Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) Marvel Silver Age Hero Comic #9. The origin and first appearance of Spider-Man is, with all due respect to the Golden Age giants, the most in-demand comic book in the entire hobby. 1st appearance of J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker, Flash Thompson and The Chameleon. The most valuable comic in the world post-1942. Jack Kirby is the cover artist. A genuine milestone in the history of comics -- the origin and first appearance of mild-mannered Peter Parker and his alarming alter-ego, the spectacular Spider-Man. Having begun as Amazing Adventures #1 in 1961, the title changed to Amazing Adult Fantasy with issue #7, before a final name change for the series' swan song. The story goes that publisher Martin Goodman was so underwhelmed by Stan Lee's new arachnid creation that the only way the story could see print was as a throw-away feature in the final issue of a dying title. But Stan Lee's tale of a withdrawn high-school student suddenly endowed with strange powers hit a chord with readers, and the rest is history. Steve Ditko's moody art struck just the right tone for Lee's offbeat tale, and Jack Kirby's cover remains one of the most iconic images from the Silver Age of comics. The tragic death of Peter Parker's beloved Uncle Ben in this issue, at the hands of a felon Spidey could easily have arrested earlier, teaches the young hero the "with great power there must also come -- great responsibility." #1 most valuable 1st appearance silver age Marvel (1960-62) comic. ABSTRACT SHAEFFER, MATHEW TODD. With Great Power and Great Responsibility: The Representation of America's Social Anxieties and Historical Events in The Amazing Spider- Man, 1962-1979. (Under the direction of committee Dr. David Zonderman). This thesis examines The Amazing Spider-Man comic series as a means to explore historical events and social anxieties during the 1960s and 1970s. Recently, superheroes have reclaimed a prominent place in American culture as superhero films are surging in popularity. Using The Amazing Spider-Man, I hope to highlight how superhero comic books are a valuable source for American cultural history and warrant serious scholarly research. To conduct my research, I looked at the scholarship on superhero comics, which has expanded greatly over the last few years, and conducted a close examination of Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), which first introduces Spider-Man, and nearly 200 issues of The Amazing Spider-Man published from 1963 until 1979. I found that The Amazing Spider-Man comic series offers insight into American society and American values during the time period. I examine how The Amazing Spider-Man advocates the responsible use of science during the new Nuclear Age while also reflecting the dangers of new and unconstrained science. I study how the main character, Peter Parker, deals with social acceptance, general social anxieties, and finding his place in the world. I look at how the hero struggles with Cold War tensions, losing loved ones, seeing friends shipped off to war, social unrest, civil rights issues, student protests, political corruption, and much more. Finally, I look at how the perception of gender changes during the 1960s and 1970s by examining the evolution of both male and female gender values portrayed in the comic and how those values evolve over time.
  • Spider-Man's Peter Parker

    Spider-Man's Peter Parker

Spider-Man’s Peter Parker Introducing the Character Peter Parker, who transforms into the fantasy hero Spider-Man, is the creation of Marvel Comics writer and editor Stan Lee and artist and cowriter Steve Ditko. Peter Parker first appeared in the August 1962 issue of Amazing Fantasy #15. Since the character’s creation, Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man, has appeared as a cartoon character on television; in graphic novels; in newspaper comic strips; and most recently in a series of movies starring actor Tobey Maguire, including Spider-Man (Avad & Raimi, 2002), Spider-Man 2 (Avad & Raimi, 2004), and Spider-Man 3 (Avad & Raimi, 2007). Peter, an orphan being raised by his paternal uncle, Ben, along with his wife, May, was introduced to the comic strip world as an angst-ridden teen and high school student who, while facile in science and academics, was extremely shy, self-conscious, and uncomfortable with girls, particularly with Mary Jane Watson, his neighbor and love interest. Although early Spider-Man stories pitted the hero against fantasy ne’er-do-wells such as Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, and Venom, later story lines focused on more reality-based issues such as drug abuse and terrorism. Peter’s critical transformation into a super hero occurs during a high school field trip to a science museum. There, he is bitten by a radioactive spider, which transforms him into a web-casting, wall-climbing, lightning fast, super-strong, and sensorially acute alter-persona, soon after known to the comic book world as Spider-Man. Up to that point in comic book history, teenagers had been relegated to the secondary role of sidekick (such as Batman’s Robin and Captain America’s Bucky).
