(Summer-Autumn, 1983). © World Wisdom, Inc. www.studiesincomparativereligion.com Few subjects arouse more passion and debate among Muslims today than the encounter between Islam and modern thought. The subject is of course vast and embraces fields ranging from politics to sacred art, subjects whose debate often causes volcanic eruptions of emotions and passions and vituperations which hardly lead to an objective analysis of causes and a clear vision of the problems involved. Nor is this debate, which consumes so much of the energies of Muslims and students of Islam, helped by the lack of clear definition of the terms of the debate and an insight into the actual forces involved. The whole discussion is also paralyzed by a psychological sense of inferiority and a sense of enfeeblement before the modern world which prevents most modernized Muslims from making a critical appraisal of the situation and of stating the truth irrespective of the fact whether it is fashionable and acceptable to current opinion or not. Let us then begin by defining what we mean by modern thought. It is amazing how many hues and shades of meaning have been given to the term “modern” ranging from contemporary to simply “innovative,” “creative,” or in tune with the march of time. The question of principles and in fact the truth itself is hardly ever taken into consideration when modernism is discussed. One hardly ever asks whether this or that idea or form or institution conforms to some aspect of the truth. -

INTELLECTUAL DISCOURSE, 25:1 (2017) 247–272 Copyright © IIUM Press ISSN 0128-4878 (Print); ISSN 2289-5639 (Online) Traditional science and scientia sacra: Origin and dimensions of Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s concept of science Asfa Widiyanto* Abstract: Seyyed Hossein Nasr, an Iranian philosopher and an exponent of traditional Islam, is considered one of the most important scholars of Islamic and religious studies in the world today. His conception of science is interesting in the sense that he strives to rejuvenate the notion of traditional science and scientia sacra (sacred knowledge), which lie at the heart of traditional civilization. He considers these two notions (traditional science and scientia sacra) as antithesis to modern science. Nasr’s elaboration of traditional science and scientia sacra serves as an alternative to discourses of Islamization of science which have been put forward by some scholars. This paper tries to examine the core ideas of Nasr’s construct of science, to highlight their ontological, epistemological, and axiological bases, and to trace the root of Nasr’s conception of science to living Islamic philosophical tradition. Konseptualisasi sains beliau adalah menarik dalam erti kata bahawa beliau berusaha sedayaupaya untuk mencerna dan meremajakan sains tradisi dan scientia sacra (ilmu yang suci) yang terletak di pusat tamadun tradisional. Beliau mengambil kira dua tanggapan (sains tradisional dan scientia sacra) sebagai antitesis kepada sains moden. -

There are those who claim that the utilization of the findings of modern science in the interpretation of the Qur’an and adoption of the mechanistic view of the universe was a result of this influence. It is also held that this influence prepared the ground for the emergence of his grand work, the Risale-i Nur . Yet, so far there has been no comprehensive study on the relationship between this influence and the emergence of the Risale-i Nur as a new school of thought and spirituality or a new path representing “an alliance of reason and the heart” within the universe of Islam. The purpose of this study is the explication of the relationship between Nursi’s adoption of the premises of modern science in the context of Enlightenment thought and the emergence of the Risale-i Nur as a new school, which was expected by its author to serve as an alternative to the traditional Islamic schools of thought and spirituality. -

The idea of the unity of being developed by Ibn ʽArabī is an explanation about the existence of every entity which prevails in the universe. It means that nothing has essential substance except God. Therefore, all things that exist in the universe, including the diversity of religions and the pluralistic paths of faith, are rooted in God. The diversity of God‟s laws occurs only due to the diversity of the doctrines revealed to the different prophets and apostles. So, Ibn ʽArabī, who has the typical philosophical thought of Sufism manifested through wa╪dah al-wujūd, is considered as the supporter of the idea about the unity of religions emphasizing the inner aspect and the qualities of faith. QU™B AL-DIN AL-SHIRAZI'S (634/1236 – 710/1311) DURRAT AL-TAJ AND ITS SOURCES (STUDIES ON QU™B AL-DIN AL-SHIRAZI I) BY REZA POURJAVADY – SABINE SCHMIDTKE Qu†b al-Din al-Shirazi (634/1236 — 710/1311), one of the highly esteemed figures of the intellectual life of the Eastern lands of Islam dur- ing the late 7th/13th and early 8th/14th century1, authored two major works in the field of philosophy that soon became popular — a com- mentary on Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi’s (executed 587/1191) Îikmat al-ishraq, that is written in Arabic, dedicated to the vizier Jamal al-Din ¨Ali b. MuÌammad al-Dastjirdani and completed in 694/1295, and an independent work written in Persian, Durrat al-taj li-ghurrat al-dubaj that was completed between 693/1294 and 705/1306. ‘We Believe in Your Prophet’: Rumi, Palamas, and the Conversion of Anatolia Roderick Grierson Pamyati I. F. Meyendorfa A few weeks before a recent symposium organized by the Rumi Institute in Cyprus to commemorate the S‚eb-i Arus of 17 December, I received a telephone call from the chairman of the institute, Gökalp Kâmil. He was rather tired, he explained, because he had been watch - ing television until the early hours of the morning. The programme had consisted of a lengthy discussion between I˙lber Ortaylı, the director of Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi, and Halil I˙nalcık, who is generally recog nized as the most eminent Ottoman historian of the past cen tury, and perhaps of any century. During their conversation, Prof. I˙nalcık suggested that Gregory Palamas, the greatest of Hesychast mystics,1 owed a considerable debt to Sufism, notably to Ibn al-cArabi and Jalal al-Din Rumi. After all, Palamas had been captured in 1354 and spent a year as an Ottoman prisoner while he waited to be ransomed. 1 The term Hesychasm, from the Greek word hesychia, meaning ‘silence’, has been applied in at least four senses to Orthodox Christianity during the Byzantine period: a technique of prayer, especially involving bodily postures and the control of breathing; a type of mystical experience, especially involving a vision of divine light; a theology to explain and justify the mystical experience, especially involving a distinction between the essence and the energies of God; and a political faction reflecting the concerns of monks who saw the technique, experience, and theology described above as the essence of Orthodoxy, and who refused to abandon Orthodox tradition in order to secure military assistance from the Catholic West against Turkish incursions.
