It begins with a comprehensive review of the most recent literature on incidental news exposure, personalisation, echo chambers and filter bubbles; combining this with analyses of key reports by industry and governmental sources. It proposes a new taxonomy of news consumption behaviours, and a new visual taxonomy of news using the RGB (red, green, blue) colour spectrum. Senior editors at ITV News, Channel 4 News, 5 News and Sky News were interviewed to provide insights into current digital strategies. -

ABSTRACT This thesis explores the ways in which the industrialist Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) used images of his manufactory and of himself to help develop what would now be considered a ‘brand’. The argument draws heavily on archival research into the commissioning process, authorship and reception of these depictions. Such information is rarely available when studying prints and allows consideration of these images in a new light but also contributes to a wider debate on British eighteenth-century print culture. The first chapter argues that Boulton used images to convey messages about the output of his businesses, to draw together a diverse range of products and associate them with one site. Chapter two explores the setting of the manufactory and the surrounding estate, outlining Boulton’s motivation for creating the parkland and considering the ways in which it was depicted. -

It is the demarca- tion point between microtechnology and nanotechnology. The semiconductor indus- try crossed it just after the second millennium had finished. In less than 50 years, it had come from transistors made in mils (one-thousandth of an inch or 25.4 mi- crons); to integrated circuits which were popularized as microchips; and then as the third millennium dawned, nanochips. At this writing, nanochips are the largest single sector of nanotechnology. This, in spite of many a nanotechnology expert’s predic- tion that semiconductors would be dispatched to the dustbin of science – where tubes and core memory lie long dead. Classical nanotechnologists should not feel any dis- grace, as pundits making bad predictions about the end of technology progression go back to the 1960s. Indeed, even Gordon Moore wondered as he wrote his clas- sic paper in 1965 if his observation would hold into the 1970s. -

Enron and Co. - the fiasco of the new USA-style economy Eric Toussaint (*) Twenty years of deregulation and market liberalization on a planetary scale have eliminated all the safety barriers that might have prevented the cascade effect of crises of the Enron type. All capitalist companies of the Triad and emerging markets have evolved, some with their own variations, on the same lines as in the USA. The planet's private banking and financial institutions (as well as insurance companies) are in a bad way, having adopted ever riskier practices. The big industrial groups have all undergone a high degree of financialization and they, too, are very vulnerable. The succession of scandals shows just how vacuous are the declarations of the US leaders and their admirers in the four corners of the globe (see Ahold, Parmalat,…). A mechanism equivalent to several time -bombs is under way on the scale of all the economies on the planet. To name just a few of those bombs: over indebtedness of companies and households, the derivatives market (which in the words of the billionaire Warren Buffet, are « financial weapons of mass destruction »), the bubble of property speculation (most explosive in the USA and the UK), the crisis of insurance companies and that of pension funds. It is time to defuse these bombs and think of another way of doing things, in the USA and elsewhere. Of course, it is not enough to defuse the bombs and dream of another possible world. We have to grapple with the roots of the problems by redistributing wealth on the basis of social justice. -
Long Delayed Echo: New Approach to the Problem

They are the most likely candidates for extraterrestrial communication, the so-called "paradox of Stormer" or "world echo". By LDE we mean a radio signal with a very long delay time and abnormally low energy loss. Unlike the well-known echoes of the delay in 1/7 seconds, the mechanism of which have long been resolved, the delay of radio signals in a second, ten seconds or even minutes is one of the most ancient and intriguing mysteries of physics of the ionosphere. Nowadays it is difficult to imagine that at the beginning of the century any registered echo signal was treated as extraterrestrial communication: “Notable changes occurred at a fixed time and the analogy among the changes and numbers was so clear, that I could not provide any plausible explanation. I'm familiar with natural electrical interference caused by the activity of the Sun, northern lights and telluric currents, but I was sure, as it is possible to be sure in anything, that the interference was not caused by any of common reason. Only after a while it came to me, that the observed interference may occur as the result of conscious activities. I'm overwhelmed by the the feeling, that I may be the first men to hear greetings transmitted from one planet to the other... Despite the signal being weak and unclear it made me certain that soon people, as one, will direct their eyes full of hope and affection towards the sky, overwhelmed by good news: People! We got the message from an unknown and distant planet. -

ABSTRACT The mechanical paintings of Matthew Boulton and Francis Eginton have been the subject of few scholarly publications since their invention in the 1770s. Such interest as there has been has focussed on the unknown process, and the lack of scientific material analysis has resulted in several confusing theories of production. This thesis’s use of the Archives of Soho, containing Boulton’s business papers, has cast light on the production and consumption of mechanical paintings, while collaboration with the British Museum, and their new scientific evidence, have both supported and challenged the archival evidence. This thesis seeks to prove various propositions about authenticity, the role of class and taste in the selection of artists and subjects for mechanical painting reproduction, and the role played by the reproductive process’s ingenuity in marketing the finished product. -
