CAPRI In the ’50s

Inspired by the ‘50s, a time when the mystical and lush isle of became the epitome of La Dolce Vita. The streets of 1950s and ‘60s Capri were filled with glitz and glamour, it was often the playground of some of the periods most iconic faces. Jackie Onassis, Grace Kelly, and Prince Ranier, to Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Rita Hayworth, Liz Taylor, Clark Gable, and Kirk Douglas all frequented the Capri scene. Because of this the island has always been synonymous with fashion: like Capri pants designed in 1948 by fashion icon Sonja de Lennart first worn by Grace Kelly or Florentine designer Emilio Pucci, who launched his haute couture salon on Capri in 1957 crediting the island and its myriad of colours and patterns as inspiration for his designs. 16 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

CASABLANCA

In the ’50s

To fall in love with Casablanca on a first sight is easy. It’s a city which has flourished in a haze of fantasy. With its mix of Parisian-type cafes that spill out into the street alongside the sacks of saffron and cumin to the Art Deco grandeur that is found everywhere. It’s as if the streets of sleeping buildings know full well how extraordinary they are. For many Casablanca’s romantic past inspires their first trip to Morocco. Of course Casablanca’s most famous claim to fame is the movie. “As big and timely a picture as ever you’ve seen! You can tell by the cast it’s important! Gripping! Big!” And it was, the romance of two beloved Hollywood stars: Humphrey Bogart the epitome of class – tough, cool and sophisticated and Ingrid Bergman famed for her saintly, natural beauty - both who remain international icons, perhaps even more celebrated and more respected today than in Their heyday. Over the past six decades Casablanca has grown to be legend and its lines of dialogue is quoted by people who have not even seen the film: “Here’s looking at you, kid.” Both a magical place and a masterful tale, Casablanca is an oasis in the desert. 26 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

CHICAGO In the ’50s

Where the philosophy of architecture was changed forever. Nowadays it’s difficult to imagine how the skyline of Chicago might look like without iconic minimalistic buildings by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The father of modernist ethic designed a collection of buildings to express their own individual character with extreme clarity and simplicity, including his masterpiece: Crown Hall; his contribution to the modern urban landscape cannot be overlooked. In fact Mies’ designs, beyond merely affecting our lives, fulfil them with greater significance and beauty. His philosophy radiates confidence, rationality, expresses elegance and simplicity in our lives. In our time, where there is no limit to excess, if we focus on the essential elements, we can find them beautiful. “Less is more”. 32 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

COPENHAGEN

In the ’70s

Inspired by simple and essential shapes, rooted from the early functionalism to the latest modernism. The ‘70s have been years of radical change. Copenhagen was the playground of important architects such as Friis & Molkte, Jørn Utzon and Jan Gehl. Just to name a few of the most influential names of the country which introduced their mild version of Brutalism, often featuring huge, robust building structures tucked into the landscape, raw concrete walls and visible technical installations. Together with a strong and influential architectural movement, Danish designers Finn Juhl, Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen, strongly influenced by the functional forms of the Bauhaus school in Germany, have lead the way in design, particularly in the fields of furniture and . This is why Copenhagen is the epitome of “Scandi cool”. 46 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

DALLAS In the ’80s

Rodeos and whiskey, lear jets and T-bone steaks. Fast cars, fast money, fast women. People worked hard as the hot sun scorched outside while the nights were filled with country-western, mechanical bulls, cowboy boots, long skirts, and daisy dukes. Opened in 1984 in a converted warehouse just north of downtown, the Starck Club was just a safe place where you could finally be yourself in the city. This marvelous place attracted oil-and- gas scions, southern socialites, gay and cross-dressing men, and boldface names like George W. Bush, Princess Stephanie of Monaco and Maureen Reagan. But Dallas was also the epitome of barbecues, beer, and football on Sundays; life was better than good, it was great back in the 80s’. “Strike oil and make it big in Dallas”, because everything was bigger in Texas. 52 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

HABANA In the ’50s

The 1956 issue of Cabaret Quarterly describes Habana as “a mistress of pleasure, the lush and opulent goddess of delights”. In the ‘50s Habana was an international city; it had a glamorous sensuality which seduced the jet set: Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Walt Disney and, most of all, Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway spent 22 years living in Habana and he was considered by locals as a “real Cuban”, calling him “Ernesto” or “Papa”. In turn, he donated his own Nobel Prize for literature to the Cuban people and made the Daiquiri one of the most famous drinks in the world. 60 years later, it is still impossible to visit Habana without falling in love with its wonderful mix of epicurean delights colours and untouched ‘50s appeal. 58 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

