October 25, 2020 (21 Pentecost Morning Prayer)-2 Daily Morning Prayer: Rite Two The Feast of St. Alfred the Great King of the West Saxons, 899 October 25, 2020 at 10 a.m. Prelude Trumpet Voluntary John Travers Hymn By the Light of Burning Campfires Ton-y-botel Words: St. Alfred’s Parishioners, 1965 Officiant The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him. Habakkuk 2:20 Confession of Sin The Officiant says to the people Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Silence may be kept. Officiant and People together, all kneeling Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Priest alone stands and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 2 The Invitatory and Psalter All stand Officiant Lord, open our lips. People And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Know this: The Lord himself is God; * he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; * and his faithfulness endures from age to age. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit: * As it was in the beginning is now, * and will be for ever. Amen. 4 The Lessons The First Lesson: Wisdom 6:1-3, 9-12. Reader A lesson from Wisdom. Listen therefore, O kings, and understand; learn, O judges of the ends of the earth. Give ear, you that rule over multitudes, and boast of many nations. For your dominion was given you from the Lord, and your sovereignty from the Most High; he will search out your works and inquire into your plans. To you then, O monarchs, my words are directed, so that you may learn wisdom and not transgress. For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness, and those who have been taught them will find a defence. Therefore set your desire on my words; long for them, and you will be instructed. Wisdom is radiant and unfading, and she is easily discerned by those who love her, and is found by those who seek her. The multitude of the wise is the salvation of the world, and a sensible king is the stability of any people. Therefore be instructed by my words, and you will profit. After each Lesson the Reader may say The Word of the Lord. Answer Thanks be to God. 5 Canticle 9 The First Song of Isaiah Ecce, Deus David Hurd Surely, it is God who saves me; * I will trust in him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, * and he will be my Savior. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing * from the springs of salvation. And on that day you shall say, * Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name; Make his deeds known among the peoples; * see that they remember that his Name is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, * and this is known in all the world. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, * for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Second Lesson: II Thessalonians 2:13-17 Reader A lesson from Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians. We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. After each Lesson the Reader may say The Word of the Lord. Answer Thanks be to God. 6 Canticle 19 The Song of the Redeemed Magna et mirabilia Henry Smart O ruler of the universe, Lord God, great deeds are they that you have done, * surpassing human understanding. Your ways are ways of righteousness and truth, * O King of all the ages. Who can fail to do you homage, Lord, and sing the praises of your Name? for you only are the Holy One. All nations will draw near and fall down before you, * because your just and holy works have been revealed. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The Holy Gospel: Luke 6:43-49 Reader A lesson from the Gospel according to Luke. Jesus said, “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you? I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.” After each Lesson the Reader may say The Word of the Lord. Answer Thanks be to God. 7 The Sermon The Reverend Peter Lane (A moment for reflection.) The Apostles’ Creed Officiant and People together, all standing I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
