Entertainment Technology Center organized the Metadata Working Group to create best-practices for the creation and distribution of marketing metadata. This working group is made up of metadata experts from the major Hollywood Studios, film service, and technology companies. Historically, each digital service provider has created its own metadata specification and required that content providers conform their product information to that format. Unfortunately, the lack of standards underpinning those metadata elements -- their names and definition, and the terms used to populate them -- has confounded efforts to streamline the digital distribution, and ultimately the search and discovery, of content. Some forward-looking groups have sought to simplify the process; MovieLabs and the Entertainment Merchant's Association (EMA), for example, recently released Version 1.0 of the EMA Metadata specification, covering information delivered from publishers to retailers (http://www.entmerch.org/ema_metadata_.html). What is typically missing from the various public metadata documents/specifications are details on how content providers should actually construct metadata. This document begins to scratch the surface on that topic -- tackling first and foremost, descriptive metadata (much of what the EMA specification calls "Basic Metadata"). Our goal in writing this document was to provide a set of best practices, based on the combined wisdom of the metadata experts who produce and distribute digital media for the leading Hollywood studios.

"The Simpsons" and the Law: Revealing Truth and Justice to the Masses By Kevin K. Ho* I. INTRODUCTION In Law, Lawyers, and Popular Culture, Lawrence Friedman argues that legal culture and popular culture share a symbiotic relationship, with popular culture transmitting distorted information about the law to a generally ignorant public.' Friedman notes that relatively few members of the general public read casebooks, statutes, or administrative rules, unless they themselves need access to the legal system. 2 He theorizes that, as legal culture becomes more Byzantine and removed from the mainstream, popular culture will remain the main source of legal information for the general public. Unfortunately, it appears likely that members of the public will be even more reluctant to access the legal system after they have been exposed to the negative depictions of both the law and the legal actors often seen in the contemporary media. Furthermore, when this reluctance is considered in light of the fact that entertainment value is paramount in popular media, the prospects for an actual increase in the * J.D.
