The July / August Broadsheet 2018 The July / August Broadsheet 2018 for the parishes of Humshaugh with Simonburn & Wark, and Chollerton with Birtley Gunnerton & Thockrington Revd. Steve Wilkinson Rural Dean of Bellingham Parson of Humshaugh, Simonburn & Wark Tel: 01434 681304 email: [email protected] www.humshaughbenefice.org.uk Chollerton Vicarage Dear All, I write this with excitement and hope as I look forward to coming to serve in Bellingham Deanery in the Chollerton group of parishes, and to meeting with you all in due course. Revd Steve has asked me to write and introduce myself as I get ready to move, so I am surrounded by boxes, including one with small cheeping chicks as I write this! I have spent all of my ordained ministry in Carlisle Diocese groups of small rural parishes. Before I was ordained I studied music at University, and then worked as a Librarian, first at Lancaster University Library, and then at the Agricultural College in Lancashire, followed by 6 years as Librarian at the Young offenders Institution near Lancaster. I served my curacy in Kirkby Lonsdale where I learnt how to lamb sheep, and have continued to help out on the same farm in lambing time ever since. Long Marton Rectory has a large garden, so I have a few Greyface Dartmoor sheep, pilgrim Geese and Indian Runner ducks as well as rare breed hens. I hope that some will be able to come with me if there is space! I come from Cullercoats originally, and was at school in Newcastle, and I have lots of relatives in Northumberland, so this is a return much closer to my roots. I am passionate about rural life and ministry, ( I am Diocesan Rural Officer in Carlisle Diocese) and I am moved by the beauty of God’s creation. I look forward to coming to share in your lives and journey with Christ in the area. I hope we can all grow as we share in God’s love and mission in the future. God bless you. Sarah Lunn. th Saturday 8 of September 2pm. till4pm. ‘Messy Church – Gone Fishing !’ Come and join us at Humshaugh for Messy Church on the vicarage lawn and in church. After admiring the beautiful flowers and shrubs, we were treated with a gorgeous tea. On July the 12th our Branch has invited members of the Hexham Deanery to an afternoon in the Sill – hopefully it will be a sunny day again….. On Thursday, September 6th, Adrian Langford will return to give another talk about his work in the Ambulance Service. The meeting will take place at the Langfords’ home and start at 1.30pm. Pub Quiz It is a long time ago, but the May Quiz was won by “One Man Down” and raised £135 for the Humshaugh Playing Field Trust. No Quiz in July and August – the September one will be on Tuesday September 18th at 8.30pm and will be in aid of the Crown Players Drama Group. The Question Master will be Mick Jonas (who will be running the Great North Run that month in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK.) Humshaugh First School To celebrate the Year 4 leavers, there will be a wonderful production of “Jona – a Fishy tail”. It will be performed on Wednesday July the 11th at 9.15am and 5.30pm. We want to wish all the pupils a splendid summer holiday – the start of the Summer Term is on the 4th of September and on Saturday the 8th, there will be a relaunch of Messy Church in the Vicarage. HAP The films in the Village Hall will start again this autumn! The first one will be on Friday October the 12th and will be followed by each second Friday in November, January, February and March. Humshaugh Food & Flower Show This will be held in and around the Village Hall on Saturday September 15th Starting at 12pm until 5pm. There will be competitions for adults and children in baking, flowers, photography and many others categories. Fabulous prizes can be won by the top scorers! For any further information, please ring George Benson on 681203. North Tyne Voices The Humshaugh Choir, run by Kathryn Davidson, will be giving a performance during the Bellingham County Show on Saturday, August 25th. Liesbeth Langford —————oOo————— WARK PARISH NEWS Well, this is a month and a bit for us here at St. Michael’s! We have a garden fete on a Sunday and a 200th birthday to celebrate. So let us get going. Garden fete first. Sunday 8th July from 2.00pm on the Village Green. Any contributions for the wide ranging stalls will be gladly taken by Ann, Jani or John. Any help on the day will also be most welcome. This day, seriously, keeps our church alive here in the village. Please do support as you can. Now it is not often we can say a 200th birthday is to be celebrated; but it is. On 12th August St. Michael’s, as it stands today, will achieve that milestone. We are having a special service of celebration for the occasion at 11.00am, to which all are welcome. The Rtd. Revd. Stephen Platten along with our Rural Dean, Revd. Steve Wilkinson will lead the service. In relation to this Mike Gibson, along with a colleague, is arranging for a commemorative stamp to be produced. I believe they will cost £3.00 with limited availability. Please speak to Mike or myself for further details. We are privileged to have Gillie Brexson, Property Director of Greenwich Hospital, joining us to give a talk on the establishment of the churches within the North Tyne. Following the service, in true Wark form, there will be a buffet Lunch in the churchyard. (If we can get the tent erected) Help please!! I simply cannot allow these notes to go without saying a tribute to Barty Potts. Words cannot say enough. Thank you to Barty for the control of the Monday Men and the work undertaken for us at St. Michael’s. The attendance at your funeral was a tribute to you. The thoughts of all the parish are also with the family of the late Joyce Rutherford at this sad time. 4 The Guild next meet on 3rd September with Anne Bell being host. Please join with them as they forward plan some of the church events. I believe all have concerns regarding the use of plastic following the recent TV exposure. I have picked this piece up from a national newspaper` The Church of England has joined the war on plastic waste, with vicars buying cassocks made from recycled bottles’ we’ll just wait for the rustle from the entry from the vestry. Time will tell. Until we speak again. Love to all John xxx Chollerton WI We will be welcoming Natalie Wood to give a talk on Aloe Vera/Bee Products at our meeting on Wednesday 4th July, 7.30p.m. in Barrasford Village Hall. Our August meeting will be held in St Christopher’s Gunnerton, when we will take a trip ‘Down Memory Lane’. Visitors always welcome. ——————————————————————————————————————— Christian Aid Bacon Butty Event, 12th May at Chollerton Hearse House. A grand total of £320 was raised at this event. That is because I am a loyal subject of Her Majesty the Queen. I have not known any other monarch in my life because she has been Queen longer than I have been alive. On September 9th she will, God willing, have reigned over our nation longer than any other monarch, surpassing Queen Victoria’s 23,226 days. She plans to spend much of the day in the Borders, travelling from Edinburgh to Tweedbank near Galashiels on the new Borders Railway which I saw being constructed last year during a short break near there. It is the longest new line laid in the UK in over a century and many have made comparisons between this event with those which Queen Victoria attended during her reign. Apparently she is not going to make much of a fuss over becoming the longest serving monarch. Instead she wishes to spend time with her subjects celebrating achievements in the communities and among the people she loves and serves.

