GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

Organ Preludes — Vater unser im Himmelreich J S Bach (1685 -1750) Nettleton Paul Manz (1919 -2009)

At 10 am the church bell will ring and as we prepare for worship the cantor will sing:

Today I awake and God is before me. At night, as I dreamt, God summoned the day; For God never sleeps but patterns the morning with slithers of gold or glory in grey.

Today I arise and Christ is beside me. He walked through the dark to scatter new light. Yes, Christ is alive, and beckons his people to hope and to heal, restore and invite.

I H

1. Hail the day that sees him rise Alleluya! Glorious to his native skies; Alleluya! Christ, awhile to mortals given, Alleluya! Enters now the highest heaven! Alleluya!

2. There the glorious triumph waits; Alleluya! Lift your head, eternal gates! Alleluya! Christ hath vanquished death and sin; Alleluya! Take the King of Glory in! Alleluya!

3. See! the heaven its Lord receives, Alleluya! Yet he loves the earth he leaves: Alleluya! Though returning to his throne, Alleluya! Still he calls mankind his own. Alleluya!

4. See! he lifts his hands above; Alleluya! See! he shows the prints of love: Alleluya! Hark! his gracious lips bestow Alleluya! Blessings on his Church below. Alleluya!

5. Still for us he intercedes; Alleluya! His prevailing death he pleads; Alleluya! Near himself prepares our place, Alleluya! Harbinger of human race. Alleluya!

 In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Christ is risen. Alleluia, Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia, Alleluia!

P R

The celebrant introduces the service and invites the people to confess their sins:

My brothers and sisters, as we wait for the Lord to speak to us through his Word and feed us with the gift of himself in the Holy Communion, let us call to mind our sins.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

3

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

May almighty God have mercy on us,  forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen

Grant we pray, almighty God, that as we believe your only begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens, so we in heart in mind may also ascend and with him continually dwell; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen

Lambs will be gathered by the shepherds and led to the vestry for their own Ministry of the Word.

MINISTRY OF THE WORD A R L P E 1: 15 -23 Read by Alice de Jonge

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my pray- ers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the im- measurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

For the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Mark  Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

16: 15 -20

Jesus said to the disciples, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptised will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recov- er.” So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord

worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied it.

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Fr Chris

After the sermon there is a short time for reflection.

P F

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,  and the life of the world to come. Amen

P P Led by Mary Harris All respond at the end of each petition

Lord in your mercy Hear our prayer.

After the last petition, all say together:

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

T P

Jesus said “Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give to you. If you love me, rejoice because I am going to the Father.” Alleluia. 7

The peace of the risen Lord be always with you. And also with you.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

O H

During the singing of the hymn, the altar is prepared for Holy Communion.

As the hymn is sung, there will be a collection, and you may wish to make a monetary offering to the Glory of God. Offerings go towards sustaining the Church and its charitable activities, both locally and overseas.

1. All hail the power of Jesu’s name; 4. Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, Let angels prostrate fall; Ye ransomed of the fall, Bring forth the royal diadem Hail him who saves you by his grace, And crown him! crown him! crown him! And crown him! crown him! crown him! Crown him Lord of all. Crown him Lord of all.

2. Crown him, ye morning stars of light, 5. Hail him, ye heirs of David’s line, Who fixed this floating ball; Whom David Lord did call; Now hail the Strength of Israel’s might, The God incarnate, Man divine, And crown him! crown him! crown him! And crown him! crown him! crown him! Crown him Lord of all. Crown him Lord of all.

3. Crown him, ye martyrs of your God, 6. Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget Who from his altar call; The wormwood and the gall, Praise him whose way of pain ye trod, Go spread your trophies at his feet, And crown him! crown him! crown him! And crown him! crown him! crown him! Crown him Lord of all. Crown him Lord of all.

7. Let every tribe and every tongue To him their hearts enthrall, Lift high the universal song, And crown him! crown him! crown him! Crown him Lord of all.

T G T

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right and good, Our duty and out joy, Always and everywhere to give you thanks, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God, Through Jesus Christ the King of glory.

Born of Mary, He came to the rescue of our human race.

Dying for us, he trampled death and conquered sin. By the glory of his resurrection 8

He opened the way to eternal life And by his ascension gave us the sure hope that where he is we may also be.

Therefore the universe resounds with Easter joy And with choirs of angels we sing for ever to your praise:

All may kneel or sit.

The celebrant continues the prayer which now recalls the Last Supper and the invitation from Jesus to remember his death and resurrection in the gift of Holy Communion.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,

The sanctuary bell is rung.

we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 

The sanctuary bell and the church bell are rung.

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 

The sanctuary bell and the church bell are rung.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: 9

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

 Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

The celebrant sings:

Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, gracious Father, for ever and ever.

T L’ P

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The celebrant breaks the Host in silence

Behold the Lamb of God Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Those who are making a spiritual communion should pray the following prayer:

At your feet O Jesus I prostrate myself before you with an unworthy yet contrite heart, humbled, yet longing to be in your eucharistic presence. I love the gift of yourself offered to me in this great and Blessed Sacrament. Though unable to receive this food for my journey, I desire all the graces that this encounter with you can bring, and offer my heart afresh as a place where you might dwell. While I wait for the day when I shall again have the joy of sacramental communion, I trust in your desire to abide in me, and wish to possess you in spirit. Come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for you. Amen

As the congregation comes forward to receive the holy sacrament or a blessing, the cantor sings:

Faithful Shepherd, feed me in the pastures green; Faithful Shepherd, lead me where thy steps are seen.

Hold me fast, and guide me in the narrow way; So, with thee beside me, I shall never stray.

Hallow every pleasure, every gift and pain; Be thyself my treasure, though none else I gain.

Day by day prepare me as thou seest best, Then let angels bear me to thy promised rest. T B Pollock 1836-96 NEH 282

Once you have received communion or made your spiritual communion, spend some time in re- flection. You might find it helpful to use the following prayer in thanksgiving:

Grant O Lord that in thy wounds I may find my safety, in thy stripes my cure, in thy pain my peace, in thy cross my victory, in thy resurrection my triumph, in thy ascen- sion my destiny: a crown of righteousness in the glories of thy eternal kingdom.

If we call upon the Holy Spirit, we must be ready for the glorious pain of being caught up by his power of our petty orbit into the eternal purposes of God …

B L is in Perth this weekend as keynote speaker at a conference of the leaders of Anglican schools. He returns tomorrow. Thank you to Fr Chris Mostert who is presiding and preaching this morning.

T @ 5 the next episode of T C will be shown in the vicarage followed by reflection together and a glass of wine with some cheese. All welcome.

N S P S — one of the great Feast Days of the Church when we give thanks for the gift of the Holy Spirit. At the 10.00 am mass there will be the opportunity to express our unity in our diversity as the Lord’s Prayer is offered in a number of languages. On the Day of Pentecost people from many nations were gathered together in Jerusalem and they heard the same gospel in their own tongue. We will be united in the prayer Jesus taught his disciples in our different languages. There will be a shared lunch in the vicarage after refreshments in the Bardin Centre. Come along and bring something to eat, and all the better if our ‘table’ has an international flavour.

W P C U T A B C P S … will be held at 5.00 pm next Sunday at the Brunswick Baptist Church, 491 Sydney Road — opposite the Blyth Street intersection. The theme: Abide in my love and you will bear much fruit. John 15: 5 A light supper will follow the service to which all are welcome.
