Moz Fact Sheet F A C T S H E E T T H E M O Z A M B I Q U E A F R I C A H U B O V E R V I E W Mozambique is blessed by geography: 2750km of unspoilt glittering Indian Ocean coastline to be precise - where azure seas, powder white sands and remote, pristine islands. With phenomenal safari offerings just a short hop away, Mozambique is the perfect beach partner. It offers an enticing counterbalance to the drama of safari, with the promise of languid days watching sunlight dance on water. Don’t be fooled, however, into thinking this is purely a country for self-indulgence and indolence (though you can experience those there in great style) – for the marine world offers plenty of excitements. Water-based activities - deep sea fishing, exceptional snorkelling around coral reefs and diving, to name but a few - as well as incredible wildlife experiences - dugong, whales and dolphins - all await. Moreover, for those seeking cultural flavour, the towns have impressive Portuguese colonial-era architecture and are steeped in a vibrant local culture. Mozambique is a compelling offering for those seeking a quintessential, Indian Ocean idyll and it is a destination which knows how to do ‘beach bliss’ exceptionally well. With regular flights from South Africa and now improved road access, Vilanculos is fast becoming a popular destination with tourists and travellers alike. The town itself is only about 5km long, filled with all the amenities needed to make your visit comfortable yet local. The airport is based on the outside of the town with flights arriving and departing on a daily basis. The Bazaruto Archipelago, a chain of islands strung out like a pearl necklace, is a protected National Marine Reserve (declared so in 1971) that lies parallel to the historical Mozambican channel. The archipelago consists of five islands: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Banque and Santa Carolina (also known as Paradise Island). I L H A D A M O Z A M B I Q U E Ilha da Mozambique is a 2 hour drive from Nampula Airport in Northern Mozambique and is a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site. Prior to 1898, it was the capital of Portuguese East Africa and the name of the country, Mozambique, is derived from the name of the island. Ilha de Mozambique was one of many Portuguese trading settlements and ports that were created along a stretch of south-east African coastline, which soon came to be called “Portuguese East Africa,” which now forms Mozambique. With its rich history and sandy beaches, Ilha de Mozambique is one Mozambique’s most beguiling tourism destinations. Escape from stress to a place where simplicity still reigns and you can get lost in the stunning natural beauty, peaceful and friendly life still echoed by the adventurers of the past. M A P U T O With easy access from Kruger (between 4hrs-4hrs30 depending on how busy the Komatipoort/Lebombo border post happens to be), Maputo is in fact a vibrant, fast-paced city, depicting a different side to Africa given its Portuguese colonial history. With its Mediterranean-style architecture, waterside setting and wide avenues lined with jacaranda and flame trees, Maputo is easily one of Africa's most attractive capitals. It's also the most developed city in Mozambique, with a wide selection of hotels and restaurants, well-stocked supermarkets, shady sidewalk cafes and a lively cultural scene. Due to the convergence of two rivers, Maputo’s sea is more of a muddy brown than glistening blue like many other areas of Mozambique therefore it can’t be sold as a beach destination. I N H A M B A N E & T O F O Inhambane is 291 miles from Maputo and is one of Mozambique’s most charming towns. The architecture and atmosphere reflect a diverse and exciting past that reaches back at least a millennium, making it one of the oldest settlements along the coast. Muslim and Persian traders visited here as did Vasco da Gama in the late 1500s. The port of Inhambane also later became a major centre for ivory and slave trade as well as whaling. Inhambane is known for its Manta Rays and Whale Sharks with the best time to view them between October and January. Inhambane is the gateway to a fine collection of beaches including Tofo and Barra. Tofo Beach is sometimes described as "the next Goa". With its sheltered azure waters, white sands, easy access and fine diving, the beach at Tofo has long been legendary on the Southern Africa holiday circuit. The stunning beach runs in a long arc, at the centre of which is a small town with a constant party atmosphere. P E M B A & Q U I R I M B A S A R C H I P E L A G O Pemba is the gateway to the beautiful string of 32 idyllic islands that make up the Quirimbas Archipelago in Northern Mozambique. As well as a plethora of marine life and being one of the world’s top diving destinations, the island also have enormous cultural and historical value. The islands are a melting-pot of Portuguese, Arabian and African influences, while historic landmarks such as the old fort on Ibo Island tell tales of slavery, pirates and the ominous ivory trade. At the moment sadly this area is currently closed to tourists due to an Islamist rebellion in the area. G A M E R E S E R V E S There are game reserves in Mozambique but they are currently being rebuilt and restocked and have limited accommodation options. Tor the time being, the prime attraction remains the 'beach' element, and particularly the immaculate beach lodges on the islands off the Mozambique coast. W W W . T H E A F R I C A H U B . C O . GENERAL OVERVIEW Mozambique was colonized by Portugal for nearly 500 years before gaining independence in 1975. The new country faced a devastating civil war and fiscal difficulties upon independence, and was unable to develop a secure government or economy until the 1990s. Free and fair elections, as well as economic reform, improved overall stability. However, high-level corruption in the Mozambican government appears to have increased in recent years. Mozambique faces many additional challenges today, including a struggling economy, extremely limited infrastructure, and high levels of crime and disease. Mozambique is located in southeastern Africa, and borders Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the Indian Ocean. The climate is generally tropical, though some variation exists depending on location. Mozambique's capital, Maputo, is located in the south. Virtually all of the Mozambican population is ethnically African and divided into smaller tribal groups. The official language is Portuguese, though Emakhuwa is most widely spoken. English is also spoken in tourist areas. The population is religiously diverse, with some 50 percent practicing Christianity of some form.

