Catholic Flashback: Remembering the 1978 Election of Pope St. John Paul II
Catholic Flashback: Remembering the 1978 election of Pope St. John Paul II October 16, 1978: The first balcony appearance of newly-elected Pope John Paul II (CNS File Photo) Where were you on October 16, 1978? I was between classes at college in Philadelphia when word came through the hallways that white smoke had been seen coming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. After three days of waiting, we finally had a new pope! I rushed to turn on my tiny black and white TV, and watched as the crowds grew in St. Peter’s Square while commentators speculated as to which Italian cardinal might become the 264th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. I will never forget the announcement in Latin that Cardinal Karol Jozef Wojtyla (1920-2005), at age 58, had been elected as the 263rd successor of St. Peter the Apostle. The news commentators were struggling to figure out who he was, from which country he came, and how to pronounce his name. You see, Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. Those reporting on the conclave from both the Catholic and secular press were all assuming that this new pontiff would also be Italian. Instead, the College of Cardinals elected the Archbishop of Krakow, Poland, who had served in that position since 1963 and who was named a cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1967. Ten interesting facts about the election of Pope John Paul II: 1. The Year of Three Popes: This was the second time in less than eight weeks that Catholics from around the world gathered in front of our televisions to learn the outcome of a papal election. -

Who Really Was Father Luigi Villa? WhoWho ReallyReally WasWas FatherFather LuigiLuigi Villa?Villa? by Dr. Franco Adessa -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One might not even attempt to understand who, in fact, Fr. Luigi Villa was, without taking into account the words spoken by Pope Pius XII to his Pro-Secretary of State, Card. Domenico Tardini: «Tell Mgr. Giambattista Bosio I approve the assignment entrusted to Fr. Luigi Villa from Padre Pio. I grant him a papal mandate, he must earn a degree in Dogmatic Theology and he must be entrusted to the Cardinals: Alfredo Ottaviani, Pietro Palazzini and Pietro Parente. Also tell Msgr. Bosio that, in the history of the Church, this is the first time that such a task has been entrusted to a young priest. Forecasting the Outcome of Closed-Door Decisions: evidence from 500 years of betting on papal conclaves. Abstract Closed-door decisions may be defined as decisions in which the outcome is determined by a limited number of decision-makers and where the process is shrouded in at least some secrecy. In this paper, we examine the use of betting markets to forecast on particular closed- door decision, the election of the Pope. Within the context of 500 years of papal election betting, we employ a unique dataset of betting on the 2013 papal election to investigate how new public information is incorporated into the betting odds. Our results suggest that the market was generally unable to incorporate effectively such information. We venture some possible explanations for our findings and offer suggestions for further research into the prediction and predictability of other ‘closed-door’ decisions. -

One of the corrosive effects of such an “immediate” world is the loss of a sense of history. That sense has nothing to do with the sense of nostalgia for better times in the past – in the Church and across societies. It is the sad outcome of a failure in many education systems around the world to properly value the study of history. Massimo Faggioli is one significant remedy to that deficiency as far as the Catholic Church is concerned. Catholic History and Law A helpful comparison is found by comparing the Church and its evolution to the establishment and growth of the rule of law because a thorough grasp of history is important to understanding good legal practice and the value and the circumstances within which a statute is created by legislatures and courts. As any lawyer worth talking to will tell you, laws are created to remedy an abuse. What is the abuse? All offences are against a deeply held value. A crime is an abuse of a value.
