A local breeder (Jeri Newman) was asked to look at the “strange” kitten which exhibited a slight curl on the coat. Jeri, who had an interest in feline genetics adopted the kitten and later bred the kitten to one of her cattery Persians, Photo Finish of Deekay. On July 4th, 1988 the year-old “kitten” by then named Miss DePesto of NoFace delivered 6 kittens. Surprisingly, 3 of the 6 kittens had a curly coat and the other 3 were straight-hair kittens. Thus the beginning of a Breed. This 50% ratio of curly offspring is exactly what would be expected from a dominant gene for curl. This created even more interest in exploring the development of a new breed based on the curly-coat trait. Jeri selected one of her own family names, “Selkirk”; with the same theme as the Cornish and Devon Rex regional names, the Selkirk mountains and a stream by the same name were nearby.

Case 1 is a mixed Scottish Fold and Munchkin cat. Extremities of this cat resembled the Munchkin cat, while the ear pinna were folded forward like the Scottish Fold cat. Case 2 is a mixed Scottish Fold and American Curl cat. The ear pinna were curled caudally like the American Curl. Severe exostosis in the hind leg was observed in radiographs taken around one year of age in both cats.     Preventing Fading Kitten Syndrome in Hairless Peterbald Cats Mark Kantrowitz 1 Abstract Newborn hairless Peterbald kittens have a very high mortality rate, rarely surviving to one month of age. Since the early days of the breed, breeders have not attempted to breed born-hairless sires and dams together because all of the kittens will be hairless, with few surviving to adulthood. Even in litters from heterozygous parents, it is unusual for more than one hairless kitten to survive. Several potential causes of fading kitten syndrome in Peterbald cats are identified. A new 7-step protocol has been developed to address all of the potential causes of fading kitten syndrome. This protocol has been used successfully to breed a hairless sire, CelestialBlue Eureka, with a hairless dam, CelestialBlue Mimsy. All four hairless kittens in this litter have survived to four months of age, and there is every expectation that they will reach adulthood and live normal lifespans. This is the first time a litter of born-hairless Peterbald kittens has achieved a 0% mortality rate since the origin of the Peterbald breed.
