Originally a hard-driving rocker in the vein of fellow Michigan garage rockers the Rationals and Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger developed into one of the most popular heartland rockers over the course of the ’70s. Combining the driving charge of Ryder’s Detroit Wheels with Stonesy garage rock and devotion to hard-edged soul and R&B, he crafted a distinctively American sound. While he never attained the critical respect of his contemporary Bruce Springsteen, Seger did develop a dedicated following through constant touring with his Silver Bullet Band. Following several years of missed chances and lost opportunities, Seger finally achieved a national audience in 1976 with the back-to-back release of Live Bullet and Night Moves. After the platinum success of those albums, Seger retained his popularity for the next two decades, releasing seven Top Ten, platinum-selling albums in a row. ― Allmusic. 1. STUDIO: 1969. • Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds for Our Purposes, The
"KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

  • Bob Seger Tribute Band to Play Full Moon Jam
City of Bristol Tennessee FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Darlene Cole, Venues Manager Wednesday, July 17, 2013 Community Relations Dept. Phone: 423-764-4171 E-Mail: [email protected] Bob Seger Tribute Band to Play Full Moon Jam The Full Moon Jam is in full swing, with hundreds showing up each Tuesday and Thursday evenings in historic downtown Bristol to listen to the music under the stars. Darlene Cole, Venue Manager for the city said in a recent interview, “The Full Moon Jam has become a part of the music fabric in downtown Bristol. The Jam is over 15 years in the making and it just keeps growing.” Three years ago the city added the tribute segment to the Jam. This segment brings in acts that “reincarnate” major entertainers that normally would not play in a region the size of the tri-cities market. “The tribute series was a huge success the very first year and continues to grow. We have noticed that other cities within the area have taken the idea and made it fit into their summer music programming as well,” Cole said. This year the Jam has already featured the Kenny Chesney tribute, along with The Heart tribute and will follow up with the Bob Seger tribute on July 25th at 7PM. “The tribute band, The System has been faithfully recreating the experience of seeing and hearing Bob Seger live for more than six years to sellout crowds all over the Midwest, with accurate renditions of all your radio favorites, including live arrangements from the quadruple platinum album- Live Bullet,” continued Cole.
