Time really flies when we would like to see it slow down a little and it is hard to imagine that the harvest is just days away as I write this report. It seems like we were only planting the crop and hoping for a good growing season. The season has certainly been a bizarre one on our Island. The rainfall didn’t cooperate with many of us and it appears that we will harvest an average crop. It is my hope that quality will make up for the shortfall in yield. I am very pleased to be able to say that despite the lack of rain, our industry has seen some great things happen. We had some events like Open Farm Day, 4Rs Field Demonstration Trial tailgate meetings, meetings with our Federal Minister of Agriculture and the President of CFIA, and we look forward to being the title sponsor for Farm Day in the City on October 2nd. As growers, we understand the importance of our industry to our provincial economy and the contributions that are made to make our province a wonderful place to live. As Chairman, I am especially proud of Robert Irving and Cavendish Farms for the recent million dollar contribution to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, our main acute care hospital. Mr. Irving’s generosity will benefit not only those involved in the potato industry but all Islanders who use this hospital. It is unfortunate that there are those in this province who criticize his kindness – may these same people never need to use the services of the QEH. Our industry is sorry about the devastating fire Green Diamond experienced at the end of August and although it will take time to rebuild, we are amazed at how quickly they were able to continue serving the agricultural industry in their temporary location. We wish them all the best as they re-establish their presence in Summerside. We all experience times of loss in our life and on behalf of our staff and growers, I want to express condolences to those in our industry who have lost loved ones this summer. We have people who impact our industry in many ways through activities such as sales, adopting and sharing innovations or being dedicated potato farmers and stewards of the land. I thank the families of those remembered in our “In Memoriam” section for providing the information so that we could recognize their loved ones’ achievements and contributions to the development of the PEI potato industry. As I wrap up this report, I want to wish each and every one in our industry a safe and rewarding harvest and leave you with these very appropriate and wise words of President John F Kennedy: “Our farmers deserve praise, NOT condemnation; and their efficiency should be a cause for gratitude, NOT something for which they are penalized.” September/October 2016 Prince Edward Island Potato News 5 POTATO BOARD NEWS Meeting with the Federal Minister of Agriculture The Potato Board executive had the opportunity to meet with federal Minister of Agriculture Lawrence MacAulay on July 31. This was our second meeting with the Minister and we followed up on several items raised at the first meeting back on December 21, 2015. Those included concerns regarding the pending removal of the moratorium on cost recovery fees, the need to continue the current level of cost sharing for research priorities via the New Policy Framework, and the work of the Task Force on Seed Potato Tuber Quality Monitoring. Board staff (left to right) Karen Martin, Kendra Mills and We spent most of our time at the August meeting on Debbie Hirst, Board Chair Alex Docherty and Board GM the need to access new markets for Canadian potatoes, Greg Donald serve up snack size samples of potato dishes to and address situations where we have lost markets or patrons at Red Shores Racetrack in Charlottetown.

  • Fresh Market Potato Varieties Available for Small Scale Growers
FRESH MARKET POTATO VARIETIES FOR SMALL SCALE POTATO GROWERS Walter De Jong Associate Professor School of Integrative Plant Science Cornell University Ithaca, NY 14853 Important criteria when considering which potato variety to grow include: 1) Do my customers want to buy it? 2) Does the variety grow well on my farm? 3) Is disease-free seed of the variety readily available? As Cornell’s potato breeder, I can provide some insight into the second and third criteria. Whether or not a customer wants to buy your potatoes is, of course, up to them. A good place to look at seed availability, from a national perspective, is a summary that the certification section of the Potato Association of America puts together each year. You can download a list of certified seed produced the prior year from https://www.potatoassociation.org/research-2/seed/. This document lists how much seed of each variety was produced in each state. If you want to find out who produced the seed in each state, you’ll need to go to each state’s seed potato certification website. E.g., https://www.maine.gov/dacf/php/seed_potato/index.shtml for Maine or email [email protected] to request a directory for New York. Seed of over 400 varieties was produced in the USA in 2019. The top 40 varieties represent 90% of seed acreage, so are relatively easy to source. It can nevertheless be a challenge to procure seed of minor varieties. Varieties to consider growing in NY, and why: Russets Most long russet potato varieties do not perform well in NY.

[email protected]; 208-939-9965 www.nwpotatoresearch.com Volume XIV, Number 3 February 4, 2014 Late Blight Tuber Resistance of Potato Cultivars Grown in the USA to the New US-24 Strain Lyndon Porter and Chuck Brown, USDA-ARS Vegetable and Forage Crops Research Unit, Prosser, WA; Shelley Jansky, USDA-ARS Vegetable Crops Research Unit, Madison, WI; Jeremiah Dung, Oregon State University, Madras, OR; Dennis Johnson, Washington State University, Pullman, WA Late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is a major annual threat to potato production in the U.S. and worldwide. Management of late blight on a worldwide scale was conservatively estimated to be 6.7 billion dollars in 2009 (Hu et al., 2012). Fungicides are used to manage late blight since most major potato cultivars lack foliar and tuber resistance (Porter et al., 2004; Miller et al., 2006). The predominant strains of P. infestans impacting potato production have changed over time in the Northwest and across the U.S. The newest strains of P. infestans include US-22, US-23 and US-24 (Danies, 2013). These strains are replacing the US-11 and US-8 strains in some locations. Due to the changing strains of P. infestans infecting potato, it is important for potato breeders to find potato lines with resistance to current and past strains of P. infestans to establish stable resistance. Although the foliage of most major potato cultivars grown in the Pacific Northwest is susceptible to infection by P. infestans, that doesn’t mean the tubers are susceptible.
