Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute.

  • AR Rahman and the Global Routes of Indian Popular Music
BEYOND KITSCH: A. R. RAHMAN AND THE GLOBAL ROUTES OF INDIAN POPULAR MUSIC Stephanie Lou Jackson A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: David Harnish, Advisor Esther Clinton Jeremy Wallach © 2010 Stephanie Jackson All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor At the 2009 Academy Awards, A. R. Rahman became the first Indian composer to win Best Score and Best Song (“Jai Ho”) for his music in the film, Slumdog Millionaire (2008). This event not only granted Rahman another prestigious accolade for his accomplishments as a popular film music composer (i.e., he has been awarded many times over in India for his music), but it gave Rahman new star-status recognition among a Western audience. Although enormously famous in India and well-known among the South Asian diaspora located throughout many parts of the world, Rahman remained, up until that time, virtually unknown among mainstream U.S. audiences. U.S. audiences today are perhaps more likely than a decade ago to recognize the sounds and images of Indian cinema known as Bollywood, a cultural artifact, once considered “kitsch,” that increasingly traverses international popular cultures. Consequently, the appeal of Rahman’s Bollywood music among a wider global audience (as presented in Slumdog Millionaire) coincides with the global circulation and consumption of Bollywood films and music in recent years. I suggest that the appeal for Rahman’s music outside of India cannot be explained by the Western fascination with the exotic “Other," but instead involves a cultural affinity for a type of style and sound set forth in Rahman’s music.

  • Mafia Queens of Mumbai- a Feminist- Psychoanalyst Perspective
WAFFEN-UND KOSTUMKUNDE JOURNAL ISSN NO: 0042-9945 Mafia Queens of Mumbai- A feminist- psychoanalyst perspective By Sompurba Basu Assistant Professor, Reva University, Bangalore Key Words: Underworld, Mafia, drug-trafficking, psychoanalysis, feminist Abstract The Mumbai Underworld has always been an intriguing and fascinating sphere for many authors and filmmakers alike. Vishal Bharadwaj himself says that crime is juicier than spirituality, guns are more attractive than roses and perhaps, his adherence to this notion is predominant in his movies too, where crime plays a major role. The Mumbai drug-trafficking business which is an integral part of the Mumbai Mafia, didn‟t go untreated by him. The resultant by-product was the film, „Kaminey‟. When we come to authors, we have Vikram Chandra, whose book, „Sacred Games‟ has been made into a popular web-series in Netflix. Perhaps, the best crime writer to emerge into prominence is S. Hussain Zaidi, who is a veteran journalist, currently working as the resident editor of Deccan Chronicle/Asian Age, Mumbai. His bestselling book, „Black Friday‟, based on the 1993 serial bomb blasts was filmed by the very talented Anurag Kashyap in the year, 2004. His intense research on the Mumbai Mafia has been monumental in the production of all his Bestsellers and various movies. In this paper we will take into consideration his book, “Mafia Queens of Mumbai”, which depicts the lives of the very gutsy and lethal women mafia of Mumbai, their psychological complexities and the crisis, which pushed them beyond the limitations of human morality. Though he writes, not to pedestalize this pernicious race, yet we cannot ignore the feminist touch and sympathetic treatment to these women, which we can also term as the writer‟s folly.

  • A Case Study of Mumbai City? Sumita Sarkar* & Arvind Tiwari?
Combating Organised Crime A Case Study of Mumbai City? Sumita Sarkar* & Arvind Tiwari? Organised crime is not confined to the boundaries of any one country and has become a transnational problem. Organised criminal activity has existed in different forms since ancient times, but contemporary patterns of organised crime are infinitely more complex than they have been at any point of time in history. This paper places the specific case of organised crime in the city of Mumbai within the context of transnational trends in criminal activity. It first examines the larger international discourse on organised crime, clarifying concepts and outlining the nature and magnitude of various component phenomena across the globe. • Contemporary Challenges for Extraditing Criminals in India: an Analysis” Neel Kamal Basumatary Uttaranchal University, Law College Dehradun Abstract
Volume 12, September 2020 ISSN 2581-5504 “Contemporary Challenges for Extraditing Criminals in India: An Analysis” Neel Kamal Basumatary Uttaranchal University, Law College Dehradun Abstract At present, it has become essentially important and necessary to extradite criminal fugitive who escapes to another county after committing a criminal offense or other offenses which are punishable by law within the territory of the country from where he had fled. In general extradition laws of a country are based on the extradition treaties between two or more countries. Currently, since 2002 India has filed a request for extraditing fugitive to the United Kingdom for 28 fugitives, who are Indian citizens. The United Kingdom has extradited only one Indian citizen. As the United Kingdom has strong human rights laws it is often quite challenging for the Indian authority to extradite a criminal fugitive from the authority of the United Kingdom as fugitives often take plea in the extradition hearing submitting in the Court of competent jurisdiction that the condition of the prison is very poor in India and subject to inhuman treatment which results in the violation of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Right. Key Words: Fugitive Economic Act, 2018; Westminster Magistrates Court; Bank Fraud; Embezzlement; Counterfeit Currencies, Chief Executive Officer, European Convention on Human Rights. INTRODUCTION As according to an old proverb, “no one can outrun the long arm of law”, profoundly illustrates the objectives of legal systems whereupon committing an offense in one country and thereafter escaping or fleeing or absconding to other country and reside in that country to evade legal prosecution and arrest, no matter where they reside shall eventually be brought to justice.

However, despite various YouTube content creators garnering attention for their connection to rising global right-wing populism and hate groups— including viral creator PewDiePie, a Swedish gamer— the platform’s ability for political discourse has been little studied. Thus, this paper, aided by theory on ‘anti-publics’, contemporary right-wing populism, and social identity, begins to unravel the complexities of political discourse in this particular online community. Through the analysis of sixty-thousand comments from six of PewDiePie’s most popular videos, this project affirms that YouTube in this context does not prescribe to the majority of elements of a Habermasian public sphere as in the original definition.
