Arrow: Why Is Oliver Not Suspicious of Chase’ Arrow: Why Is Oliver Not Suspicious Of Chase's Easy Surrender? Author : This has arguably been one of the better seasons of the CW's hit show, Arrow. While many were disappointed in a lackluster season four, season five has gone back to the darker, grittier tone that fans love. As a fan of all the Arrowverse shows, I have found myself looking forward to Wednesday nights more than Tuesdays when The Flash airs. A big reason why has to do with this season's big bad. His name is Prometheus. Or as some like to call him, the throwing star killer. Oh wait, we even know his "real" name. But the name he goes by the most nowadays is Adrian Chase. Chase is one of the best psychological baddies I have ever witnessed on television. Everything he does is for a reason. And that reason usually has something to do with getting inside of Oliver Queen's head. He is also almost always a step ahead of Team Arrow, helping with his mind games. As a result, Oliver has been on the brink of giving up on a handful of occasions. So last week, something just felt a bit off. At the end of the episode, Oliver began to play some mind games of his own. He told Chase that his father wanted to disown him. As a result, Chase essentially got to his knees and gave up. He was taken into custody and ended up in an A.R.G.U.S. cell. As a result of their win, Team Arrow was seen celebrating. They were all happy to see Chase behind bars. Their mission was complete! For a few minutes, this whole thing simply did not sit well with me. There was simply no way Chase would just surrender after Oliver mentioned his father wanting to disown him. But then I remembered, we still have two episodes left! That's when the promo played for tomorrow's episode, titled "Missing", played. And then all made sense again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bey_H6IdPQY As you can tell from the promo above, Chase can still do some damage from the inside of a cell. He has friends on the outside who are capable of helping him. Eventually, they will assist in breaking him out no doubt. But not before they deliver another psychological blow to Oliver and his team. It seems like Chase is going to have his team capture members of Team Arrow. This will lead to Oliver confronting Chase inside his cell. All of this is likely a part of Chase's plan. As I mentioned before, he is all about head games. He knows how to position his pieces on the board to account for a move that is about five away. 1 / 2 He is no physical specimen. While is is a skilled fighter, he cannot count on that to take down Oliver. After all, he wants Oliver to suffer as much as possible before he actually kills him. Given this has been Chase's M.O. this entire time, how does Oliver not feel something is off? Oliver of all people is always looking over his shoulder. He is not trusting of anyone, except maybe Diggle. This included Felicity for a very long time. So how is it that he is not questioning Chase's easy laydown? It just feels a little off for the character. Maybe we will open the next episode with Oliver bringing some of these thoughts to light. But as things stand, we are of the assumption that Oliver thinks this is over. Apparently, that is part of Chase's plan too. As it seems that part of his mind games is to have Team Arrow members go missing at the hands of Chase while Oliver is in this state of mind. Only time will tell. How do you feel about Oliver's belief that this whole thing with Chase is over? Does it seem off to you? Tell us what you think in the comments! 2 / 2 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

  • The Signaling Value of Hunted Game
Costly Signaling and Prey Choice: The Signaling Value of Hunted Game by Andrew Phillip Carson Bishop A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved November 2019 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Kimberly Hill, Chair Robert Boyd Benjamin Trumble ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2019 ABSTRACT For most of human history hunting has been the primary economic activity of men. Hunted animals are valued for their food energy and nutrients, however, hunting is associated with a high risk of failure. Additionally, large animals cannot be consumed entirely by the nuclear family, so much of the harvest may be shared to others. This has led some researchers to ask why men hunt large and difficult game. The “costly signaling” and “show-off” hypotheses propose that large prey are hunted because the difficulty of finding and killing them is a reliable costly signal of the phenotypic quality of the hunter. These hypotheses were tested using original interview data from Aché (hunter gatherer; n=52, age range 50-76, 46% female) and Tsimané (horticulturalist; n=40, age range 15-77, 45% female) informants. Ranking tasks and paired comparison tasks were used to determine the association between the costs of killing an animal and its value as a signal of hunter phenotypic quality for attracting mates and allies. Additional tasks compared individual large animals to groups of smaller animals to determine whether assessments of hunters’ phenotypes and preferred status were more impacted by the signal value of the species or by the weight and number of animals killed.

