Remember putting on my baseball uniform and listening to Louisville Colonels baseball games on the radio and acting out the entire game in my bedroom. Sliding was a challenge on my hardwood floor and no spikes were allowed! Sports are a big part of what we do at Henson Media. WSON-AM/FM and WMSK/ WUCO have long featured a variety of sports reports and play-by-play coverage. Then in 2017, we put ESPN 97.7 The REF (WREF) on the air with full-time sports coverage. The Walter Camp “Man of the Year” award honors an individual who has been closely associated with the game of football as a player, coach or close attendant to the game. He must have attained a measure of success and been a leader in his chosen profession. He must have contributed to the public service for the benefit of his community, country and his fellow man. He must have an impeccable reputation for integrity and must be dedicated to our American Heritage and the philosophy of Walter Camp. Golic joins a distinguished list of former “Man of the Year” winners, including Roger Staubach (Navy), Gale Sayers (Kansas), Dick Butkus (Illinois), John Elway (Stanford), Jerome Bettis (Notre Dame), and last year’s recipient Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech). “We are thrilled to have Mike Golic as our Man of the Year,” Foundation President Mike Madera said. “Not only has Mike had great success on the football field and in the broadcast booth, but he is a champion off the field as well.     Big 12 Conference Schools Raise Nine-Year NFL Draft Totals to 277 Alumni Through 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Apr. 26, 2003 DALLAS—Big 12 Conference teams had 10 of the first 62 selections in the 35th annual NFL “common” draft (67th overall) Saturday and added a total of 13 for the opening day. The first-day tallies in the 2003 NFL draft brought the number Big 12 standouts taken from 1995-03 to 277. Over 90 Big 12 alumni signed free agent contracts after the 2000-02 drafts, and three of the first 13 standouts (six total in the first round) in the 2003 draft were Kansas State CB Terence Newman (fifth draftee), Oklahoma State DE Kevin Williams (ninth) Texas A&M DT Ty Warren (13th). Last year three Big 12 standouts were selected in the top eight choices (four of the initial 21), and the 2000 draft included three alumni from this conference in the first 20. Colorado, Nebraska and Florida State paced all schools nationally in the 1995-97 era with 21 NFL draft choices apiece. Eleven Big 12 schools also had at least one youngster chosen in the eight-round draft during 1998. Over the last six (1998-03) NFL postings, there were 73 Big 12 Conference selections among the Top 100. There were 217 Big 12 schools’ grid representatives on 2002 NFL opening day rosters from all 12 members after 297 standouts from league members in ’02 entered NFL training camps—both all-time highs for the league. Nebraska (35 alumni) was third among all Division I-A schools in 2002 opening day roster men in the highest professional football configuration while Texas A&M (30) was among the Top Six in total NFL alumni last autumn.

    A Chronicle of the Philadelphia Section PGA and its Members by Peter C. Trenham 2000 to 2009 2000 Jack Connelly was elected president of the PGA of America and John DiMarco won the New Jersey Open 2001 Terry Hatch won the stroke play and the match play tournaments at the PGA winter activities in Port St. Lucie 2002 The Section hosted the PGA of America national meeting at the Wyndham Franklin Plaza Hotel in Philadelphia 2003 Jim Furyk won the U.S. Open, Greg Farrow won the N.J. Open, Tom Carter won 3 times on the Nationwide Tour 2004 Pete Oakley won the Senior British Open 2005 Will Reilly was the PGA of America’s “ Junior Golf Leader” and Rich Steinmetz was on the PGA Cup Team 2006 Jim Furyk played on his fifth straight Ryder Cup Team, won the Vardon Trophy and two PGA Tour events 2007 In October the Philadelphia PGA and the Variety Club broke ground on the Variety Club’s 3-hole golf course 2008 Tom Carpus won the PGA of America’s Horton Smith Award and Hugh Reilly received the President Plaque 2009 Mark Sheftic finished second in the PGA Professional National Championship and played on the PGA Cup Team 2000 Jim Furyk won the Doral Open on the Doral Golf Resort’s Blue Course in the first week of March. The course nicknamed the “ Blue Monster” had been toughened in 1996 by adding 27 bunkers, which most of the play- ers didn’t care for. In 1999 the course had been reworked to its original Dick Wilson design, but now most of the players thought the course was too easy.
