Shine On for generations to come!! TOTAL SUPPORT $28,353 Deacon Dominic’s Dialogue Recently I ’ve been interested in the history of the ministry of deacons in the Church. Deacons have been a part of the clergy since the days of the Apostles (see Acts 6), but their role in Church history has evolved over the ages. There have been many deacons who were great preachers, authors, and even martyrs. One of the most well -known dea- cons in history is St. Lawrence, who lived from 225-258. St. Lawrence was one of the deacons assisting the Bishop of Rome (also called the Pope), Pope Sixtus II. One of Dea- con Lawrence ’s jobs was to distribute money and goods to the poor of Rome. In 258, the Roman Emper- or Valerian began a persecution of the Church in which all bishops, priests, and deacons were to be put to death. Pope Sixtus II was captured while celebrating Mass and put to death. The authorities told Law- rence to turn over all the Church ’s riches, or he would be put to death too. Lawrence agreed to do this, but with a twist! Lawrence spent the next three days distributing the Church ’s money to the poor, and on the third day he gathered the poor and the crippled in front of the authorities. He said that the poor are the true treasures of the Church, worth more than any amount of money! You can guess what happened to Deacon Lawrence next! Lawrence was martyred and is one of the patron saints of deacons because of his example of generous service and boldness in defending the dignity of the poor. May he be an example for all of us to be both servants and brave defenders of our brothers and sisters. —Deacon Dominic Vahling The Most Holy Trinity 3 St. Paul School Queen of Hearts Highland Knights of Columbus Trash bags are still available for ticket sales Tuesday and Wednesday purchase in the Parish Office evenings 5 p.m. -8 p.m., and and School Office.
