They are mostly found on decay wood with some edible and medicinal species and others causing diseases of trees. In Cameroon, the knowledge on the phylogeny of polyporales is limited, their historical uses as food, medicine, source of income and the sociological impacts are apparently threatened due to slow ethnomycology research drive. The aim of this study was to identify and determine the phylogenetic relationship of polyporales in the Bafut forest and document its uses to the local communities. DNA was extracted using CTAB method and amplified using primers ITS 1 and ITS4. Their identities were determined in GeneBank using BLAST and a phylogenetic analysis was done using MEGA version 7.

Hopkins ii Abstract The wet sclerophyll forests in southern Tasmania are dominated by Eucalyptus obliqua and are managed on a notional silvicultural rotation length of 80 to 100 years. Over time, this will lead to a simplified stand structure with a truncated forest age and thus reduce the proportion of coarse woody debris (CWD), such as old living trees and large diameter logs, within the production forest landscape. Course woody debris is regarded as a critical habitat for biodiversity management in forest ecosystems. Fungi, as one of the most important wood decay agents, are key to understanding and managing biodiversity associated with decaying wood. In Australia, wood-inhabiting fungi are poorly known and the biodiversity associated with CWD has not been well studied. This thesis describes two studies that were undertaken to examine the importance of CWD as habitat for wood-inhabiting fungi in the wet sclerophyll forests of Tasmania.

The compiled list includes 142 fungal species, the major part of which are plant pathogens (125 species), while mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi (eight and nine species, respectively) are much less repre- sented. The distribution within country and current status of non-native fungi were assessed. Large part of alien fungus species (58) are considered as established, three species (Auricularia auricula-judae, Aureoboletus projec- tellus, Lecanosticta acicola) are currently spreading, three species (Serpula lacrymans, Synchytrium endobioticum, Tilletia caries) are decreasing, one (Laricifomes officinalis) is considered to be extinct, five saprotrophic species are ephemeromycetes with few records almost exceptionally indoors and not surviving in outside conditions.

Inevitably, the extensive action of many mycophiles collecting sporophores, mainly for culinary uses, can impact on this important source of biodiversity. In order to protect the rare taxa, also collecting their biological material for application purposes, conservation ex situ is suggested. Wood-inhabiting fungi were collected from Italian Alps, Apennines, wood plains and Mediterranean areas. Pure culture isolation was carried out from fruiting bodies in experimental sterile conditions. The culture collection has been registered at the Mycological Laboratory of Pavia University (Italy). In few years about 150 species were isolated and, among them, some rare and precious taxa such as Ganoderma pfeifferi Bres., Laricifomes officinalis (Batsch) Kotl. & Pouzar, Lenzites warnieri Durieu & Mont. and Perenniporia meridionalis Decock & Staplers deserve to be mentioned.