IVY LEAGUE

In the ’60s

Inspired by the most effortlessly cool-cat style of all: The Ivy League look, which started on the campuses (at the time) all-male American universities, such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton, quickly filtering down to become the dominant American male style of the ‘60s. Everyone from President Kennedy, Woody Allen, to John Coltrane and the ordinary working man, wore it. It’s Miles Davis in a green Oxford cloth button-down shirt; it’s Steve McQueen in a pair of brown-suede crepe- soled boots; it’s Paul Newman displaying Ivy style simply by virtue of his khaki trouser jacket combination. It’s these men, who elevated the Ivy look, known as Preppy nowadays, to the height of “confident carefree simplicity” a male dress code for a next generation. 64 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

LONDON In the ’60s

For a few years in the 1960s, London was the world capital of cool. The Swinging Sixties and its youth-driven cultural revolution that took place during the mid-to-late 1960s, emphasized modernity and fun- loving hedonism, with the Swinging city as its center. The excitement was high as the British Invasion of Rock and Roll took over the world. While Liverpool had the Beatles, the London sound was a mix of bands who went on to worldwide success, including The Who, The Kinks, The Small Faces and The Rolling Stones that swept the streets away. From a gloomy city to a shiny star, London was the city where Twiggy Lawson reached her unimaginable celebrity when Mary Quant decided to entrust the launch of the miniskirt to her image. The Swinging Sixties led to a flourishing of music, fashion, design and anything else that would banish the post-War gloom. 74 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

LOS ANGELES

In the ’70s

Come to Los Angeles! The sun shines bright, the beaches are wide and inviting, and the orange groves stretch as far as the eye can see. Los Angeles has long been known as a city of dreams, a tourist magnet and home of the entertainment industry. If Los Angeles in the ‘60s was a groovy, dynamic adventure, then the 1970s took it to a whole other level. Long before all the hipsters moved into the East LA neighbourhoods, making the area cool central, the original “King of Cool”, Steve McQueen, called this place home. McQueen seemed most at home sat astride a beautiful bike, riding down the infamous Mulholland Drive. This was a pastime he shared with fellow ‘70s icon Paul Newman “The most famous blue eyes in movie history”. Their effortlessly macho mannerisms and laconic style have been emulated by Hollywood’s male actors ever since, soaked in effortless cool, dangerous masculinity and edgy charisma that are coveted by men and embraced by women. 80 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

MIAMI In the ’80s

In the 1980s Miami was manly and rough, it wasn’t a place for everyone as the clash of culture was shaping the city crowd forever. Wide shirt collar stands and gaudy suits fitted smoothly with the bright and colourful characters in the bars of South Beach, the city was going through an “industrial revolution”. Business was booming and glamorous disco clubs were opening throughout the city generating a vibrant atmosphere made of lush parties and loud music. Everything was allowed and overlooked; this lifestyle was then perfectly depicted by the famous TV-series Miami Vice. Fashion icons started moving into the cultural capital of the orange state such as top fashion designer Gianni Versace who tragically lost his life in his beloved Miami. Today Miami is going through a new and exiting era where the sunny south beach rubs shoulder with the high-end restaurants of downtown Brickell and the hipster street art neighbourhood of Wynwood, now considered one of the top art destinations in the world. 86 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

MONACO In the ’60s

These were the years were elegance and charm were unmatched. Monaco in the ‘60s was the stage of unrepeatable love and grandeur. The French Riviera soul was inexorably flowing alongside actors, artists and worldwide famous entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, the Ye-ye Girls’ pop music ran rampant with stars like Francoise Hardy, Gall, and Gillian Hills who created hits like Zou Bisou Bisou with infectiously bubbly melodies winning hearts and captivate audiophiles. Monaco during the ‘60s saw the arrival of one of the greatest women of all time. At the end of the ‘50s, Grace Kelly was asked to join the United States Delegation Committee at the Cannes Festival in France. During this occasion - at a photoshoot - she met Prince Rainier III of Monaco, it was love at first sight and the two became inseparable. On April 19, 1956, the beautiful Grace Kelly became forever Grace of Monaco by marrying her Prince. She was undoubtedly the reason why Monaco became such an elegant and perfect place to be. 98 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

NEW YORK

In the ’80s

Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, and Basquiat. Wild party goers, avant-garde music producers, and artists were painting the town in red, often literally. From Brooklyn bound subways to Wall Street, the city was alive and flying high. The CBGB club soon became a famed venue of punk rock and new wave bands from the early 1980s. The Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, Talking Heads, And B-52s performed here. But New York in the ’80 was also men in briefcases driving around with their DeLoreans throughout Manhattan and eating late-night pizzas after long hour shifts at the stock exchange. The Big Apple was literally at the center of the world. Everyone wanted to join its vibrant mood. It was the greatest melting pot of art, music, fashion trends, and wild souls. 104 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

