4. Aims and Objectives Aims The program is designed to produce graduates with general knowledge and advanced knowledge and skills in mass communication in , , , , advertising and . Graduates are provided ability in critical analysis and relevant social problem solving and able to apply their knowledge into their future career, as well as for the benefits of the society with leadership, ethics, morality and responsibilities for the society. Objectives 1. To produce scholar graduates with both academic knowledge and professional skills. 2. To produce graduates with ability in problem solving and thus contribute those skills to the society. 3. To produce graduates to be a leader of the society with morality, most advanced skills and insightful attitudes. 4. To produce graduates who lead to social development.

3. Elective Courses 24 Credits Students can take any courses offered at Thammasat University, but not taking less than 24 credits. If students take courses outside faculty more than 12 credits, excepts for those who are exchanged to aboard, they can transfer some credits back from the aboard course to Thammasat University course. However, they must take at least one course which will improve their English skills. Elective Courses must not be chosen from General Basic Courses, except courses in foreign languages. This program is not designed to provide students a minor, but in case that students have obtained all the expected credits and met all the requirements for a minor, students can be granted a minor.

17.3 Studying Journalism and Mass Communication as a minor Those who are from other faculties and wish to have Journalism and Mass Communication as their minor, must be enrolled in that minor at least 24 credits. Course Descriptions

JC.201 Law of Mass Communication 3 Credits This subject studies the right and freedom of human in free speech. The subject will cover its philosophy, the government‘s regulations, offences of , law and other relevant law and regulations. Students will also learn about the responsibilities of mass communication, such as journalist ethics and morality. (A 3 Hour Lecture)

JC.2JC.20505 Visual Communication Arts 3 Credits A study of visual communication arts. This subject covers lines, colors, shapes, shadows and other elements of pictures presented in media. This subject focuses on the relationship between the elements of the arts and the context of the message in cultural and suitable ways. (A 2 Hour Lecture and A 3 Hour Workshop)

JC.210 Introduction to Journalism 3 Credits This subject introduces students to journalism. Topics include its definition, boundaries and the revolution of Journalism. The subject emphasizes on newspapers, addressing on its roles, responsibilities, management, types and formats, as well as, arising issues on the ethics of . (A 3 Hour Lecture)

JC.211 Basic News Reporting 3 Credits This subject provides students with an overview of the discipline and an understanding in the role theory plays in basic news reporting. It will address on its definition, disciplines, and basic skills in news reporting, and professional journalist writing, tactics for journalist interviewing and news . Students will pay attention to practice in various style and contexts of journalist writing and develop an understanding in the logical structure and the language of news writing. (A 2 Hour Lecture and A 2 Hour Workshop)

JC.230 Introduction to Broadcasting 3 Credits This subject aims to introduce students to the basics of the radio and television industry and broadcast production, emphasizing on its history, nature, roles and responsibilities. Students will be also provided an opportunity to visit a radio workstation and a television workstation. (A 3 Hour Lecture)

JC.250 Introduction to Advertising and Public Relations 3 Credits This subject studies a fundamental understanding in advertising and public relations. It also examines its definitions, evolutions, objectives, formats and processions. The subject will also address an issue on niches and communicating tools. (A 3 Hour Lecture)

JC.270 Film studies 3 Credits This subject introduces students to a fundamental knowledge in moving images. The subject will cover its nature, its role, its advantages, genres and its communication, emphasizing on screen histories. Students enrolled in the subject shall be skilled in critical thinking and analysis in a cultural context and have a good understanding of social, economic and cultural context, which have some impacts on the movement of moving images. (A 2 Hour Lecture and A 2 Workshop)

JC.300 Communication Theory 3 Credits Prerequisite(s) : JC.200 Introduction to CommunicationCommunication This subject aims to familiarize students with the natures, hypothesis and theory in communication, examining the process of human communication in a behavioral and social context, such as personal communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, organization communication, and mass communication. (A 3 Hour Lecture)

JC.301 Communication and Public Opinion 3 Credits Prerequisite(s) : JC200 Introduction to CommunicatCommunicationion This subject offers student an understanding in communication and public opinion, emphasizing on the principles, causes and evolution of public onion. This subject also studies political, economic and social factors which are influential to the problems in public opinion, the roles of journalists which lead to changes in public opinion, propaganda and psychological behavior. (A 3 Hour Lecture)

JC.302 Introduction to Communication Research 3 Credits Prerequisite(s) : JC300 Communication Theoty This subject aims to introduce students to communication research, emphasizing on various research design in social subject and methods of communication research. Students shall gain an understanding in research mythology and be able to apply their knowledge in their mass communicational career. (A 2 Hour Lecture and A 2 Hour Workshop)

JC.490 Internship 3 Credits In final semester, those students who have obtained all the required credits and have only 15 credits remaining, are required to take an internship at an institution or their choice of company in their interest and their major. Their choice of company must be approved by the faculty and the company in which students intend to take an internship. The duration must be longer than 135 hours or 9 weeks. After having the internship, students must submit a report to the committee in their major or their lecturer. Alternatively, students can be enrolled in JC.491 (Special Projects) instead of taking an internship.

JC.491 Special Project 3 Credits Prerequisite(s) : StudentsStudents‘‘ project must be initiallyinitially approved by the departmdepartment,ent, or lecturer. Students conduct an individual project or attend a special workshop in which they are interested.

JC.492 Cooperative Education in Mass Communication 6 Credits Prerequisite(s) : havinhavingg obtained more than 90 credits.credits. Before the workshop, students must meet the preparing qualification, and have relevant necessary skills, as requested by the faculty. Their choice of contexts and cooperative institution must be relevant to their major and suitable in the current society. Students must attend the workshop in cooperative education under the conditions made by the faculty. For example, if student‘s cooperative education is a big institution , it required to be under cooperation between other institutions / or students attend a special project or conduct an individual project/ or students attend a specialist workshop, but not longer than 480 hours or 16 weeks/ or other agreements made with the faculty. During the workshop, students are to submit their progress and evaluation among students, to lecturers, advisors and the trader or the dealer. After finishing the workshop, students are required to submit a project in any formats, such as a project, or other kinds of suitable project, such as a presentation of their academic paper in a seminar. (Duration of the workshop: 480 Hours or 16 Weeks) Remarking 1. Students can alternatively take JC.490 or JC.491 (3 Credits). 2. Those who are not enrolled in this subject are automatically required to take JC.490 or JC.491.

COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT JC.206 Introduction of Speech Communication 3 Credits This subject aims to provide students an introduction to speech communication and basic skills in effective speech. The topic studies will include its definition and boundaries, fundamentals of filming aesthetics and various theorists‘ theory. Students should be familiar with the stylish development of the film, to be able to understand how the film deliveries its ideas within the film. Successful students will be skilled in critical thinking and analysis of film criticism as well as have an understanding in the development of the character, philosophy, the political idea and other issues which addressed in the film, for example, an issue on the minority group and mass communication.
