Alternative selections are offered each shabbat: a shorter reading (around twenty verses) and a longer one (around thirty verses). The readings are a guide and congregations may choose to read more or less from within that part of the parashah. On certain special shabbatot, a special second (or exceptionally, third) scroll reading is read in addition to the week’s portion. Haftarah readings are chosen to parallel key elements in the section of the Torah being read and therefore vary from one year in the triennial cycle to the next. Some of the suggested haftarot are from taken from k’tuvim (Writings) rather than n’vi’ivm (Prophets). When this is the case the appropriate, adapted blessings can be found on page 245 of the MRJ siddur, Seder Ha-t’fillot. This calendar follows the Biblical definition of the length of festivals. -

[email protected] 1 Ki Tissa 5779 When Moses Got It Wrong At the very beginning of a service we sometimes see a strange custom. As the service begins and people try to ascertain whether there is a minyan in the room - the quorum of ten Jewish adults that we need for saying the Kaddish and other prayers - an act of not-counting seems to be taking place. Rather than just enumerating people on their fingers, we see people counting with a little nod of the head, or a movement of the eyes, or even by enunciating the words ‘not-one, not-two, not-three, not-four.’ And you might even see someone quoting an apparently random verse from Psalms - hoshia et amekha u’varekh et nahlatekha u’r’em venas’em ad ha-olam! The reason for all of this is to be found at the very beginning of this week’s Torah portion, a part that often goes unexamined because of the rich content later on - the building of the Golden Calf, Moses’ reaction, the second set of tablets and the moment in which God passes close to Moses. By contrast, the opening verses feel very mundane: The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: When you take a census of the Israelite people according to their enrollment each shall pay the Lord a ransom for himself on being enrolled, that no plague come upon them through their being enrolled. This is what everyone entered in the records shall pay: a half-shekel by the sanctuary weight - twenty gerahs to the shekel… Everyone who is entered in the records, from twenty years up, shall give the Lord’s offering: the rich shall not pay more and the poor shall not pay less… You shall take the expiation money and apply it to the Tent of Meeting. -

Parashat HaShavuah r;hB Vayikra (Leviticus) Understanding the Parsha 25:1-26:2 B’har Leviticus 25:1-26:2 (On Mount (Sinai) We will Learn how to 1) interpret the main theme (subject)of a Parsha (weekly reading from the Torah), 2) make thematic connections to that Parsha (study the Scriptures related by a common theme [subject], line upon line and precept upon precept) 3) learn how to gain greater understanding of the Parsha we are looking at through its thematic connections to other portions of Scripture. Chiastic Structures Within the Torah Back in Parashat Mishpatim, we saw an example of achiastic structure in the Torah. A chiastic structure is a thematic method of organizing the stories of the Torah. Some believe, the Scriptures are a hodge-podge of stories hooked together in a book; but, they couldn’t be further from the truth. The Scriptures (and the Torah in particular) are a VERY organized and structured document. In fact, they are so well organized, once you understand how to uncover their organizational principles you will definitely fall on your knees and give glory to Adonai, knowing that only an all-knowing, all-powerful Elohim (God) could have developed such highly structured approach. In this lesson, we will uncover another chiastic structure woven through the stories found in the books of Exodus and Leviticus. Thematic analysis is THE primary method and model we should be using to understand and interpret the Scriptures. Adonai intended for us to study the Scripturesthematically. The Stirring Possibilities of Generative Constraint Parashat Ki Tissa 3.6.21 Rabbi Sharon Brous What if all this pain, all this isolation, death, illness, constriction, could awaken in us our own most audacious imagination, about our lives, this country, the world? The story of a young artist, the monarch butterfly rescue mission, and our own quest to make this period of confinement a generative and creative time. We’re getting milkweed this coming week. I’m so excited. I’ve been waiting a year for this. Just over a year ago, in one of my last meetings before pandemic, I sat in café with a new friend who told me about the monarch butterfly shortage. Like so many devastating effects of climate change, milkweed—the only thing monarchs eat—is becoming scarce because of excessive land development and the widespread overuse of weed killer. Without milkweed, the monarchs will go extinct. My friend and her kids decided to do their part to help—they planted milkweed in front of their house, and watched every day as it became a haven for monarch butterflies. Since then, we’ve heard R’ Artson and Elana speak about their own adventures with milkweed, and we’ve eagerly awaited the arrival of our own. I think it’s clear why so many of us are so invested in the monarch butterfly revival project. It’s not only because they’re beautiful, magical creatures, nor is it only because it frankly feels like the least we can do to help reverse course on some of the destruction caused by human greed and recklessness, with near total disregard for the creatures with whom we share this planet. -

