In 1893, the Tiffany Chapel was created for the Chicago world's fair (World's Columbian Exposition). Louis Comfort Tiffany's exhibit at the fair was developed by the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company. The exhibit was installed at the Tiffany & Co. pavilion in the Manufacturers and Liberal Arts Building. Today, the chapel can be seen at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park, Florida. The chapel in its form and design is one of the most beautiful that my wife and I have seen. The room, except for two of the four benches is in its original state as at the exhibit in Chicago. From its "decorative moldings, altar floor, carved plaster arches, marble and glass‐mosaic furnishings, four leaded glass windows, sixteen glass‐mosaic encrusted columns (1,000 pounds each) and a ten‐foot by eight‐foot electrified chandelier. The nonhistorical parts of the chapel include walls, nave floor, and ceilings." <Morse Museum> <morsemusem.org> The museum staff commented to us that many people who enter the chapel are so moved by the room's beauty that many sit on the benches and pray. After the Chicago fair, he moved the chapel to his Tiffany studios. It then was purchased by a wealthy woman and installed in 1898 in the crypt of New York's Cathedral Church of Saint John Divine. <Morse Museum> <morsemusem.org> It was used for about ten years but fell into disrepair, due to water damage. Tiffany became concerned and acquired the chapel in 1916. He moved and reinstalled the chapel at his Long Island estate called Laurelton Hall. -

GALLERY VIII TIFFANY STUDIOS DESIGNS OBJECT GUIDE Teams of talented artists and artisans in multiple locations—from workshops in Manhattan to a glass-and-metal factory in Corona, Queens—enabled Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) to meet growing demand for works that reflected boundless variety, experimentation, and innovation. Artfully designed, high-quality objects were the hallmark of Tiffany’s companies over the course of sixty years. ETERNAL LIGHT: THE SACRED STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS OF LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY EXPLORES GILDED AGE BEAUTY IN A 21ST-CENTURY LIGHT Chicago, IL—April 24, 2019—This fall, the Richard H. Driehaus Museum will present Eternal Light: The Sacred Stained-Glass Windows of Louis Comfort Tiffany, focusing on the design and production of Tiffany’s ecclesiastical window commissions—and exploring these works in the context of both the art and social history of the period. At the heart of the exhibition are eleven outstanding, religiously themed windows made between 1880 and 1925 that demonstrate the signature designs, working methods, techniques, and production styles of Tiffany and his workshops. Works have been drawn from major public and private collections across the United States, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass, and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. The exhibition also includes a number of works that have not been on public view since the closure of the Richard H. Driehaus Gallery of Stained Glass at Navy Pier. Organized by the Driehaus Museum, Eternal Light: The Sacred Stained-Glass Windows of Louis Comfort Tiffany includes more than 25 works by Tiffany and his artists and will be on view from September 7, 2019 – March 8, 2020. “Eternal Light looks without sentiment at the ecclesiastical windows of the Tiffany firm as rich reminders that America is ever-changing,” said Richard P. Townsend, Executive Director of the Richard H. Tiffany Glass: Painting with Color and Light includes twenty Tiffany Studios leaded glass lamps, five large stained glass windows, hanging shades, and three forgeries modeled after Tiffany’s iconic lamp designs, all from The Neaustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass. Two exhibitions from the Woodson Art Museum’s glass collection juxtapose the intricate, feminine designs of the Victorian Era with the more modern and restrained aesthetics of the Art Nouveau period. Enduring Beauty: Art Nouveau Glass features bold iridescent glass in sleek undulating forms typical of the decorative, yet utilitarian, turn-of-the-twentieth-century glassware. Victorian Art Glass Baskets also from the Art Museum’s collection, feature bright colors “woven” throughout delicate glass reminiscent of frills on tutus and unfurling flower petals. -

A nonprofit organization, ICWA is dedicated to preserving the windows for future generations to discover and enjoy. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Tiffany designs were in great demand for American churches. It is estimated that 50% of Tiffany’s church windows have been lost, so the rediscovery of a series such as Angels Representing Seven Churches is a boon for the history of American glass. (“Scenic Hudson”) urges the United States Coast Guard (“USCG”) to halt the proposed rulemaking to establish ten new anchorage grounds in the Hudson River between Yonkers, New York and Kingston, New York (Docket No. USCG-2016-0132). If, despite all the reasons set forth below, the USCG continues with the rulemaking process, it must conduct environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”), including preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (“EIS”). I. INTRODUCTION Scenic Hudson is a non-profit environmental organization based in Poughkeepsie, New York, working to protect and restore the Hudson River and its majestic landscape as an irreplaceable national treasure and a vital resource for residents and visitors. A crusader for the valley since 1963, we are credited with saving fabled Storm King Mountain from a destructive industrial project and launching the modern grass-roots environmental movement.