Written in response to The Batpack Wank Fanfic Challenge 2003 in honor of National Masturbation Month. Feedback: It’s ALL about the feedback (and naked Spike)! Don’t make me beg, it’s not pretty. Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters, just borrowing them for awhile. Everything belongs to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, Kuzui Enterprises, Grr Argh, the WB, UPN, Fox, and whomever else they really belong to, although I wouldn’t mind having a Spike of my own. Who would? Written: June 2, 2003 Xander sat at the bar drinking his third beer. Now that he was old enough, he could legally drink his sorrows away. God, life sucked, he thought miserably. He wished... No, wait, wishing was bad. You never knew who might be listening. He carefully looked over his shoulder, and then surveyed the bar, looking for his ex-fiancé—the ex- ex-vengeance demon, patron demoness of women scorned, or some such, one of which she was now, or again—or her ‘justice demon’ friend, Halfrek. He didn’t see either one of them, but still, better safe than sorry.

  • The Cost of Butterfly Kisses
50ftqueenie made a request that really tickled my muse. So, rather than spoil you by telling you what she requested, I just present her story... Spike/Xander (pre-slash) Warnings: A bit of blackmail and manipulation Rating: Teen Episode Spoilers: Once More with Feeling 187,000 words Summary: Xander's been a bad boy, and Spike is about to figure out how to make the most of it. The Cost of Butterfly Kisses by Litgal Part One "Right then, you get all your singing out, then?" Spike asked. He lit a cigarette and looked around the Magic Box. Slayer wasn't around. It was just the sad little puppy-boy behind the counter. "What do you want, Spike?" Xander demanded, bristling with anger. Well, if Spike had to wait around for the slayer, he might as well entertain himself. If he was being honest with himself, he wanted to make a little trouble. If it weren't for the chip, he'd likely go out and gut some bloke and do something creative with the intestines. Days like this made him miss Drusilla. "Just thought I'd check in and see if ya were stupid enough to summon any more demons lately," Spike commented as he leaned against the counter. Xander flinched back from the question, but then, he should. It was bloody stupid. Harris had been around long enough to keep his mitts off magical amulets, and making a wish was even more idiotic than usual. Surprisingly, Xander didn't blow. "Go away, Spike," he said, his voice quiet, even if it was trembling with emotion.

  • Cynthea Masson, Malaspina University-College
Cynthea Masson, Malaspina University-College “What Did You Sing About?”: Acts of Questioning in “Once More, with Feeling” "Am I crazy? Am I dreamin'? Am I marrying a demon?" Where else but on Buffy the Vampire Slayer could these questions not only be posed but sung as "a retro pastiche" (6.7)? Questions abound in "Once More, with Feeling"—the answers, however, are a little less forthcoming, as I will outline in this paper. Commentary on Buffy's musical episode often focuses on the revelations of truth that form the content of the songs.1 Richard Albright aptly synthesizes this view when he states, "We soon realize that each of the characters sings what they secretly feel, so the songs represent the real and the true" (para. 11). Or, as Anne Billson puts it, the characters are "compelled to blurt out their innermost secrets in song" (110). I disagree—in part. That is, the truths or secrets revealed in "Once More, with Feeling" may be a distraction from other truths or secrets that the characters are not yet able to admit aloud, even in song, even to themselves. If, as Rhonda Wilcox notes, the musical device of the episode "works like a soliloquy, in that we can be assured we will hear the interior truth for that character," then another aspect of the soliloquy should be considered (193; my emphasis).2 Anthony J. Gilbert argues that the speaker of a soliloquy "may say what he wants to believe is true, at a conscious level, but which he knows to be false, at an unconscious level" (223).

  • Romance in Dollhouse Lorna Jowett
‘I love him... Is that real?’ Interrogating Romance in Dollhouse Lorna Jowett A Dollhouse Confession (not mine!), website Because of Joss Whedon’s commitment to what he regularly calls feminism in interviews and commentaries, the Whedon creations have consistently interrogated the myth of heterosexual romance. Long-running TV shows like Buffy and Angel offered wide scope for examining romance alongside other aspects of gender and sexuality. The mix of conventions in these earlier shows also lend themselves to negotiating romance from different angles, whether this is about characters growing up and changing their own ideas about romantic and sexual relationships, or what you can ‘get away with’ in a fantasy show about vampires. Firefly featured both a happily married couple and a sex-worker, neither common-place in network TV drama, allowing that shorter-lived series to move away from obvious conventions of romance. And then there’s Dollhouse, where almost all of the characters are either prostitutes or pimps. Melissa Milavec and Sharon Kaye suggest that Buffy ‘owes much of its popularity to making erotic love a dominant theme’ (2003: 174): Dollhouse may owe its lack of popularity to the way it treats much the same theme in a more disturbing fashion. ‘Like every good fairy tale, the story grows more intricate, and more divisive, every decade,’ says a reporter of Dollhouse rumours in ‘The Man on the Street’ (Dollhouse 1.6). His words are equally applicable to the myth of heterosexual romance as tackled by the Whedonverses on TV. The Whedon shows offer a sustained interrogation of gender, but are complicated by the demands of mainstream entertainment.
