Focus Areas of Statewide Ecological Significance: Kennebec Estuary Focus Areas of Statewide Ecological Significance Kennebec Estuary WHY IS THIS AREA SIGNIFICANT? The Kennebec Estuary Focus Area contains more than 20 percent of Maine’s tidal marshes, a significant percentage of Maine’s sandy beach and associated dune Biophysical Region habitats, and globally rare pitch pine • Central Maine Embayment woodland communities. More than two • Cacso Bay Coast dozen rare plant species inhabit the area’s diverse natural communities. Numerous imperiled species of animals have been documented in the Focus Area, and it contains some of the state’s best habitat for bald eagles. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONSERVATION » Work with willing landowners to permanently protect remaining undeveloped areas. » Encourage town planners to improve approaches to development that may impact Focus Area functions. » Educate recreational users about the ecological and economic benefits provided by the Focus Area. » Monitor invasive plants to detect problems early. » Find ways to mitigate past and future contamination of the watershed. The deeriNature Almanac What is the i in deeriNature? Is it information, internet? How about identification. When you go out on the Deer Isle preserves, what species are you almost certain to encounter? Which ones might you wish to identify? Then how do you organize your experience so that learning about the nearly overwhelming richness of nature becomes wonderfully satisfying? A century ago every farmer, medicine woman, and indeed any educated man or woman felt that they should have a solid knowledge of the plants around them. The Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury, Vermont has maintained a Flower Table with labeled specimens since 1905. The Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society has an antique herbarium collection made by Ada Southworth, a Dunham’s point rusticator. Today there are lovely field guides galore but the equivalent of a local list can come to you now by digital download. Here is an almanac, a list of likely plant and animal species (and something about rocks too) for our Deer Isle preserves, arranged according to season and habitat. Enjoy this free e-Book on your desktop, tablet or smartphone. Take this e-book with you on the trails and consult the Point of Interest signs. If you have a smartphone and adequate coverage, at some preserves a QR code will tell you more at the Points of Interest. After each category on the lists you will find suggestions for books to consult or acquire. You will have to read the on line reviews for apps as that field is developing too rapidly for any other approach. -

During her career at the department, Ms. DiCara award; (SLS 7) provided direction and leadership for state initiatives concerning The Family Violence Project, of Augusta, which is the the prevention of injury and suicide. She helped to establish recipient of the 2012 Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce Maine as a national leader in the effort to prevent youth suicide Community Service Award. The Family Violence Project provides and has been fundamental in uniting public and private entities to support and services for survivors of domestic violence in assist in this important work. Their son Steve Peterson If a boat could talk, there is one in town recalled many fun trips. “There were a lot with some stories to tell. Only nine feet long and fi ve feet wide, the Sea Star is a Turn- about sail boat built by Harold Turner of Gloucester, Mass. The original owners of the Sea Star were Hollywood movie stars Bette Davis and Gary Merrill, who bought the boat for their children and raised their family in Cape Elizabeth for close to a de- cade. The Turnabout boat became popular in the 50s as a junior training boat and many of them were built from kits by “do it yourself- ers” in garages or cellars. This class of sail- boats can be mainly found in the Northeast. Courtesy Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society In 1972, the Turnabout’s name was changed Hollywood stars Bette Davis and Gary to the “National 10” or N10 class. A new Merrill, who lived in Cape Elizabeth for mold was also designed at this time, with nearly a decade changes being made to resemble the original wooden design. -

Dickson Maine Geological Survey, Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry 1 Setting the Stage for a Course Change Maine Geological Survey Introduction Popham Beach in Phippsburg, Maine has changed dramatically in the last two decades. As regular visitors to the beach have observed, the beach and dunes are different from one year to the next. In 1990 the beach was backed by an enormous dune field and visitors walked long paths to reach the shoreline. Even in 2005 there were large dunes in the area of Center Beach (Figure 1). Maine Geological Survey, Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry 2 Setting the Stage for a Course Change Maine Geological Survey Introduction By 2010 the shoreline was hundreds of feet closer to the parking lot and encroaching on a new bath house. In addition, the last few years have seen hundreds of large pitch pine trees topple onto the beach as a result of erosion driven by the Morse River cutting a long and sinuous path in an easterly direction into the state park before turning south to reach the ocean.
