The Inhabitants of Ewell, 1 March 1661, have forcibly and unlawfully ploughed up and spoiled the common highway leading from Ewell to Reigate, to the grave nuisance of the king’s liege people riding along the said highway, in evil example and against the peace. m.90. The lane called Tollworth Lane leading from Ewell to Kingston has been so out of repair in the parish of Longe Ditton ever since 1 October 1661 that the king’s liege people cannot pass without great danger, to their grave nuisance. The Inhabitants of Longe Ditton ought to repair the same whenever necessary. Exon’. m.121. Before Christopher Buckle Esq., JP, 13 August 1662, John Dickeson of Ewell in £20 to appear to answer and not to depart and to abide, being charged by William Warner of Dorking, blacksmith, for ‘the felonious stealing’ of two hammers out of Warner’s ‘shop’. Thomas Mason, John Hall, John Lucas, all late of Ewell, labourers, pretending to be ‘servantes and deputies of the Provost Marshall of Lord Mordaunt’ and to have authority from the Marshall to receive money from all victuallers in Surrey, took 6s 8d from divers victuallers in Ewell, under colour of this pretence. Before Nicholas Carew, knight, JP, 26 August, at Beddington, John Cobb of Ewell, husbandman, £20 to answer ‘for that the said John Cobb is accused by Mary Brigland to have unlawfully gotten her with Child’. Sureties: Allen Brigland, cordwainer, and John Brigland, labourer, both of Ewell. m.43. Oliver Brignell, late of Ewell, victualler, ever since 1 July has kept an alehouse in this parishe and sold beer and ale ever since the date shown without a Justice’s licence. XXIII Sessions at Reigate, 2 October 1666 Jury Panels m.9. William Bird, John Lewes, William Parkhurst, Nicholas Spurling and William Woodman, all of Epsom, empanelled among the jurors for the hundreds of Copthorne and Effingham. Presentments m.47. A gate called Willmore Hatch at Epsom, on the highway from Headley to Kingston ought to be repaired by the tenant of certain lands lying near; and Robert Mayuenel, late of Epsom, gentleman, being the tenant of those lands, ever since 1 September has allowed the gate to be out of repair. XXIV Sessions at Croydon, 15 January 1667 Presentments m.42. Thomas Bickford, James Burd, labourers, and Henry Henton, all of Ewell, on 1 October made assault and affray at Banstead upon John Carver, gentleman. All: Cogn’ et fin’ 2s 6d. m.80. Elizabeth Amis and John Lewis, both late of Epsom, victuallers, on 1 January kept disorderly houses there.
