Presentments m.69. The Inhabitants of , 1 March 1661, have forcibly and unlawfully ploughed up and spoiled the common highway leading from Ewell to Reigate, to the grave nuisance of the king’s liege people riding along the said highway, in evil example and against the peace. m.90. Presentments m.104. The lane called Tollworth Lane leading from Ewell to Kingston has been so out of repair in the parish of Longe Ditton ever since 1 October 1661 that the king’s liege people cannot pass without great danger, to their grave nuisance. The Inhabitants of Longe Ditton ought to repair the same whenever necessary. Exon’. m.121. Before Christopher Buckle Esq., JP, 13 August 1662, John Dickeson of Ewell in £20 to appear to answer and not to depart and to abide, being charged by William Warner of Dorking, blacksmith, for ‘the felonious stealing’ of two hammers out of Warner’s ‘shop’. A gate called Willmore Hatch at Epsom, on the highway from Headley to Kingston ought to be repaired by the tenant of certain lands lying near; and Robert Mayuenel, late of Epsom, gentleman, being the tenant of those lands, ever since 1 September has allowed the gate to be out of repair.

XXIV Sessions at Croydon, 15 January 1667

Presentments m.42. Thomas Bickford, James Burd, labourers, and Henry Henton, all of Ewell, on 1 October made assault and affray at Banstead upon John Carver, gentleman. XXV Sessions at Reigate, 16 April 1667

Presentments m.37. Thomas Sands, late of Ewell, knight, on 1 March forcibly diverted, or caused to be diverted, a watercourse flowing by the highway from Ewell to Kingston, from the old channel to his own land. m.75. From time immemorial here has been a certain paling against a well near the highway in the common waste in Ebbsham; it has been out of repair on and since 10 March. The Inhabitants of Ebbsham should repair the same as necessary. Cogn’ et fin’ 12d.

Recognisances m.170. Before Richard Evelyn, esquire, JP, 28 January, William Pennifold of Ewell, husbandman, £20 to answer the complaint of George Palmer, underkeeper of his Majestie’s Park of Nonsuch, of stealing ‘wood, pales, quicksetts, etc’. Sureties: Peter Basemore, baker, and William Bayes, carpenter, both of Ewell. Memoranda m.21. Memorandum that on 25 August last, Francis Ewell of Ebsham, came before Christopher Buckle and Richard Evelyn, esquires, JPs, at Ebsham; and it appeared that the said Ewell, being then 16 years old and more, had on that date allowed — Knowles, Thomas Bell, late of Allhallowes in London, merchant, Benjamin Cole, late of Hammersmith, merchant, John Crosse, late of Great St. Ellens, merchant, Nicholas Holloway, late of Shoreditch, John Vipers, late of St. Mary Whitechappell, Humfrey Jones, late of St. Giles without Cripplegate, Thomas Egg, late of Bishopsgate, and John Penton, late of —, with other (unknown) malefactors and disturbers of the peace, to the number of twenty besides his own family, to congregate at his house for the exercise of religion in a form other than that prescribed for the English Church etc: and the above persons were each and all convicted and fined 5s. by the said Justices. XXIX Sessions at Reigate, 31 March, 1668

Presentments m.75. The common lane called Tollworth Lane, being a common highway in the hamlet of Tollworth in the parish of Long Ditton, and leading from Ewell to Kingston, since 1 February, until the taking of this inquisition in Long Ditton, has been out of repair for a length of 40 rods. Sara wife of Thomas Grove, late of Ebsham, yeoman, 16 June, knowing Richard Evelyn, esquire, to be a Justice of the Peace and maliciously intending to bring contempt and ignominy upon him, publicly declared that: ‘hee cheates the poore paupers’ of the said parish, in grave shame and contempt of the said Richard Evelyn. Mary wife of Henry Read, late of Ebsham, yeoman, 16 June, knowing Richard Evelyn, esquire, to be a Justice of the Peace, and maliciously intending to bring contempt and ignominy upon him, and complaining of an injustice done to her by the said Richard Evelyn and being advised by some unknown person to go before another Justice, then and there declared and exclaimed publicly:.‘What justice can I expect of a Justice when this is a Justice who cheates the poore pauperes’ of the said parish, in great contempt and shame of the said Richard Evelyn. William King late of Ebbsham, innholder, 21 September, and before and since has kept a disorderly houses, allowing the servants of his neighbours, and others, to remain drinking, etc. at his house at illegal hours. Submiss’ et fin’ 20s. m.60. A certain common highway called Tollworth Lane, in Longditton, leading from Ewell to Kingston, has been out of repair etc. since 1 September, for a length of 2 rods. Jury Panels m.9. Edward Blundell, Thomas Boorne, John Cuddinton, Nicholas Elliot or Elliott, John Jones or Joanes, George Lane or Laine, John Mitchell, Charles Parkhurst, and John Stevens or Steevens, all said to be of Ewell, empanelled among the jurors for the Hundreds of Copthorne and Effingham. (However, Elliot, Jones, Mitchell, Parkhurst and Stevens are known from other sources as Epsom men, so there may have been an error in the listing). John Lewes of Epsom was excused.

Presentments m.102. From time immemorial and within the last six years, there has been a common highway in Ebbesham called Ebbesham Common, leading from Stanford Pond there to the Well on Ebbesham Common. Edward Bellgrove of Ebbesham, farmer, within the last six years, has encroached on and inclosed with hedges, gates, etc. for his own gain, a certain part of this highway, 100 x 10 rods, so that since 1 February last it has remained very muddy, foundered and out of repair; and it should be repaired by the said Edward.
