    Towards Effective Enforcement Mechanism of Trademark Rights Infringement in Nigeria Abounu Peter Onyilo Abstract One of the vital ways in which the development of the Nigerian economy can be achieved is through the instrumentality of trademark as a component of intellectual property (IP). There are comprehensive legislations for the protection of trademark but that cannot be true of effective enforcement mechanism of trademark in the event of infringement in Nigeria. Therefore, this work is aimed at examining the enforcement of trademark rights infringement in Nigeria. The key objective of the study was to ascertain the extent to which the available enforcement mechanisms have dissuaded the infringement of trademark rights in Nigeria. This paper adopted doctrinal research methodology approach. The main sources of information and data collection for this study were the relevant statutes, case laws, textbooks, articles and the internet. The article found that trademark infringement has caused unprecedented economic haemorrhage, underdeveloped potentials, hindered capacity for job creation and poverty in Nigeria as the available trademark enforcement mechanisms appear not to have adequately deterred trademark infringers. The work recommended inter alia, for legislative intervention, strong judicial system and inter-agency synergy to curb the trademark infringement menace in Nigeria. Giving as a percentage of income is 2.9% ranking Salisbury 36th out of 41 dioceses. This means of course, that there is huge potential for development and growth. Over the last year, we have invested time and resource to really understand the lay of the land around giving and generosity in the Diocese. From this we are developing a Diocesan Giving Vision and a plan that operationalises Renewing Hope in this area – the new Giving Advisor will be key to shaping this further and bringing it to life. As part of the ongoing review and development of the Diocesan Giving Vision we have convened an Inspiring Giving working group which functions as a sub-committee of the Diocesan Board of Finance.

Answers to Questions 4.1 Distribution of funds raised by Anglicare in the Syrian and Iraqi Refugee appeal The Rev David Clarke asked the following question – How much of the $746,000 raised by Anglicare in the Syrian and Iraqi Refugee appeal has so far been distributed to parishes currently engaged in ministering to Syrian and Iraqi people? To which the President replied – In September 2015, I called upon the Sydney Diocese to come together to mount a prayerful, practical, sustained and effective response to assist refugees coming to Australia fleeing the Syrian conflict. As the lead organisation for this response, Anglicare launched the Archbishop’s Syrian Refugee Appeal and designed a program that addressed current gaps in service delivery, and which would involve wherever possible the involvement of parishes and individual Sydney Anglicans. Between September 2015 and May 2016, the appeal raised $746,000, enough to fully fund the program until July 2018. Parishes do not receive direct funding through this program, however resources are directed toward parish-based programs. The program involves – Parish-based English as a Second Language (ESL) classes; Community and parish-based Early Learning Through Play courses to prepare pre-school aged refugee children for kindergarten; Family support and trauma counselling through Anglicare’s Hope Counselling program; Training for parish volunteers in assisting refugees; and Assistance with material needs and transitional accommodation.

National symbols are objects, entities and relics representing an idea, concept, character that may be physical, abstract, religious, cultural, and linguistic among others in a sovereign context and beyond. Symbols or objects that connected together may not have anything in common in reality but by association and common agreement, they have come to represent each other in social contexts; a symbol may arbitrarily denote a referent, icon and index. In the case of Nigeria, the National flag, Anthem, Pledge, Currency, language, Coat of arms, National institutions like the National Assembly complex, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), images of past leaders, historical monuments like the Unknown Soldier (representing military men who died in the cause of protecting the nation), dresses are some of these national symbols. Apart from commemorative historical functions, national symbols are also used to represent hard work, credibility or truthfulness, as well as ethnic differentiation, religious affiliation, cultural background, social status, professional orientation, class distinction among others. Theorizing with Gate-keeping and Framing Analysis, this study adopts a content analysis design which is the study of recorded human communications, an objective and systematic analysis of the contents of any document that are manifest.
