First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

For Immediate Release August 13, 2012 EYE EMPIRE Announces Extensive Fall Touring Plans with NONPOINT, SEETHER, and More New Album ‘Impact’ – In Stores Now! American hard rockers EYE EMPIRE recently joined up with Nonpoint on a tour of several Eastern states that will travel through the end of August. The band will then continue on with a headline tour of several Southern states across the U.S., ultimately linking up with Seether from October 5th through the latter part of the month. See below for all current tour dates. Corey Lowery (Dark New Day, Stereomud, Stuck Mojo) and B.C. Kochmit (Dark New Day, Switched) formed EYE EMPIRE in 2007 with a rotating line-up of drummers—a spot now permanently filled by Ryan Bennett, formerly of Texas Hippie Coalition. In 2009, Donald Carpenter (formerly of Submersed) joined the band as the vocalist. Their latest release, a double album entitled Impact, was released in June 2012 and contains several tracks from the band’s self-released 2011 album, Moment of Impact, plus unreleased, acoustic, and live versions of songs. Several songs on Impact were recorded with Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose, and the track ‘Victim (Of The System)’ features guest vocals from Lajon Witherspoon, also of Sevendust. By the same token, we tear down the relics of the past in order to make way for the innovations of the future. As every rebirth requires reinvention, GODSMACK— Sully Erna [vocals, guitar], Tony Rombola [guitar], Robbie Merrill [bass], and Shannon Larkin [drums]–continue a similar cycle on their seventh full-length and debut for BMG, When Legends Rise. The multiplatinum four-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated Boston bastion of hard rock raises its voice louder than ever on their first album in four years. “You’ve got to burn it down to build it up,” affirms Erna. “When Legends Rise is a metaphor. Life can get challenging at times. It can knock you onto the ground. However, if you reach inside of yourself, find that inner strength, and rise up again, you’ll flourish. Over the past few years, I went through a really tough time, but I learned this firsthand. Coming out on the other side, we’re going to do this bigger and better than we ever have. We’re ready to work.” Truth is, the members of GODSMACK have never been afraid to put in the work… Like the city they call home, these musicians speak louder, fight harder, and grow stronger each day. Through an uncompromising attitude and uncanny knack for a hummable hook, they quietly became one of modern rock’s most reliable and resonant institutions.