Mabou) Abstract Terpenes is a large group of compounds found in flowers, stems, leaves, roots and other parts of numerous plant species. They are built up from isoprene units with the general formula (C5H8)n. They can be grouped into classes according to the number of isoprene units (n) in the molecule: hemiterpenes (C5H8), monoterpenes (C10H16), sesquiterpenes (C15H24), diterpenes (C20H32), triterpenes (C30H48), tetraterpenes (C40H64), and polyterpenes (C5H8)n. Most of the terpenoids with the variation in their structures are biologically active and are used worldwide for the treatment of many diseases. Many terpenoids inhibited different human cancer cells and are used as anticancer drugs such as Taxol and its derivatives. Many flavorings and nice fragrances are consisting on terpenes because of its nice aroma. Terpenes and its derivatives are used as antimalarial drugs such as artemisinin and related compounds. Meanwhile, terpenoids play a diverse role in the field of foods, drugs, cosmetics, hormones, vitamins, and so on. Torah Reflections on Parashat Ki Tissa Exodus 30:11-34:35 Imagine: After communing with God on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights, an inspired Moses, Tablets in his arms, returns to his people and finds them dancing around the Golden Calf. With impulsive and unrestrained anger, Moses smashes the Tablets, and only later, after he has destroyed the Golden Calf and made the Children of Israel ingest its ashes, does he ask Aaron why this sin has occurred. In the eyes of Moses, his people betrayed him. A part of himself, his spiritual and physical community, malfunctioned to the point of non-recognition. When he first left camp to ascend Mount Sinai, this body had appeared united and strong. However, the apparent well-being and cohesion had broken down or proven illusory. After this bone-shaking crisis, Moses pleas with God for reassurance, for the intimacy of intimacies—please, let me see Your very Being, let me know Your essence. Moses yearns to grasp existence as a unified whole. He wants to see beyond the confounding uncertainties, contrasts and contradictions. God grants Moses his request, but with a twist. Moses will not be allowed to see God’s face, “but My back, you shall see” (Exodus 33:23). Moses asks for the piercing clarity that comes from viewing another’s face and looking into another’s eyes, and God offers him instead, a view from behind. A view of a part of the Divine that remains concealed. When Moses cries out for insight, he is granted a glimpse of that which lies outside his normal field of vision, for it is there that the revelation he so desires, resides. -

Page 1 Ki Tissa 5774 Rabbi David Wolkenfeld The Septuagint, the ancient translation of the Torah into Greek, was written by 70 scholars who were locked into 70 different rooms and told to produce a translation of the Torah. Miraculously, they produced the identical translation. Each scholar had made the same adjustments and word choices when translating from Hebrew to Greek. We of course know that isn’t such a big miracle. If the 70 scholars had been in the SAME room and been able to agree on a translation…that would have been a real miracle… This legend, quoted in rabbinic tradition, suggests that translating the torah into Greek was a good thing, warranting a miracle. There is another strand of rabbinic through that sees the translation of the Torah as a terrible tragedy in Jewish history. Massechet Sofrim goes so far as to stay that the day the Torah was translated was as hard a day for the Jewish people as the worship of the golden calf. The golden calf! That sounds pretty bad! What is so problematic about translation and what does translating the Torah have to do with the golden calf? The golden calf, its construction and the aftermath of its construction, dominates the parsha this week. But the beginning of our parsha opens with a discussion of the method by which the Jewish people can be counted - not by a direct head-count but by collecting a quantity of silver from every individual and using the sum to calculate the size of the population. The Torah says that each person should give a “half shekel” and that the shekel to be used is “shekel ha-kodesh” or the “sacred shekel.” Why is it called a “sacred shekel?” Ramban explains that it’s the shekel that is used for sacred purposes. -

The fourteen principal oils of the Bible are listed of Ancient Scripture below in order of the most frequently mentioned (Myrrh 156x) to (Rose of Sharon 3x), mentioned only three times. FOURTEEN PRINCIPAL OILS OF THE BIBLE In Proverbs 21:20 we read: “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise.” 1. MYRRH Question: Why would the possession of oil in one’s Mentioned 18x directly + 138x indirectly = 156x house be a sign of wisdom? While “olive oil” is specifically mentioned only 7 times there are 147 instances where it can be inferred. 3. CALAMUS (CANE) (See Appendix D) Olive oil was not only a food, but was Mentioned 5x directly + 65x indirectly = 70x burned in lamps for light and used as a base for Chemistry: Ketones-40%, Phenols-30% blending other oils for religious or medicinal purposes. “Incense” is mentioned 68 times in the Bible. Tikvah Daily: A Shabbat Reader Friday/Saturday, March 13-14, 2020 Shabbat Ki Tissa, 18 Adar, 5780 Endless Devotion By Hillel Halkin Spring 2010 A first reaction to the deluxe new siddur or prayer book recently issued in a Hebrew- Koren Sacks Siddur, English edition by Koren Publishers is that, Hebrew/English Prayerbook at 1,244 handsomely printed, imitation Koren, 1244 pp., $24.95 stamped-leather-bound pages, it is a bit hefty to be carried to synagogue on the Sabbath by the Orthodox users for whom it is primarily intended. To be sure, the ArtScroll Siddur, with which it is meant to compete, has only 200 fewer pages and, printed on thicker paper, is as bulky. But the ArtScroll, the standard siddur of most American Orthodox synagogues since its publication in 1989, is already on their shelves. The Koren Siddur must be brought by the congregant—at least until it gains a place on those shelves too, as its publishers clearly hope that it will. The Koren is large because, like the ArtScroll, it has facing English text and English commentary at the bottom of its pages, both the work of its editor, Great Britain’s distinguished Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks; a spatially generous layout less cluttered than the ArtScroll’s, and a comprehensiveness at least as great. Besides the regular weekday morning, afternoon, and evening services, and their Sabbath and holiday variations, which (with the exception of the long Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur liturgies) are found in any traditional siddur, the Koren includes numerous items that usually are not.
