Besides the overall theme of the conference, the sub-themes include; Decoloni- zation as a Philosophical Discourse, Decolonizing Education, Arts & Humanities, and Decolonizing Higher Education Leadership. All of Muslim community and nations in Asia have experienced direct and indi- rect impacts from colonization in various fields and this is still ongoing. Notable scholars of the world are still studying this phenomenon. In light of this, the 9th International Congress of the Asian Philosophical Association 2016 (ICAPA 2016), jointly organized by the Asian Philosophical Association (AsianPA), Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilisation, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (CASIS-UTM), High- er Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), and UNITAR International University (UNITAR), will discuss this important phenomenon in order to set forth particularly analyses and alternatives in the areas of education, humanities, and arts. The congress discussion will no doubt contribute positively in nation-building aspirations as well as the growth of civilization regionally and globally. This is the first time Malaysia hosted the prestigious congress; ICAPA 2015 was hosted by Turkey. Other nations that have hosted the regular congress include India, Mongolia, Japan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Korea. The Asian Philosophical Association (AsianPA) as an organization aims for the promotion of Asian studies in all disciplines over various cultures and the appreciation of the uniqueness in diversity; while ensuring the strength of unity among those who differ is protected. Syafiq BORHANNUDDIN1 Abstract This paper explores some key insights and lessons from Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz bin Ungku Abdul Hamid (born 1922 – present), a celebrated academician in Malaysia, on development. Drawing from Ungku Aziz’s main articles, papers and books, the paper attempts to make wider connections with regards to Ungku Aziz’s endeavour in development. This paper sheds new light and draw lessons on the meaning of ‘development’ and its implications to the Muslim community. The main finding indicated that Ungku Aziz had creatively interpreted ‘development’ geared towards the needs of the local community away from the Western-centric notion and ideals. It is not mere imitation of modern Western conception of ‘development’, nor is it a wholesale rejection of it, but it is a creative interpretation that takes into consideration the economic reality as well as the spiritual, social and cultural well being of the local community. This study also revealed that the Ungku Aziz’s conception of ‘development’ has significant relationship with the right theological and civilizational interpretation of the religion of Islam. This paper contends that Ungku Aziz’s conception of ‘development’ should be expanded further using the right religious and civilizational framework as part of the continuous civilizing process of the Muslim world. Today 61.000 residences equivalence is being heated geothermally (665 MWt, including residences, thermal facilities, 565.000 m2 greenhouse heating). Moreover, with the balneological utilisation of geothermal fluids in 195 spa’s (327 MWt), the geothermal direct use capacity is 992 MWt. ORME Geothermal Inc has completed the engineering designs of nearly 300.000 residences equivalence geothermal district heating system. 170 geothermal fields (Figure 1) have been explored in Turkey. There is a single flash power plant with 20,4 MWe installed capacity. A liquid CO2 and dry ice production factory is integrated to this power plant. A binary cycle geothermal power plant with an installation capacity of 25 MWe is going to be constructed at Aydin/Germencik. The proven geothermal heat capacity according to the existing geothermal wells and natural discharges is 3132 MWt [1]. 1. INTRODUCTION There are 11 city based geothermal district heating systems in Turkey. These geothermal district heating systems have been constructed since 1987 and many development has been achieved in technical and economical aspects. The rapid development of geothermal district heating systems in Turkey is mostly depending on; - construction of suitable geothermal district heating systems according to Turkey’s conditions, - participation of the consumers to the geothermal district heating investments by about 50 % without any direct financing refund, - geothermal heating is about % 50-70 cheaper than natural gas heating.

The subject is of course vast and embraces fields ranging from politics to sacred art, subjects whose debate often causes volcanic eruptions of emotions and passions and vituperations which hardly lead to an objective analysis of causes and a clear vision of the problems involved. Nor is this debate, which consumes so much of the energies of Muslims and students of Islam, helped by the lack of clear definition of the terms of the debate and an insight into the actual forces involved. The whole discussion is also paralyzed by a psychological sense of inferiority and a sense of enfeeblement before the modern world which prevents most modernized Muslims from making a critical appraisal of the situation and of stating the truth irrespective of the fact whether it is fashionable and acceptable to current opinion or not. Let us then begin by defining what we mean by modern thought. It is amazing how many hues and shades of meaning have been given to the term “modern” ranging from contemporary to simply “innovative,” “creative,” or in tune with the march of time. The question of principles and in fact the truth itself is hardly ever taken into consideration when modernism is discussed. One hardly ever asks whether this or that idea or form or institution conforms to some aspect of the truth.

    INTELLECTUAL DISCOURSE, 25:1 (2017) 247–272 Copyright © IIUM Press ISSN 0128-4878 (Print); ISSN 2289-5639 (Online) Traditional science and scientia sacra: Origin and dimensions of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s concept of science Asfa Widiyanto* Abstract: Seyyed Hossein Nasr, an Iranian philosopher and an exponent of traditional Islam, is considered one of the most important scholars of Islamic and religious studies in the world today. His conception of science is interesting in the sense that he strives to rejuvenate the notion of traditional science and scientia sacra (sacred knowledge), which lie at the heart of traditional civilization. He considers these two notions (traditional science and scientia sacra) as antithesis to modern science. Nasr’s elaboration of traditional science and scientia sacra serves as an alternative to discourses of Islamization of science which have been put forward by some scholars. This paper tries to examine the core ideas of Nasr’s construct of science, to highlight their ontological, epistemological, and axiological bases, and to trace the root of Nasr’s conception of science to living Islamic philosophical tradition. Abstrak: Seyyed Hossein Nasr merupakan seorang ahli falsafah Iran dan juga seorang pembela tradisional Islam. Konseptualisasi sains beliau adalah menarik dalam erti kata bahawa beliau berusaha sedayaupaya untuk mencerna dan meremajakan sains tradisi dan scientia sacra (ilmu yang suci) yang terletak di pusat tamadun tradisional.     From Freedom to Bondage: The Jamaican Maroons, 1655-1770 Jonathan Brooks, University of North Carolina Wilmington Andrew Clark, Faculty Mentor, UNCW Abstract: The Jamaican Maroons were not a small rebel community, instead they were a complex polity that operated as such from 1655-1770. They created a favorable trade balance with Jamaica and the British. They created a network of villages that supported the growth of their collective identity through borrowed culture from Africa and Europe and through created culture unique to Maroons. They were self-sufficient and practiced sustainable agricultural practices. The British recognized the Maroons as a threat to their possession of Jamaica and embarked on multiple campaigns against the Maroons, utilizing both external military force, in the form of Jamaican mercenaries, and internal force in the form of British and Jamaican military regiments. Through a systematic breakdown of the power structure of the Maroons, the British were able to subject them through treaty. By addressing the nature of Maroon society and growth of the Maroon state, their agency can be recognized as a dominating factor in Jamaican politics and development of the country. In 1509 the Spanish settled Jamaica and brought with them the institution of slavery. By 1655, when the British invaded the island, there were 558 slaves.1 During the battle most slaves were separated from their masters and fled to the mountains. Two major factions of Maroons established themselves on opposite ends of the island, the Windward and Leeward Maroons. These two groups formed the first independent polities from European colonial rule. The two groups formed independent from each other and with very different political structures but similar economic and social structures.