The Broadsheet February 2014 for the parishes of Humshaugh with Simonburn & Wark, and Chollerton with Birtley, Gunnerton & Thockrington The Revd. Canon Michael Thompson The Revd. Michael J Slade Rector, Humshaugh with Vicar, Chollerton with Birtley, Simonburn & Wark Gunnerton & Thockrington Tel: 01434 681304 Tel: 01434 681721 email: [email protected] email: [email protected] www.humshaughbenefice.org.uk www.chollerton-churches.org.uk HUMSHAUGH BENEFICE Humshaugh Vicarage Dear Readers, Bishops and the Parochial System In the coming months we look forward to two Bishops’ visits to this Benefice: firstly, Bishop Martin is coming to lead us in a service of Holy Communion, to be celebrated at St Peter’s Humshaugh at 10.30am on Sunday 23rd February. Later in the summer we look forward to Bishop Frank coming to hold a Deanery Confirmation at St Mungo’s Simonburn on the morning of Sunday 27th July. These two visits, for rather different purposes, will both be important occasions, each reminding us of the nature of the Church of England. The tradition of our Church, since Anglo Saxon times, has been to encourage a fairly independently spirited clergy to minister, in co-operation with local people, in distinct geographical areas. Over the years that system has shown both strengths and weaknesses, and the degree to which it has been successful is known only to God! Every ‘system’ involving human beings needs its ‘checks and balances’. At their worst, both clergy and parishioners can become remarkably insular in their outlook, and can come to overly treasure ‘their’ way of doing things. Our Bishops exercise their ministry to remind us that we are part of something bigger and more dynamic than a village club or a gathering of the like-minded.

  • Pennine Journey Development Plan
Pennine Journey Development Plan Pennine Journey Development Plan and Supporters Page 1 Background The Pennine Journey is a new long-distance footpath covering 247 miles and is based on “A Pennine Journey – The Story of a Long Walk in 1938” by Alfred Wainwright. In September 1938 he undertook a 210 mile walk from Settle to Hadrian’s Wall and wrote a narrative description of his walk in the months immediately following. This was shown to several colleagues in Blackburn Town Hall, where he then worked as a clerk, and put in a drawer for nearly a further 50 years. When he became more widely known through his pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells and other wrings as well as TV appearances he showed it to his then editor and, unaltered, in 1989 it was published. In 1998 David & Heather Pitt devised and walked a route, using maps and guide books of the area, which would take in as many of the places AW mentioned in his book as reasonably possible, using public rights of way and not the roads that he used in 1938 – a route that AW might have chosen if he was planning it today. Soon after the formation of the Wainwright Society in 2004 it was decided that the development of the route as a major long-distance footpath as a tribute to Alfred Wainwright would be an ideal, initial project for the Society. Members volunteered to walk and then test walk the 18 stages; Ron Scholes, a friend of Wainwright, offered to do detailed route maps; and Colin Bywater offered to provide black and white sketches.

  • The April Broadsheet 2018
The April Broadsheet 2018 for the parishes of Humshaugh with Simonburn & Wark, and Chollerton with Birtley Gunnerton & Thockrington Revd. Steve Wilkinson Rural Dean of Bellingham Parson of Humshaugh, Simonburn & Wark Tel: 01434 681304 email: [email protected] www.humshaughbenefice.org.uk Humshaugh Vicarage Friends, This last few weeks have been absorbed by the current proposals on changing education here in our valley and beyond, and I’m sure you’ll have seen the signs and posters up in Wark and Chollerton calling for people to help save our schools. Much of my time has been spent with politicians, local authority staff and the diocesan education team, and then going out to schools and speaking to parents, teachers and governors, to tell them how strongly the church supports keeping their school open. Out and about, talking to people as I walk through our villages or visit, the strength of feeling is incredible and the support in our communities for all our schools resolute. The Church of England has a huge stake in these proposals too, nationally the church runs about a quarter of first and primary schools, here in our villages all three are church ones, and under the current proposals the authority will close two of them. The wider implications of closing schools in small rural communities are well known and stark; families move out, doctor’s surgeries close, businesses, shops and post offices disappear and the pubs close. What is well understood, but being ignored here, is the disproportionate, wider social effect of closing just one, small rural school.
