Alexander Abstract The Timber Resource Inventory Model (TRIM) was used to make several projections of forest industry timber supply for the Douglas-fir region. The sensitivity of these pro- jections to assumptions about management and yields is discussed. A base run is compared to runs in which yields were altered, stocking adjustment was eliminated, harvest assumptions were changed, and management intensity assumptions were changed. The objective was to determine if there is a difference in supply projections and age-class distributions in the short term (20 years) and the long term (50 years) when assumptions are changed. Changing harvest assumptions had an effect on yield projections and age-class dis- tributions only when artificially high and low harvests were applied. Harvesting oldest age classes first had little effect on age-class distribution projections or supply pro- jections. Changing assumptions about intensity of management and yields can have an effect on supply projections in both the short and the long term. Intensifying cur- rent management, deemphasizing harvest of older age classes, and using modified yield functions increased supply projections. The model showed that long-term vol- ume projections decrease when future inventories are managed in the same way as current inventories. Age-class distributions were not significantly affected by changing assumptions for management and yield. Keywords: Supply projections, age-class distribution, sensitivity analysis. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. Executive Summary The global fashion business is going through a period of intense change and competition, with disruption coming in many colors: global online marketplaces, slower growth, more startups and consumers who now seem bored by what once excited them. Many U.S. shoppers have grown tired of buying Prada and Chanel suits and prefer to spend their money on experiences rather than clothes. Questions about fashion companies’ labor and environmental practices are leading to new policies, although some critics remain unconvinced. Fashion still relies on creativity, innovation and consumer attention, some of which comes from technology and some from celebrities. Here are some key takeaways: High-fashion brands must now compete with “fast fashion,” apparel sold on eBay and vintage sites. Risk factors for fashion companies include China’s growth slowdown, reduced global trade, Brexit, terrorist attacks and erratic commodity prices. Plus-size women are a growing segment of the market, yet critics say designers are ignoring them. Overview José Neves launched Farfetch during the global economic crisis of 2008, drawing more on his background in IT and software than a love of fashion. His idea: Allow small designers and fashion shops to sell their wares worldwide on a single online marketplace. The site will “fetch” fashion from far-off places. -

When collections are completed, fashion designers introduce them through the “fashion show,” a field used to present their collection ideas in an impressive and striking manner. Through this form, the designer employs performative presentation to help put across the intellectual message, the allure of a fashionable creation, or to mediate diverse creations in a visual way as a collection. Fashion shows have a strong impact due to the atmosphere created which is surrounded by music, video art, performance and stage design. These 20-25 minute shows represent the whole collection through the background idea of the collection and designer’s inner world, by using colors, textures, stories, forms and visuals. Thus, an artistic approach is key when designing a show in order to reveal the collection’s idea in its most relevant form. The aim of this paper is to examine how fashion shows are curated by artistic applications and to reveal the ways of narrating stories which are not written but are conveyed to communities through performative presentations. In this respect, an interpretative approach was adopted and related artistic applications from contemporary examples held between 2013 and 2018 were analyzed as part of narrating a collection. -
