    wether1 Page 1 Monday, June 26, 2000 11:52 AM PACIFIC STUDIES Vol. 21, No. 4 December 1998 THE ANGLICANS IN NEW GUINEA AND THE TORRES STRAIT ISLANDS David Wetherell Deakin University This study compares the Anglican diocese of Carpentaria in northeastern Aus- tralia with its Anglican neighbor the diocese of New Guinea. While New Guinea called for sacrifice on a heroic scale as befitted a mission among pure “pagans,” Carpentaria was intended primarily as a church for Europeans. However, the withdrawal of thousands of settlers from the Gulf of Carpentaria country from 1910 to 1942 in the wake of recurrent cyclones, economic depression, and drought led to wholesale white depopulation. This depopulation, added to the Anglicans’ acceptance of the London Missionary Society’s sphere in the Torres Strait Islands, left Carpentaria overwhelmingly Islander and Aboriginal in char- acter. Papua New Guinea headed for independence in state and church from the 1960s, but Carpentaria remained largely a missionary diocese, part of whose populations it managed for half a century on threadbare mission stations, with the empty-handed encouragement of the Queensland government. “Those damned churchmen are like the Papists,” remarked M. H. More- ton to a fellow British New Guinea magistrate, “plenty of them willing to be martyrs.”1 The New Guinea Anglican Mission, established by Albert Maclaren and Copland King in 1891, was regarded by its supporters during its “golden age” from the postwar period to 1960 as one of the glories of the Anglican Communion. Its bishop, Philip Strong, was accorded an honored place at Lambeth conferences; its workers, seemingly unbowed by physical deprivation, were acclaimed for upholding the highest ideals of self-sacrifice.

    Anglican Diocese of Grafton Prayer Diary 2018 A LETTER FROM THE BISHOP Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, This 2018 edition of our Diocesan Prayer Diary once again gathers the prayer requests of all our ministry units and agencies, enabling us to focus our prayers through the year, upholding each other and lovingly supporting each other. Although we are scattered along the coastal strip of northern NSW, from Tweed Heads south to Port Macquarie, we are held together by our love of God, our commitment to each other and to the Gospel, and by the prayer we offer for each other day by day, week by week, throughout the year. As we pray, so we offer a gift of love to those for whom we are praying. The very act of prayer also deepens our own relationship with God. I encourage you to pray for the people, parishes, schools and agencies of the Diocese, and particularly for the Discernment Synod and Bishop’s Appointment process. Included in this edition of Partners Praying Together are the prayer points that we have received.     VISION FOR THE PILLARS Commissioning New Art for Churches 2012 Competition Submission of The Minster Church of St Andrew, Plymouth Vision for the Pillars PREFACE - CATCHING THE VISION Do you wish to set out on the adventure of commissioning new art? (Commissioning New Art for Churches, page3) When we responded to the invitation to compete for the Jerusalem Prize we had little idea how exciting an adventure it was to be: from deciding what was going to be our project to completing this stage of the competition, we have discovered so much, met so many interesting people and engaged in processes completely new to us. It has been a roller coaster of a learning experience – and in no small part the Guide has done what its producers aimed to do; stimulated and encouraged us in “a process that has been both enjoyable and rewarding”. From simply considering a sculpture on two pillars at the entrance to a newly acquired space in front of the church, we have come to realise the significance of the space itself as an interface between our bustling City Centre and the church building. From rather modest expectations of a work in metal, in the light of our research on public art, both in our own City and further afield, we have raised our sights expecting that what we achieve will be an iconic work of art, in a material determined by the commissioned artist, to compare in importance with the John Piper windows, which enhance our church in its post-war restoration. We are confident that when we make known our brief, interest will not be limited to local artists.

The Rod bears four silver plates, three inscribed with the City’s Arms and the names of three previous holders of the office, namely: “Albert Edward Prince of Wales, Lord High Steward 1874” “George Frederick Ernest Albert Prince of Wales, Lord High Steward 1902” “Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David Prince of Wales, Lord High Steward 1919” The fourth plate bears the inscription: “H.R.H. Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh, Lord High Steward 1960”. “The Rod bears traces of burning. It was recovered from the ruins of the former civic centre after the raids on Plymouth in World War II. (Dr Karin Sowada 19/10/2009) 3/09 Administrative burden on parishes Synod receives the report on the Administrative Burden on Parishes and – (a) encourages parishes, in the context of personal relationships within the diocesan network, to seek opportunities to provide administrative support to one another, (b) requests the Standing Committee to consider facilitating such partnerships of support by compiling and disseminating information about parishes which may be willing to provide support and parishes which are seeking support, and (c) requests that all submissions to government include, where appropriate, recommendations to reduce the administrative burden on parishes and diocesan organisations. (Mr Geoff Kyngdon 19/10/2009) 4/09 Clarification and revision of rules relating to Alterations, Ornaments and Monuments Synod requests the Standing Committee to clarify and bring revisions to section 5.5 paragraph (a) of the Parish Administration Ordinance 2008 relating to Alterations, Ornaments and Monuments to the next session of Synod. Specifically, Synod requests that those things requiring the Archbishop’s approval in order to be added or taken away be defined more precisely and narrowly, enabling parishes to clear away clutter, free up storage space, and adapt their buildings for ministry efficiently, and without confusion or unnecessary procedural delays.