PARIS In the ’50s

Inspired by the “wind of change” of the Post- Liberation, when Paris was the European capital of the “exciting era”, a city packed with all the arts. Think the Rive Gauche and its intellectual “café society”, when Café de Flore in Saint-Germain-des-Près was the haunt of the post-war bohemians such as existentialist philosopher Jean- Paul Sartre, novelist Boris Vian or singer Juliette Gréco. Think about haute couture and some of the houses that are today one- word icons: Dior, Balenciaga and Givenchy. Think about Audrey Hepburn, starring in 9 movies in Paris, or the legendary dresses designed for her by Givenchy in the ‘50s and you will agree on her most famous quote: “Paris is always a good idea!” 110 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

PORTOFINO

In the ’50s

Inspired by The Mediterranean fishing village in the heart of the Italian Riviera, a favorite playground of the “glitterati” actors, writers, musicians, artists, athletes and aesthetes. Portofino has attracted those seeking to immerse themselves in exquisite charm and a relaxed lifestyle. First discovered by the actor Rex Harrison in the early Fifties, Portofino immediately lit up with the visits of high-wattage luminaries including Clark Gable, Ingrid Bergman and opera diva Maria Callas. Portofino’s ultimate beauty was portrayed in the classical favourite ‘50s “Love in Portofino” song, in fact many fell in love in this magical spot. Once a typical Ligurian fishing village it has morphed into a very exclusive yet discreet vacation escape destination. A kind of natural bowl which has become the world’s famous “Piazzetta”. The spot creates a serene atmosphere with a taste of bygone days and almost a film set quality and gives the guests the chance to see the Italian good life first hand. Though time moves on, only in Portofino it stands still, it is kind of suspended in another time, as if everything stopped in 1950 something. 124 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

The city was on the forefront of fashion, music and the counterculture movement free-loving hippie spirit prevailed, and bohemians, buskers, bongo-drum players and jewelry makers thronged the city. In 1972 Dave Allen’s The Boarding House, which hosted music and comedy, featured Bette Midler, Patti Smith, Dolly Parton, Steve Martin and Robin Williams. Outcasts and the socially marginalised were attracted by a greater tolerance and acceptance of diverse cultures in the city. This is why San Francisco grew as one of world’s biggest centres for the LGBT community and LGBT rights. It was the City of human rights and equality. The place where Indians of All Tribes group were occupying the former prison at Alcatraz Island and the LGBT community was at the centre of the debate. The place where Harvey Milk was shouting out to the whole world his beliefs. “Burst down those closet doors once and for all, and stand up and start to fight.” (Harvey Milk) 136 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

SHANGHAI

In the ’30s

Inspired by the City’s cosmopolitan history in the early 20th century, the years that wholeheartedly embraced Art Deco and Modernism in Shanghai, the time when the first American style skyscraper appeared on The Bund and the French savoire faire, it’s elegance and gentility reigning supreme in the French Concession. Shanghai was about to enter its most dynamic decade. The breathtaking ambiance of the city attracted the most influential and important members of elite. Beneath a million brilliant there were sidewalk cafes, boutiques with the latest styles, night clubs with singers from Paris, enticing customers with women dancing. Truly Shanghai as it was and as it stays, is a fascinating mix of East and West: the foreigners are back, the night life is back, the circle closes. The good life of old Frenchtown lives on. 142 ROSS & BROWN - SS20

STOCKHOLM

In the ’80s

Inspired by the music and fresh vibes of this magical City. “If you change your mind, I’m the first in line, honey I’m still free, take a chance on me”. How not to quote such a marvellous tune which made history. was the nest of disco music and we should all agree on the fact that The Abba were the pioneers. The City during the 80s’ gave birth to a special music movement which flowed happily all around Europe and gifted young people the chance to dance a new rhythm. It is fascinating on how many music groups were formed during this decade. Just to name a few together with the Abba, Stockholm saw the birth of Europe, Roxette, The Wannadies, Ace of Base and many others. TOKYO In the ’80s

Japan’s economical wave has brought the country to be the second largest power in the world. While created their own unique trends, they were at the same time voracious followers of Western fashion, influencing a new breed of young Japanese who were not afraid to break and challenge the traditional values and norms. As the Japanese began to consume Western brands, Nipponese designers were becoming prominent in the West, especially in Paris, creating the “Japanese fashion phenomenon”. Kenzo, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto shocked fashion professionals in the West by showing something none of them had seen before. The source of their design inspiration undoubtedly came from symbols of the “Land of the Rising Sun” culture, but their uniqueness lies in the ways they deconstructed existing rules of clothing and reconstructed their own interpretation. The widespread popularity of the ‘Japanese fashion’ in the 1980s was a decisive factor in placing Tokyo on the list of international fashion capitals. Today the Nipponic Capital embodies the true union between ancient and modern history of its charming country. 154 ROSS & BROWN - SS20
