The crop is now grown in countries not traditionally associated with its cultivation, although in such countries olive culture is not yet economically significant. Furthermore, climatic changes have resulted in the expansion of olive culture to areas more northerly than the Mediterranean countries. The olive is not only a significant food source but it also contributes to human health, with olive products representing an important part of the Mediterranean diet, which an increasing number of people all over the world are embracing for reasons of health. This book of ‘olives’ is the result of many years’ endeavours in collecting valuable information from the existing literature concerning the olive tree and its culture; a proportion of this information, and experience, has originated from scientific projects of the author and his scientific team. Topics include all aspects of olive culture, from its history, through traditional practices to modern techniques and horticultural procedures. Furthermore, this book covers the basic physiological and horticultural principles of olive culture in both theory and practice. My objective is to provide knowledge appropriate for students, scientists, both experienced and inexperienced horticulturists and, in general, for anyone wishing to obtain knowledge and experience of olive culture in order to increase productivity and improve product quality. The content is written in a style accessible to anyone and is also appropriate as a textbook at various levels of education. To enhance understanding the text includes illustrations, figures and tables featuring experimental data, and it is a recent addition to the literature on ‘olives’. Phytosociological data from 466 sample plots were ordinated using a Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DECORANA) and classified using Two–way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). The resulting classification was further refined with table–sorting procedures based on the Braun–Blanquet floristic–sociological approach of vegetation classification using MEGATAB. Weed problems can be largely avoided by careful landscape design, soil preparation before planting, and adequately scheduled irrigation and mulching. Weed control can be achieved through a combination of the following five control methods: PREVENTIVE: Preventive method is defined as keeping the weeds from entering or becoming established in the area. Monitoring the area for early detection of unwanted plants is crucial for the preventative methods to work. If a new weed is discovered, immediate actions need to be taken in order to prevent seed production and establishment. CULTURAL: Cultural method is defined as maintenance practices that will make it difficult for weeds to grow or become established, (i.e., select proper plants for the location, irrigation management, and pruning).

There is only one species of Heteromeles. The closely related Photinia is primarily tropical (Meyer 2008) and not in California. B. are currently recognized in the USDA PLANTS (2016) database. G. Other One of the most widely distributed California shrubs. Also widely planted and well-known for its bright red fruits in winter. McMinn (1939) noted it had been planted widely in parks and gardens since about 1914. From the Greek words 'heter' for different and 'malus' for apple (Munz 1974).