  • Fact Finding Airports Southern Africa
2015 FACT FINDING SOUTHERN AFRICA Advancing your Aerospace and Airport Business FACT FINDING SOUTHERN AFRICA SUMMARY GENERAL Africa is home to seven of the world’s top 10 growing economies in 2015. According to UN estimates, the region’s GDP is expected to grow 30 percent in the next five years. And in the next 35 years, the continent will account for more than half of the world’s population growth. It is obvious that the potential in Africa is substantial. However, African economies are still to unlock their potential. The aviation sector in Africa faces restrictive air traffic regimes preventing the continent from using major economic benefits. Aviation is vital for the progress in Africa. It provides 6,9 million jobs and US$ 80 million in GDP with huge potential to increase. Many African governments have therefore, made infrastructure developments in general and airport related investments in particular as one of their priorities to facilitate future growth for their respective country and continent as a whole. Investment is underway across a number of African airports, as the region works to provide the necessary infrastructure to support the continent’s growth ambitions. South Africa is home to most of the airports handling 1+ million passengers in Southern Africa. According to international data 4 out of 8 of those airports are within South African Territory. • A Land of Contrasts
Mozambique A Land of Contrasts When Portuguese explorers reached Mozambique in 1498, Arab-trading settlements had existed along the coast and outlying islands for several centuries. From about 1500, Portuguese trading posts and forts became regular ports of call on the new route to the east. Later, traders and prospectors invaded the interior regions seeking gold and slaves. Although both Portuguese and Arabic influences have gradually diminished, there still remains a rich tapestry of these cultures within the region today. Take a long walk on a far-flung sandbar at sunset, enjoy mouth-watering fresh seafood, swim in the warm tropical ocean, all whilst spotting dolphins and the rare dugong. Mozambique is a truly breath-taking mosaic of culture and tropical beaches. PASSPORT & VISA REQUIREMENTS Please note that you will need two blank pages in your passport for immigration. Your passport must be valid for six months after your departure date from Mozambique. All nationalities, except South African passport holders, require a Visa to enter Mozambique. Citizens from countries that require a Visa to enter Mozambique will be able to get these on arrival at 44 border posts in Mozambique, including Maputo International Airport and the Port of Maputo, as well as border posts such as Ressano Garcia, Ponto D’ouro, Giriyondo, Vilanculos Airport, Inhambane Airport, Beira Airport, Pemba Airport and Nampula Airport, among others. The Mozambican government has doubled the cost of entry Visas with immediate effect. All single entry Visas applied for in foreign travellers’ countries of origin will be affected by the fee increase. The cost of a single entry Visa, valid for 30 days, has increased from US $50 to US $102.

  • Coral Directions
Directions Transfers to Coral Lodge can be arranged from either Nampula or Lumbo Airports Airlines flying into Nampula: SA Airlink (from O.R. Tambo InternationalAirport – Johannesburg), Kenya Airways (from Nairobi), Mozambique Airlines and LAM (from various airports within Mozambique). Lumbo airport mainly serves charter flights. Transfer from Nampula Airport to Coral Lodge 15.41 Transfer by 4x4 vehicle is a drive of 180 kms through rural countryside. The last 40-50 km are along a bumpy sand road with the last 10 km or so on very sandy tracks and through mangrove swamp water at high tide. This transfer takes 2 ½ to 3 hours but may be longer during the rainy season depending on road conditions. Transfer by mini-van along a good, scenic tar road to Ilha de Mozambique where guests board a dhow. Transfer time is tide dependant and takes approx. 20-30 minutes at high tide and up to 45 minutes at low tide. At high tide the dhow drops the guests off at the lagoon entrance right next to the lodge’s swimming pool. At low tide the dhow stops in shallow, warm water 50-100m from the lodge which means guests have to wade to the beach. Total transfer time is approx. 3 ½ hours depending on the tide. Guests arriving on the SA Airlink flight from OR Tambo, land on time at approximately 13h30. If there are no issues with visas or customs, guests should be on Ilha de Moçambique before 16h30. The last dhow leaves Ilha de Moçambique at 17h00 for Coral Lodge. For return transfers the reverse happens and guests generally leave the lodge by 08h00/08h30 depending on the tide, to arrive at the airport in Nampula by 11h30 which is 2 ½ hours before the 14h00 SA Airlink departure.
