Tennis DIVISION I Men’S Tennis DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Southern California wins team tennis title: Southern California downed Ohio State to capture the Division I Men’s Tennis Championship May 19 at Texas A&M. The Trojans outlasted the Buckeyes, 4-1, to earn their first team title in seven years. Southern California’s Robert Farah defeated Ohio State’s Bryan Koniecko in three sets to clinch the championship for the Trojans. Farah dropped the first set, 5-7, but re- sponded decisively, taking the second, 6-1. Early in the third set, the opponents remained on serve, but after going up a break, 4-3, about midway through the frame, Farah went on to serve out the match with a 6-4 win. Southern California also registered victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions. Senior Abdullah Magdas defeated Matt Allare, 6-2, 6-3, while freshman Daniel Nguyen beat Chase Buchanan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. The Buckeyes’ lone point on the day came from Justin Kronauge’s victory over Jaak Poldma in No. 3 singles. Kronauge earned the first set, 7-6, in a tiebreak before taking the second set, 6-4. Southern California took an early lead in doubles after Farah and Steve Johnson posted an 8-3 win over Kronauge and Allare. Ohio State’s Koniecko and Shuhei Uzawa evened the contest, beating Magdas and Nguyen, 8-4, at the No. 2 position. Then Southern California’s Poldma teamed with Matt Kecki at the No. 3 position to down the Ohio State tandem of Buchanan and Steven Moneke, 9-7, to earn the doubles point for the Trojans. In the individual portion of the tournament, Mississippi freshman Devin Britton captured the men’s singles championship with a three-set victory over Ohio State’s Moneke. After dropping the first set, 3-6, to Moneke, a two-time All-American riding a 22-match winning streak entering the final, Britton took the next two, 6-2, 6-3, to become the first Rebel in program history to win a national title. He also was the first freshman to earn the title since 1996 and the first unseeded player to take the individual crown since 1997. Facing his third seeded player in the tournament, Britton kept pace early in the contest. But Moneke broke the freshman to take a 4-3 lead and ultimately won the set, 6-3. In the second set, Britton fought off two break points at 2-2 to forge a 4-2 lead and surge to a 6-2 win. The freshman also established a sizable lead in the decisive third set, breaking Moneke to go up 4-2. After building a 5-3 advantage, Britton clinched the championship on an ace. In men’s doubles action, Dominic Inglot and Michael Shabaz of Virginia rallied after losing the first set and surviving a tiebreak in the second set to win the doubles title. Inglot and Shabaz defeated the second-seeded tandem of John-Patrick Smith and Davey Sandgren of Tennessee, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 to become the first unseeded team in six years to win the championship. Inglot and Shabaz also became the first team representing the Atlantic Coast Conference to win a doubles title. In the decisive third set, the Cavaliers broke the Vols in the third game to earn a 2-1 lead, and then the match remained on serve for eight games. Serving for the match and the championship, Shabaz generated two aces and two service winners to clinch the title for Virginia. Inglot and Shabaz finished the season with a school record 41 victories. • Stan Smith Record at the Ojai
By Steve Pratt Fifty years ago this month, Stan Smith came to Ojai as a shy, 18-year-old USC freshman from Pasadena, the reigning national junior champion, and playing on one of tennis’ grandest stages, the final of the Men’s Open Division at the 66th annual Ojai Tennis Tournament. In a probably otherwise forgettable final for Smith, he was beaten by UCLA junior Charlie Pasarell, 6-3, 6-1, on that day in 1965 in just 38 minutes with Pasarell’s passing shots no match for the net-charging Smith. In the doubles final later in the day, the Los Angeles Times reported that Smith and Bob Lutz teamed up to exact some revenge against Pasarell and his UCLA teammate Joaquin Loyo-Mayo, winning the match, 2-6, 9-7, 8-6 in a division that debuted at The Ojai in the year 1900. It will be hard for Smith not to get nostalgic during the playing of the 115th edition of the venerable tournament known as one of the most storied anywhere within tennis circles. Smith is returning to The Ojai in April for the first time since he began his long and storied career all those years ago as the tournament’s honored guest in 2015. Smith will be the featured speaker at the Thursday night barbecue, as well as mingle with Ojai tennis fans at a special fundraising wine event hosted by the Ojai Vineyard Tasting Room on Friday night. A good friend of Weil Academy’s Mark Weil, Smith’s daughter once attended the Weil Academy and he paid a visit to Ojai while she was there a little over a decade ago.
